Dreamcatcher (2003)
check your pretensions at the door
12 April 2003
Warning: Spoilers
**mild spoilers** i think it's safe to say that on a large scale the modern movie industry is going down the toilet(no pun intended.) perhaps writers have become confused about what is good material...the worst movies now boom at the box office thanks to clever marketing. the trailers for "dreamcatcher" were misleading, as they promised more suspense and fright than was generated. also, i didn't read the book, but there is overwhelming evidence that this is not a complete adaptation of king's book. all that aside, dreamcatcher is a decent film. the atmosphere is heavy, dark, and helps hold interest. many people have claimed "dreamcatcher" to be filled with childish humor and plot holes. i found it's shortcomings to be of normal proportion. if one could enter the theater without preconceived notions(which is hard, granted the multitude of poor reviews,)this film is chilling and at times, intellectual. acting and effects were very well executed. much of the plot is psychological, and flashbacks are necessary for comprehension, which i think may be one of the reasons why some naive individuals walked out. this is not one of the greatest film-going experiences of 2003, but i believe it's worth the ticket price and 136 minutes of your time(especially if you're into alien conspiracies.) the miniature matrix feature was an added bonus.

Beat the Geeks (2001–2002)
superb
19 August 2002
i love beat the geeks...when i first started watching it i thought it sucked but the geeks possess a charm that draws me to them. a few minor changes like the prizes from troma have also really enhanced the show. it's probably the only show i would like to be on. blaine capatch is the epitome of that really cute geek that you aren't supposed to like (but do) and he brings with him even more appeal. as with many other excellent and under appreciated shows- beat the geeks will most likely be canceled in the near future but hopefully comedy central will be able to produce more innovative entertainment in the vain of beet the geeks and avoid crap like win ben stein's money.

stupid humans
23 June 2002
i don't care what other people think, ok so the script wasn't great but it was ok and the acting was bland in some areas but considering the culture, language and style of the early nineties it was acceptable. this and other various things ensure that this movie was less than perfect but funny and entertaining nonetheless. i hate to think that money was lost in the making of this film. it was one of my favorites as a child and i still enjoy watching it. there's a wealth of talented actors here, some making their screen debut in a fair adaption of the game. interesting. very interesting, and underrated.

what?
3 June 2002
I don't understand how this movie made the top 250, although it wasn't awful, it was boring, unoriginal and appalling as far as special effects go. Far more enthralling, poignant and visually impressive films have been made on a shoe string budget. Most of the acting was respectable, especially from Dafoe who went a long way with his limited time on-screen and one-dimensional character (like most of the others) but Kirsten Dunst? I don't care if her simplicity makes her good for the character, I see no chemistry between her and Maguire. This movie was a big disappointment. What a waste of talent and vision from Maguire and the once great Raimi.

Strangeland (1998)

it's good...
27 December 2001
I think Dee Snider is very cool for doing this movie. Although the reality portrayed in this film bears no resemblance to mine I can appreciate this for it's face value and while I'm almost sure Snider didn't intend his "art" to be comedic, it works well. The acting seen here is admittedly bad especially by Gage who's performance is exceptionally poor as both the seasoned detective who doesn't know how to use a computer and the frantic, imbecilic father that loses the bad guy, how many times? The torture found within "Strangeland" is a little focused on the pain=pleasure routine which we have become familiar with through other masochistic conquests of film, but at the same time the methods are of some interest, as long as you're into sewing mouths' shut and picking out new surgical hooks for you're next catheterized victim. The subject matter is a little iffy at times and the plot loops itsef around and through some pretty questionable events(not to say that the flick is lost in a whirl of cheap lines and bad ideas.)

The direction and filming are near flawless bringing a genuinely dark and creepy feel to Captain Howdy and the surrounding atmosphere. The result of further constituents varies for the individual viewer. I love "Strangeland." It's funny, especially to see an aging Snider try to make this work(he may be the only one taking things seriously.) It's neat to see the paths those in the entertainment industry take and of course I think masochism is neat and Captain Howdy fleshed out a little more perhaps could be an appealing character...in a different film...written by someone else. What they were aiming for here is a mirror of things that really happen, but in a much more cartoonish context. Theres a nice cameo by Robert Englund and Bile are featured as well. Anyway Dee, you tried. Oh and, I'm over twelve.

what is going on...
29 October 2001
I admit, this movie is not perfect by any means. Those who said that the ending on this movie sucks are right. If I see any more horror flicks where the family has a happy ending thanks to a helpful ghost I think i will be sick. The cast is poor, very poor and the plot is choppy and thrown together. Matthew Lillard can barely save this film but he plays his part to the fullest and despite the irony that may go along with him taking this role, he's pretty convincing as psychic. I can feel his pain in every one of those spasms. The effects are stellar and perhaps alone worth seeing the movie. Their presentation is somewhat similar to that of the bodies in seven. The whole movie is dark and haunting and I guarantee some jumps. In response to some of the other reviews, the shots of the house where "it looks like the director doesn't know what else to shoot" are for a purpose. They serve as a reflection of the aura the house holds so you can appreciate the genuine eerieness saturating the walls. It's an artistic manouevre. If only to view the incredible effects (and one hell of an original death scene) and to forever lock this film away in your mind as novelty, I recommend seeing it. There are some great laughs among the spooks as well.

criticism sucks
12 May 2001
criticism, when choosing entertainment can be very helpful but, sometimes in the process you miss the whole point. I hate films of this nature. really it was pointless and extremely gory and I came away feeling like some part of me had been stripped away and i was empty. still, in comparison to the virgin suicides, fun, welcome to the dollhouse, and almost everything written and directed by gregg araki i believe some films are purposely made to disturb and depress. why, im not sure of, but maybe it's just to make people realize that the world is not perfect, and there are those who would rather spend time focusing on complex morbidity than than tell themselves "everything is peachy" while drowning in packaged sunshine.

The Maxx (1995)
what is wrong with MTV?
6 May 2001
it truly seems like every time MTV nails something, they throw it away. I fully attribute this to the ever sickening growth of pop culture, and the way that MTV as well as many networks, feel a need to bathe in the conformity of "cuddly" entertainment. in my experience most things being "cuddly" are in actuality extremely non-entertaining. this series/film is a beautifully disturbing piece of art. even as an animation, it is much more a reality then half the rubbish being churned out today. where did it all go?
