Finding Neverland (2004)
An absolute delight
I don't think I can find words to describe the amazing experience that was watching this beautiful film. I laughed, I cried and I learned.
This movie is a gem; a treasure to be discovered with a whole lot of 'heart'.
Both Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet are terrific. Winslet is one of those rare actresses that performs without an effort. She's a natural. A special mention should go to the children, Freddie Highmore in particular.
Please, don't hesitate on embarking in this marvelous journey that Marc Forster crafted so brilliantly.
You've Got Mail (1998)
Always works...
This movie is really charming. Of course, in great part thanks to the two leads. The Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan pairing never fails.
I know there are clichés, after all, it is a romantic comedy. But it presents this positive, fresh, happy attitude towards New York City, that you just can't help loving.
I love Meg Ryan's shop. Maybe that's one of the reasons why I love this movie.
I didn't give it a 10/10 because I honestly don't believe in those internet connections. They are just too impersonal. But it's OK in this fictitious peppy world Ephron created.
Dying Young (1991)
I liked it although I admit it's not great...
I'm giving this movie an 8 out of ten for the following reasons: I am aware that it's not great but it still has "that thing" that makes you cherish it nonetheless. Even more so, some dialogues are just flat, unbelievable, but I blame the writers, not the actors.
I enjoyed Campbell Scott's performance. If anyone reading this happens to like him, I recommend Singles and the more recent Roger Dodger. Julia Roberts is good as usual, and looks really young and beautiful too.
So, I guess it works on other levels, at least for me. Anyway, check it out.
21 Grams (2003)
Good, but still lacking something more
The acting was superb (Penn is convincing in anything he does and Naomi Watts was a pleasant surprise). This is not an uplifting movie. In fact it shows a more sombre, depressing side of life. Indeed, it carries on with chopped scenes from past and present intermingled and this could cause confusion to easily distracted viewers. Although I liked the movie altogether, I left the theatre with a feeling of inconclusiveness.
Harvard Man (2001)
WHAT WAS THIS???? Just another waste of time
It premiered yesterday night on HBO in Argentina. I thought I would give it a try. I'm still sorry for eve considering it. This movie is completely pointless, where sex and drugs are shown pointlessly too. Is this a 'dark' comedy? Is it supposed to be romantic? What is it??? BAD. Don't watch it.
Mona Lisa Smile (2003)
Expecting the worse, it turned out to be really good
Apart from all the reviews that compare it to Dead Poets.. I hardly ever thought about that movie. I believe it is completely different and it doesn't pretend to be DPS. Before going to see it I read many reviews and so ended up expecting something bad. It was a good surprise. So don't get carried away about opinions because I think it was slaughtered by the critics with no terribly evident justification. Much of the dialogue and situations portrayed are still current (OK, take the family pressures and the New England 1950s atmosphere); my friends ARE those girls, single-minded. I loved that Katherine wouldn't compromise, and it also corroborated that it wasn't a cliché where everyone's lives are resolved by the final 5 minutes. The fact that it didn't have a definite conclusion made it more realistic. That's how life is: uncertain. So, go watch it and see for yourselves!!!
