The Leftovers (2014)
Best Writing in Television
I have watched a lot of TV-shows. Most of them good; Some of them great.
This show stabs me right and dead-center in the human condition. This is not a show about the sudden "sci-fi" loss of 2% of the world's population. This is a show about personal loss. The people _YOU_ have lost and "What comes after".
How would I, as a human being, handle that kind of sudden loss? How would everyone else handle that kind of loss? What would society turn into with a massive population of grieving individuals, just like you and me? How do we move on?
Soulful realism and humanity permeate every episode. The acting is, at times, kind of expletive. It is always saved by the underlying themes. If you are looking for a show akin to the movie "The Mist", save the other-dimensional monsters, this is a slow-burning, hard-hitting and gut-wrenching feel-fest.
Snow Falls (2023)
Absolute garbage
If you have ever wanted to watch moist garbage freeze in the winter snow you are certainly in luck.
The acting is some of the worst I have ever seen, along with the writing and directing. The characters spend an an inordinate amount of time in-doors, contemplating amateur survival skills from a character that has never spent a minute out in the wilderness, and whose sole knowledge-base of the wilderness is based off of first aid videos and vintage survival tips viewed on Youtube.
All of the actors are no-name, which is not necessarily a bad thing except for the fact that they all failed acting class.
Enjoy your C-class horror movie that will leave you with no satisfaction at all.
Speak No Evil (2022)
Frustratingly idiotic
This film has the single most idiotic ending I have ever witnessed.
The first half of the film slowly builds up to some delicious, suspenseful horror. The pacing, the minor tells and eventual major reveals are all there. Just as you think the protagonists are ready to stand their ground... The writers decide to drive the story into a literal ditch.
As original as the ending is, it is also incredibly unrealistic and cheap. As a viewer I felt cheated and massively disappointed by the inflated, stereotypically Scandinavian conflict averse personas of the main characters. No adjusted person, in real life, would ever act in the way that the main characters did in the film's final sequences, effectively ruining the narrative that came before it.
If you want a face-palm inducing film, look no further. If you want an intelligent horror film with a gratifying ending; Look elsewhere.
