Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006)
Some perfume!
I'm assuming that as there was no man on man action in the orgy scene (but plenty of woman on woman), the scent in question can't have been that great! Or maybe it was just homophobic producers...yet again.
Homophobia aside, the film was quite good up until the orgy scene...then it really lost credibility. It could have ended with the execution accompanied by any number of poetic sentiments. Anything would have been better than what ensued.
I haven't read the book, so I don't know how faithful this film is to the original story...but whether or not it is, it doesn't work for me.
Disappointing.
Thirteen (2003)
Seen it all before
Haven't we all seen these issues dealt with before? I certainly have - many times - and this film doesn't bring anything new to the subject. Totally unoriginal. It's always a pleasure to watch Holly Hunter perform though.
Intermission (2003)
Self-conscious
As I watched this film I felt increasingly aware of the people behind the camera. Maybe that was because those in front of the camera were pretty unsympathetic characters - though well portrayed by the excellent cast. Or maybe it was because the production was so self-conscious. It has no identity of it's own and just seems to draw on an established 'independent' film standard production style...which we've seen done to death - or maybe it was supposed to be ironic...if so, then that's all it was. I was left unmoved.
