Knives Out (2019)
Vintage Christie, great ensemble cast
I love mysteries and The Dame is one of my favorites. Plenty of intrigue, suspense, red herrings and the denouement at the end is classic.
Only thing that detracts from an otherwise excellent tale is Daniel Craig - does not work for me here. He has worked too hard to play the Southern Sleuth, it comes across as unreal.
The plot is a bit predictable too, but interesting nevertheless.
Spend the time, quite a good return for value.
Romeo Akbar Walter (2019)
Tense Thriller based on True Facts
It is rare these days to find a movie or show coming out of India that is based on truth and yet is thrilling to watch. In this new age of profanity, gratuitous violence and fake narratives, this makes a refreshing change.
The continuity is slightly patchy but the pace keeps up, there are many moments of suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
I love stories that have a twist at the end that leaves you with a lot of food for thought, that prompts a discussion among those who watch it with you. R.A.W. provides you with plenty of that.
A must watch. Tom Clancy would have been proud.
1917 (2019)
Uniquely photographed, gripping drama
Slow, but builds up, the cinematography is mind-blowing, being just two long shots. Gorgeous backgrounds and the horrors of the trench warfare are brought home in stunning reality.
Worth watching.
Extraction (2020)
Less Action, more story needed
If you like your movies to be nothing but one long car chase and no story then yes, this will do it for you. But a bit more intrigue, and well developed characters would have done a great service to this movie. I am also getting tired of the cliche'd white man to the rescue movies. Hemsworth, Hooda and Jaiswal do a great job holding it all together. The Bengali dialogue is down and dirty but authentic I am told.
Yeah, if nothing else works on a slow evening.
The Gentlemen (2019)
Heady ride on a roller coaster
Truly feels like this, in classic Guy Ritchie style, from the opening scene to the end. You need to watch and listen carefully, pause it for popcorn or whatever, but every scene is meaningful.
Thoroughly enjoyable.
Batla House (2019)
Would have been even better with an improved cast
John Abraham is awesome in this as with many of his recent titles. However, the movie is marred by very sloppy acting by most of the cast, including the woman who plays his wife. The judge in the court is terrible!
An amazing thriller nevertheless and worth watching. A bit slow to take off but nail-biting. It is incredible what corrupt politicians will do.
