Political Allegory wrapped in a drama disguised in a mystery
I can understand why some people's reviews of this mini series are not good. If you expected a traditional BBC mystery series, this is different. It certainly starts like the typical, say, Marcela or DCI Banks, but as the story unfolds it becomes something else - a drama about emigrants and national identity, social and gender roles and expectations, loyalty and betrayal. At moments the story is slow, and one might wonder, where is this going, but the ending makes it worthwhile. Everything comes full circle, and the tragic character in the middle of the plot is heartbreaking.
Now yes, it's not realistic that all these characters would cross paths, but as an allegory of contemporary British society it makes perfect sense. It's a worthwhile watch, just don't expect the traditional BBC mystery series.
As for the comments of some people how David Hare's politics are embedded in this allegory, yes, so...? An author's politics are usually visible in their work, especially when the subject is so sensitive in this time we live in. That doesn't diminish the work - or are you saying that, for example, Oliver Twist or Les Miserables should be dismissed as politically biased social realism?
