Shooter (I) (2007)
10/10
Amazing
24 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I came into this film with loads of skepticism, but I came out feeling completely the opposite. Shooter takes you into the life of retired Marine Scout Sniper Bob Lee Swagger, who retired after a mission went completely wrong. He is called back to give information as to how someone would be able to kill the president from over a mile away. He ends up being framed for the attempted murder of the president, and the murder of an archbishop of Ethopia, and must prove his innocence, at any cost.

Mark Wahlberg does a perfect job of portraying a detached veteran who has no respect for the government, and really brings the character to you. He is backed up by an outstanding Michael Pena and Danny Glover who add to the film like no one else could. The only real complaint is that Kate Mara's character, the widowed wife of Swagger's best friend seems to only play two emotions, distressed, or hysterical, and it does get annoying, though she plays the part well. Elias Kosteas did a good job playing Jack Payne, a borderline psychotic government agent, though at times his part seems over the top.

All in all this film blew me away and I couldn't have loved it more. Anyone who is into action movies of any kind definitely needs to see this movie.

Dog Soldiers (2002)

Truly a Great Movie.
21 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
On quite a few occasions I have caught bits and pieces of Dog Soldiers on the SciFi network thinking the movie had some potential, but not seeing enough of it, I could never say that I liked or disliked the movie.

While browsing Blockbuster I came across the DVD of the movie, and remembered the bits and pieces that I had seen and figured that I might as well give the rest of the movie a chance. Well, did I hit the jackpot.

The overall plot of the movie is that a small squad of British Soldiers are on a training exercise in the forests of Scotland. They find a special ops squad campsite completely torn up and bloody, with one survivor. They are stalked through the forest by werewolves and are found by a woman who takes them to a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. In a nutshell, the have to stay there for safety, but need to find a way out.

The special effects(if you want to call them that) are for the most part on the cheesy side, as I couldn't see any sort of CG work. While not too realistic, the effects didn't hurt the movie much, if at all.

The acting was phenomenal, each soldier had their own personality and most definitely showed it. The dialogue is one of the shining aspects of Dog Soldiers. The conversations between the soldiers, however meaningless the are and how ever little they have to do with the actual plot, are made to seem important, and can be quite a comedic break at times when it is getting a bit intense.

Dog Soldiers is a movie that any horror fan can enjoy. Easily one of my favorites of the genre.

The Crow (1994)
10/10
Powerful
15 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This movie has always been a favorite of mine. I quote it more than any other movie, I watch it more than any other movie. I guess you could call it my favorite movie.

The story focuses around Eric Draven, a rock star who was murdered along with his wife-to-be, Shelly, the day before his Halloween wedding. He comes back a year later to seek vengeance on those who put him and his wife through the pain they had to endure. Each of the men who murdered him are slowly stalked by Draven and The Crow that brought him back to life, who is his only link to the realm of the living.

Brandon Lee gives an unforgettable performance as Eric Draven. He is convincing in his role, and you really forget that he is just an actor pretending to be this character. It really feels as if Eric Draven is a real person seeking vengeance. Rochelle Davis is another example of bringing a character to life. Her portrayal of Sarah is amazing. She really shows how to make a character come to life. You really can connect with Sarah as she feels alone in the world without Eric and Shelly.

This is easily one of my favorite, if not number one on my list of favorite movies. I can recommend this movie to any movie lover without hesitation.

Norton Shows his worth once again.
15 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
After seeing Fight Club I knew that Edward Norton was something special, but after seeing this movie, I can say with utmost certainty that he is one of the greatest actors of American Cinema.

Norton plays a former skinhead who is released from prison after serving 3 years for murder. He finds that his Brother(Edward Furlong) is heading down the same path that put him in jail. A lot of the story is told through flashbacks, which are in black and white. At first the black and white was a turnoff to me, but it grew on me and added to the way the story was told.

Edward Furlong also does a stand-up role as Norton's younger brother. His voice narrates the movie from the point of view of a paper that he has to right for a special history class that he has to take because he is not working well in his class(Writing a paper on Mein Kampf will do that to you).

This is one of the true movies in American Cinema that everyone should be required to see. It brings out a lot of truths in the Nazi movement in America and shows the horrors that it can bring. Edward Norton and Edward Furlong truly tell a story that is worth telling.

Appleseed (2004)
10/10
Nearly Flawless
15 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This movie, scratch that, this masterpiece is quite possibly the best movie(of any kind) that I have ever seen. It has all the elements that makes a movie great. Compelling characters, intricate plot, action(oh lord does it have action) and by far the most stunning visuals I have ever seen in any movie. Ever.

The plot is complex, but in a nutshell, after the third world war, the war is a wasteland. There is one giant Utopia, Olympus, that rises from the ashes to save mankind. The city is half Bioroids, a type of clone. The Bioroids are there to keep the balance between the humans. There are people who hate the Bioroids and what they do, and plan for there eradication. Its much more complicated than that, but if I went on, I would essentially have to type the script. I will say though, the plot is nothing too original, and can be cliché at times, but it is still enjoyable.

The soundtrack is amazing as well. There is a song that will fit every mood in the movie. During the action sequences I found myself bobbing my head to the beat of the song in the background.

Appleseed is a movie that no one should miss. If you are a fan of any sort of sci-fi movie of any kind, hell, even if you are a movie fan in general, you should put this movie high on your must see list.

Fun
12 October 2006
I was looking through the video store a while back and my friend came across this little title, and just started laughing. The title alone is enough to make someone just ask "What the hell?" But, for the fun of it, I rented it and sat down to what ended up to be a very fun movie. The special effects(if you want to call them that) are god awful, but that is half the fun of the movie. Watching the Squid wrestle with humans, and other creatures as well is downright absurd, but as messed up as it is, it is a fun movie that really has no point other than to make viewer say "What the hell?" If you want to see a movie that is zany but tries its hardest to be serious at the same time, see this movie.

Silent Hill (2006)
9/10
Easily the best Video game adaptation(but that really isn't saying much)
12 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Silent Hill is one of those movies that you will either love or hate. I personally loved it, though being somewhat of a fan of the games really doesn't hurt.

The story is told quite well throughout the movie, though at points it can get a bit confusing and you have to make a lot of inferences. Most of it is straight forward and can be easily understood. It focuses around a woman who takes her daughter, Sharon to Silent Hill, as she goes into outbursts and screams that name over and over. She loses Sharon in the town and learns about the towns horrible secrets and how her daughter is connected to them all.

The special effects are very well done, especially when the "darkness" comes over the town and the walls are peeling and all the wonderful little creatures come out to play.

This is easily the best video game to movie adaptation made so far, but then again, when a movie is in the same category as Super Mario Bros. The Movie, it really isn't saying much.

The Departed (2006)
10/10
Wow
11 October 2006
The Departed is one of those movies that leaves so many points in the movie as a logical closure point but then punches you in the face and says "NO! I AM NOT DONE YET!" I am not trying to give the idea that it is long and drawn out just for times sake, because it is not. Each of what seems to be a logical closure point sets up for something that just adds to the experience that Scorsese is trying to fabricate. And it works, good Lord does it work. Scorsese creates an experience that hooks the viewer into a world that is so intricate and well thought out, that everything else during those 2 1/2 hours in that person's life are secondary. Thank you Martin Scorsese, thank you.
