Nicholas and Alexandra (1971)
This is a seriously underrated film!!
I sat down one quiet and slow Sunday and came across this movie. I was quickly completely glued to my seat and enjoyed every minute of this film. I knew the basics of what I was taught in school about The Romanov's so I knew how this would end, it didn't matter, I was still gripped to the story to the very last frame. I don't understand how this film did not have a bigger audience when it was released but I guess when Movies like The Godfather and Midnight Cowboy were being released people weren't lining up for historical biographies. It doesn't have the sex and violence that we're dominating movies at the time but this movie has extraordinary acting, sweeping sets and above all a very true and important story, the consequences of the events in this story are still being felt to this day, not only in Russia but worldwide. Immediately after watching this film I read and watched everything I could get my hands on about The Romanov family and I'm still loving finding new things. This movie is definitely worth a few viewings and should be requiredviewingfor any history buff. Please understand that at the time it was made the director did not have all of the correct information due to the Soviet Union not sharing certain documents etc, even so it's worth a look through the eyes of what we now know. Bravo to everyone involved in this film!!
On a side note I also think Janet Suzman was robbed of an Oscar, she gave a once in a lifetime performance here.
Frank and Ava (2020)
Wow!! This is ATROCIOUS!!
I have never felt the need to write a review before but after seeing this travesty I instantly made an account and now here we are. I have been an Ava Gardner fan since I was a teen. Why couldn't this movie get an actress that looked like her even a little?? Why couldn't they get an actress that didn't make her look like a bumbling floozy?? Ava was a very smart and talented woman with a near genius IQ. Then there's the insane amount of historical inaccuracies. If you're a Sinatra fan you won't be happy with this either (Check out the HBO movie The Rat Pack for a great Sinatra portrayal). HORRIBLY casted, Horribly acted piece of melodramatic garbage. I truly hope a great actress and director come along and make an Ava Gardner biopic that is true to the amazing woman that she truly was some day.
