Dâkusaido burûsu (1994)
This is probably not an anime at all
Being a huge fan of an anime and always desperate to watch as much of it as possible, I must say that this one was lame. I didn't like animation, didn't like the plot and didn't like the characters either.
The plot is a one enormous hole: you can figure that something is definitely happening, but you cannot say what and for what reason. The characters are one-dimensional and have absolutely no development along the movie. The initial conflict is somewhat interesting and even intriguing (a huge corporation controlling 90 percent of the Earth and a bunch of free-thinking teenagers opposed to it - plus some mysterious Darkside planning some 'renewal'), but it leads to nowhere: the protagonists talk a lot, but in the end you get none explanation.
So, I was left utterly confused and therefore irritated. They could at least have made some cool blues soundtrack (for which you could hope having read the title), but in fact the soundtrack was colourless and boring as well.
I don't think that this one deserves to be called an anime. A really frustrating disappointment. If you want to watch something really exciting about some Utopian city and its dwellers made in an anime style, go for Necropolis.
Huo Yuan Jia (2006)
Magnificent
I watched this movie about two or three weeks ago and must admit that the impression is still very vivid. This one (together with The Hero, which is a stunning piece of art as well) is a powerful and deep story with excellent performances and great fighting sequences. This is not another ordinary slasher / action flick set in the decorations of some alien and therefore strange culture. This movie has a very strong spiritual and philosophical basis accessible for any person, who is able to think and feel. Jet Li once again demonstrates his genuine artistic talent and his unique ability to express the inner, very deeply hidden emotions by means of reversed but very precise acting. The supporting roles are also a feast, while the camera work provides an eye candy of the highest quality. The directing is very strong and inspired. All in all, this is a great story both for those who are interested in the Oriental culture and for those who enjoy technically impeccable martial arts sequences. A must see!
The Cave (2005)
Hollywood sucks at its best - once again
If it wasn't for the recent masterpiece called The Descent, I'd think that the genre of claustrophobic underground set horror films has died and is never going to resurrect again. Frankly, The Cave makes you think so 10 minutes into the film - spiking the 9-inch nails into the lid of its coffin with each new shot.
What have we got here? A team of 'look at me and kneel - i am so freaking handsome' scientists. Well, OK, I can swallow this after seeing a bunch of crappy movies involving handsome adepts of science played by supermodels who's mission is to be shagged by producers and the likes for a year or two until they get old without getting any smarter. Then, the dialogs written by some kindergarten graduate. Then, some crazy, insane, pathetically absurd, confusing and annoying camera moving so rapidly and randomly during the action sequences that it makes you think that the cameraman had problems with his stomach having eaten 5 kilos of some hallucinogenic mushrooms from Tibet. Why was it done this way? It kills the remains of the atmosphere, which is definitely could be there: the still shots of the cavern's interior show some potential. But the director had definitely put it this way: 'Guys, we will make the most irritating and clichéd movie of the decade!' Well, he succeeded.
Because the movie itself is not scary. It has some chilling moments here and there, but in total its dull. It can probably frighten your religious granny, but it has nothing to offer to those who has some experience of watching real brilliant horror films. Those in the industry, please understand: even PG-13 horror movies can be scary as hell, but making of such a movie requires talent and a sincere desire to do a good job. In our case, we have neither.
All in all, I give it a 2 out of 10. And it's only because of my compliment to a pair of nice resilient breasts set against a creepy cavern's background, mind that.
