Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain (2014)
Truly astonishing
This film is a historic drama about the one of the world's worst industrial disaster caused due to negligence. It recounts the incidents that occurred on the night of the disaster. When the Union Carbide's Bhopal plant leaked 40 tonnes of a deadly gas leaving as many as 10,000 dead in one night.
Dilip a poor rickshawala lives near the carbide plant with his wife. As he tries hard to make ends meet with his very nominal income , he gets an opportunity to work at the carbide plant. He takes up the job with his heart filled with pride and starts doing his job sincerely. But soon realizes that the safety manager of the plant is neglecting safety norms and one by one the workers start falling sick.
A local journalist closely monitors this issue and tries to expose the carbide company with the help of a foreign reporter. Unfortunately that didn't help. On the night of 2nd December 1984 the disaster happened. Thousands died and the scenes were horrific and disturbing.
Filmmaker Ravi Kumar has captured everything that this drama needed. The feel of Bhopal in the 80s, the slum life, the joy of a man who lands a job at the plant and the disaster, everything if managed well. However the quality of production could have been better.
Bhopal - A Prayer for Rain is a story that needed to be told.
Angrezi Medium (2020)
Pleasing and Satisfactory.
Irfan is shown as the father of a young girl who has big aspirations and dreams, Her dream is to study abroad although she isn't an excellent student. Irfan is a small scale businessman - one of the owners of the Ghasiteram sweet shop. As a single parent he does whatever possible to fulfill his daughters dream.
The film revolves around the story of his daughters dream of studying abroad. It might seem to be a bit boring in the beginning but picks up pace as the story proceeds and becomes more and more engaging as the various plot twists and the difficulties experienced by a father to accomplish his daughter dream is shown, It is also shown in the film how children feel ashamed when their parents are around them while they are with their friends. There is also a place in the film where Irfan and his daughter's relationship deteriorate , But finally when Irfan is able to gather around 3 crores for his daughters admission by selling his family business his daughter realizes how far he went to satisfy her and finally decides that she would not study abroad , keeping in mind the hardships her father faced, and they unite. The film delivers a simple message "learn to admire what you have rather than having unrealistic dreams" it also shows how far a father can go just to satisfy his daughters needs.
