White Men Can't Jump (2023)
Makes you want to either give up movies or basketball forever
Where to begin? If this movie was "stand alone" it would be maybe a 3.5 star worthy made for tv movie. It could do little to be any more different from the classic Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson film. The two similarities are that, basketball is a theme, and one white character and one black character. Aside from that, they are not similar. It seems like the studio was so excited to license the title that they forgot to hire someone to write a script. They could have ripped the old script verbatim and it probably would have been better. Andrew Schulz' character may be the only watchable performance. That is not to say that all the acting was bad, but the plot and development would have made it impossible for a main character to stand out. Lance Reddick would be ashamed to have it dedicated to him. What a barely watchable pile of Hollywood money grab excrement.
Full Swing (2023)
Really Enjoyable
I really enjoyed this series. Very unique and cool look behind the scenes of the vastly different lives of golf's best. There is a lot of highlights, tournament recaps and things that the average person not into golf may find less interesting but it is important for the series. There is a lot of talk about the LIV golf controversy as I would expect considering that is a very relevant topic in professional golf right now. Other reviews I see are calling it a biased pro PGA Tour propaganda piece and there may be some bias but I don't think it detracts from the series. The controversy seems to be pretty hard lined and people are either for it or against it. If LIV ends up pushing the game forward then that's excellent but the jury is still out. Very cool to see the family lives and personalities of people we generally only get to hear from in press conferences or social media.
Hubie Halloween (2020)
Fun Movie
I really enjoy this movie. I have watched it a few times and always like it. It is not a masterpiece by any means, but it was never meant to be. It's a fun Happy Madison production with soft comedy and pleasant visuals. It's not pretentious or full of itself. It's just a fun Halloween time movie that's just a pleasure to watch. It is also kind a movie for everyone. Most people that I know who have watched it have enjoyed it. It is one of those films that even if you do not enjoy it, you will not dislike it, or at least that is the general vibe I get from most people. I will always be a Sandler fan so that may bias me slightly.
The Bear (2022)
Only 10 star review I've ever given on IMDB
The only disappointing part of this show is that season 1 is over. Great plot. Great setting. Great acting. Extremely well done acting. Can't wait to see where it goes from here. The plot and dialogue alone could carry this show, but don't have to as it is very well rounded.
The Old Man (2022)
Very Entertaining and well acted
I am not really a spy film or show type of person but this show is great. Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow are incredible and still at the the top of their game. Very interesting plot with well done sequences. Very impressed.
Black Bird (2022)
Grabs you from the very beginning
Very well acted all the way around. Normally I am not a true crime fan in particular but Black Bird seemed interesting from the get go and hasn't disappointed for even a second. The plot is obviously based on disturbing true events which does shake you because of how well the show pulls you in. Very well done.
House of Gucci (2021)
Not good
I really wanted to like this movie, but it fell short in almost every way possible. While the cast was full of talent, the acting failed to provide this film a heartbeat. If someone were to tell you a story that took place over several decades, but left out important plot points to tie the story together, that is basically "House of Gucci". Most scenes seemed irrelevant but you continue to watch hoping it will help movie to some sort of completion, but it never comes. It reminded me of those GIFs that people send on social media with "wait til the end" but in actuality it's just the same thing repeated as a gag with no end. You watch this way too long of a film hoping for resurrection at any moment and instead are left wanting. At the end of the fiscal year many businesses have to spend a certain amount of money so they use their budget and the office ends up with a billion ink pens, it seems likely that this movie was made in a similar fashion. Only redeeming quality goes to the marketing team that convinced me to watch this hacky nonsense.
Dune (2021)
Movie is a vehicle for an overzealous editing room
The plot, or lack there of, leaves you wanting. I have not read the book. The acting was OK, the visuals are impressive and I enjoyed the score. The film lacks any depth and uses effects, editing and CGI to carry it, and not very far. If you watch the movie and think you're lost and may have missed important details, don't worry, you didn't. It is entertaining scene by scene but misses completely with any real flow. It was like watching scenes on YouTube one after another, sure it was interesting but that's about all I got out of it. It was a passive movie at best and fails to pull you in and strike any emotion whatsoever.
