John, 316 (2020)
A journey exploring faith, and choosing a path between right and wrong.
I really enjoyed watching John, 316. I thought it was a unique story, that questioned the power of faith, and finding the right path to choose in situations that wade into the grey zone of morality.
I used to work in group homes and there were constantly situations that arose that drifted into the grey area of choosing what was right to do or choosing to follow the rules. I really related to Abby's struggle to understand and accept John, because she was trying to do everything by the rule book, to be a good worker, to not get in trouble, and she was propbably taught the rules were always the best for patients. However, John was a unique case that pushed the boundaries on the rules, and showed that potentially other forms of treatment could be better for the patients, ie. Less meds.
Whether Abby believed in John's miracles or not, she began to see a positivity from his prescence on the other patients, so when the big pharma excutives took over the hospital, she fought for John.
I think this was a lovely film, and reccomend it!

Dinner in America (2020)
Brilliant Film!
You have to watch this film!! It has the quirkiness of Napoleon Dynamite, but with way more depth and commentary on life!! Such a beautiful relationship is built between Simon and Paddy, you will have a huge grin on your face watching their relationship build. Paddy is also such a fantastic female lead, that represents a different type of woman not normally showcased in film, and it was so wonderful to see and be able to relate to her.
Uncle Peckerhead (2020)

Dark Encounter (2019)
Unique take on Alien Encounters
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, all the actors were extremely talented and they gave very moving and believable performances. The cinematography was also very beautiful, and I was happy that the CGI used with in the movie was very well done and did not come off cheesy, which many other movies fall to.
Now moving to the plot and story, which I loved! (Warning spoilers ahead). If you don't want anything spoiled, I just highly suggest you watch this film, it has a shocking twist at the end which was heart wrenching, and I definitely cried when it was revealed. It is a beautiful story.
The movie starts as a thrilling alien encounter movie where you believe the daughter of a family has been abducted by aliens a year previous and they are now back for the rest of the family, and boy does it keeps you on the edge of your seat. The film did a great job creating a feeling of fear and tension, and reminded me of how I felt watching movies like 'Signs' and 'War of the Worlds'. The whole time I watched the film I was expecting everyone to be abducted or killed by the aliens, which is the normal trope for alien encounter movies, however this one did not follow this familiar pattern and threw in a shocking twist. This twist made me love the movie even more, and if I thought I was on the edge of my seat before, the final 30 minutes of the movie left me heart wrenched. The final part of the film reminded me of 'The Lovely Bones' when Susie finally faces how she was murdered and she watches from an outside perspective. In Dark Encounters you follow as the mother is 'abducted' and taken to what feels to be a parallel world to her own and she watches through the windows as the final night before her daughter disappears unfolds. At first I was expecting to watch as the aliens abducted her but then the heart wrenching twist unfolds and you discover it was actually her uncle that came and stole her innocence and life. I really appreciated this twist because it is a thoughtful narrative on human nature, and how the real monsters in the world are often people we know and love. I come from a background in child and youth care, and family support work, so I have seen many horrofic stories unfold where a family member turned out to be the monster. As sad as it is, this narrative is a heartbreaking reality in the world, and I thought it made the film extremely impactful. I appreciated that the film did not follow the usual alien encounter pattern where the aliens ended up being evil, and instead had them be beings of higher intelligence that felt the unjust disturbance in the universe and helped a family see the truth, so they could finally heal. Bravo to everyone who worked on this film, I thought it was brilliant!
