Of All the Badly Acted...
17 October 2023
I love trashy TV, and I'm very tolerant of bad acting and fake drama. But this dirty bag takes the cake. It's badly acted, poorly scripted, and just overall cheap. It's hard to say which character is the worst as there is so much competition. Perhaps the fairest thing, is to give it to the entire cast. From the plastic surgery Ken Doll, to the weirdly off-putting Justin Bierber, and the dog psychic; they are all completely awful in their own way.

However don't forget special mention of the horribly saccharine sound track, which veers from the awful to the foul. Let me just say, yuck!!!!!!!!!!!

Stepford Wives Do Design
24 October 2020
This is the show for you if you are looking to see cookie cutter design done for and by people that all look strangely alike. Do the share the same hairdresser? Do they all shop at the same place? Are the all related?

Brings Shame
14 August 2020
This movie has pretty much nothing to do with the original. The only reason they are linked is to try to get bums on seats.

So many plot holes, so boring. Avoid.

Dreary Worthiness
14 July 2020
As many have mentioned, this film is marked by crazy casting with people of colour having Anglo children, and in fact making up around twenty percent of people in Dickensian England. This is never explained or remarked upon on the film.

Aside from this, the film is overly long and dreadfully boring.

Monster movie
15 May 2004
I was really looking forward to this movie as something would be representative of Gays in the 1980's. Instead what I got was a movie about Gay people that is homophobic! That's right a movie about Gay people where no affection is shown between boyfriends or anyone at all except a heterosexual relationship. The Alig character and the "love of his life" go to kiss and the screen goes black! Get real. It is 2004 and we have Philadelphia all over again when Tom Hanks gives his long term boyfriend a hug in the whole movie. Also what is with those stupid accents!

A fine film
12 April 2004
Les Invasions Barbares is a fine film. It is superbly acted, directed and edited as well as very well written and the characters are 3 dimensional and believable. I understand there is a movie that documents the separation or divorce of Remy and his wife but this film certainly stands alone. I was troubled by the representations of the Canadian or Quebec health care system and the alleged corruption of the union movement. I have to say I very skeptical of a film that preferences the disaster that is the laiser-faire system of health care system in th US. Unless Canada is a lot more different than Australia than I had previously thought I also find the instances of public officials taking bribes pretty unbelievable. As to the debate of is this a Canadian film or a Quebecois one I don't really know enough about the political of the situation.

Great, movie but I don't really get.
3 April 2004
Warning: Spoilers
*SPOILERS* This is a very beautiful movie which I guess is a strange thing to say about a film that is about a shooting massacre in a High School. But it really is beautifully filmed. The use of hand held cameras and POV shoots is interesting and involving. The way the film is sort of "washed out" in regards to its use of colour is also good. Unlike a lot of people in the discussion boards and reviews I had not no problem with the acting. For non-professionals I thought they did a good job. However Gus Van Sant but has done the casting himself and he certainly has an eye for good looking youth. It is amazing how many schools in TV and Cinema are filled with models. I did not really really get the lack of motivation the killers seemed to have or the end or when the guy shot his co-killer got but I guess thats the point really. As for the people describing the pair as gay murderers that is so not the point.

Great movie, great acting.
27 March 2004
The story of Aileen Wournes is an horrific one. Brutilised and abused from the time she was born she never really had a chance - Beaten by her father by reporting sexual abuse at the hands of a family friend. A prostitute from age 13. This doese not excuse the murders she committed (Except, possibly, the first one which was clearly self defense). What is does do is inspire compassion for her and the disasters of life choices she made, or were really made for by a sexist and classist society. The film is a also very clear about the enormous problems of American society. The lack of a genuine social welfare system helped to create her and the situation whereby she felt sex work and robbery were her only choices. A brilliant movie.

I was captured
25 March 2004
This is a very good documentary. I've the postings on the various message boards about it and am a little suprised that so many people have a concrete view as the innocence or guilt of Arnold and Jessie. The main thing I was left with was a sense of doubt - I doubt they did all the things they were convicted of and I doubt they were totally innocent.

The interviews with the police, prosecutors and victims clearly show major flaws in the way evidence was gathered and presented whilst Arnold's stash of child porn and Jessie's statement when he is on his way to the court house for sentencing that nothing happened "only that one person, and they did not complain anyway" is telling. The best thing about this doco is the way that is suspenseful like a good piece of fiction and all the more horrible because it is true (No matter what the guilt or innocence of Arnold and Jessie).

Love maybe a bitch but this movie is not
24 March 2004
We saw this film after seeing 21 grams and thinking it was an amazing movie and were interested in seeing the directors earlier work. I can see the similarities between the two, both having a motor vehicle accident as a plot linking device, and I have to say it is really difficult to say which is better. They are both great but I think I would vote for the this one as it is even more hard edged than 21 grams. Maybe because it is Mexican and not American it was a little more convincing. The scenes involving the dog fights are a bit gross but the cuteness of the guy who plays Octavio is a bonus. My one major criticism would be the thing with the dog trapped under the floor goes on a little too long, I get it was a symbol of their 'lost' relationship but enough already.

Awful and not good awful
20 March 2004
This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I don't object to the violence or the gore or anything like it. I object to the stupid barely there plot the bad acting and stupid storyline. The people in the cinema seemed to agree with me with at least 20 people walking out and lots of laughter at supposedly scary or gory bits. It is usually possible to find something that a movie has going for it but this one leaves me completely blank as to any positives. A truly bad movie.

Life as a boring, conservative and sickly sweet movie
19 March 2004
I thought this movie was pretty terrible really. Firstly the Son's acting sticks just as badly as it did in AOTC and the teenage neighbour was so unbelievable as a character it was ridiculous. As well did it really take just a couple of conversations for the Son to stop using drugs? They should lend Kevin Kline out to drug treatment centres. I was also very releived when the kid took out his piercings, as we all know there is no worse social problem than teenagers with piercings. The storyline about the kids flirtation with prostution was also unbelievable but I was, of course, very relieved he turned out to be heterosexual because there is nothing worse than Gay teenagers. (Sarcasm) Did the kid really have to give away the house? I think the point of the "wonderful" transformation had already been hammered home by that point.

What is all the fuss about?
14 March 2004
I thought this movie was OK. From all the hype maybe I was expecting too much. I thought the ideas of the film were interesting but more could have been done with them. I don't really get the stuff that people are going on about on the discussion boards about the film making out that Communism being evil or something. To me it seemed like the text was nostalgic for the era of the GDR and, I think rightly, showed some areas of society that were better organised in the GDR than they are in the West. Back to the film itself, I thought there were some pretty good laughs but the good idea of re-creating the GDR was not really worked through. It also did not feel like he had that much of a connection with his mother that he would do that for her. The guy who played "Denis" was very cute though!

Feel good if you're straight
4 March 2004
Firstly let me say this is a good movie. There are some great actors like Laura Linney, Andrew Lincoln and Alan Rickman who put in good performances. I don't know how believable Hugh Grant is as the Prime Minister but I can deal with it. Although if I am going to start faulting the movie on points of realism I would never stop. What is dissapointing though is that out of the 9 couples there isn't a Gay or Lesibian couple or, heaven forbid, both! It is 2004 after all. Still a good movie though.

OK I guess
29 February 2004
This movie was ok but it could have done with some more story to go with musical numbers. It was entertaining and funny, in parts, but it was difficult to feel much for the characters as they were not really developed into anything and we did not know why they were the way they were. It was also a bit of a cop out that the only romance in this Gay themed movie was a heterosexual one. The performances of the cast were fine and it will be interesting to see if any stars crack it into the wider movie scene. I thought the Stephen Sondheim cameo was fairly pointless.

Important and amazing movie
23 February 2004
I saw this film at the cinema in 1987 and have to so that even now it is one of the best films ever made. It was very important to me whilst I was coming out also. The view it presents of Thatchers Britain divided along lines of class, ethnicity and sexuality is an inditement of her to this day.

I did'nt hate it.
22 February 2004
This movie was ok, I guess. It was very sentimental and really a little overblown. The story was OK but it felt like Tim Burton was just being self-indulgent seeing what images he could create like the field full of daffodils. A major gripe concerns the movie's re-writting of history in regards to race relations in Alabama and the US. I so sure there were black doctors delivering babies for white women in the south in the 1930's!

Disturbing film
16 February 2004
This film based on one of Oprah's book club selections is rather disturbing. The story of a battle for ownership of a San Francisco home depicts charactors that all seem fairly unlikable but one is still drawn into their world. The viewer keeps looking to take sides in the battle but both sides behave badly. The preformances of Kingsley and Connelly are superb. A must see.

Amazing movie
14 February 2004
This is an amazing film which may seem a little confusing at first due to its non-linear narrative structure but is completely worth sticking with.

The preformances are great with Sean Penn being just as good as in Mystic River. All the cast are great though. The film looks great as well being shot with hand-held cameras and its use of washed out colours.

Great but too long
14 February 2004
I thought this was a very good movie. Very well filmed and acted with amazing sets and scenery. My only complaint was that it went on too long. It should have finished at Mount Doom the rest of the scenes were not necessary.

The 80's was the 70's
9 February 2004
Tjis could have been an interesting movie about the life of a famous porn star. You know, his motivations, family life etc. I guess it was sort of but my focussing on the one incident in his life it becomes just another murder story that could be about anyone. The fashions and lifestyles scream 70's even though the film is set in 1981.
