The Haunted Mansion (2003)
Frustratingly Lazy & Inconsistent
*Mild Spoilers*
This movie has such amazing potential to be good, maybe even great, but flounders at every opportunity for character development and backstory.
Instead Katie Dippold phones in some breadcrumbs for you to piece together, culminating in some pretty heavy handed exposition from the main character about half way through the movie - which is the other frustrating part.
What could have easily been a satisfying ending on processing grief, Dippold instead drops half way through the movie effectively making LaKeith Standfield's character trait of being a "non-believer" wildly inconsistent for the rest of the movie.
Wilson, DeVito, & Curtis' involvement seem generally unnecessary with the former two inconsequential to anything major in the story, mere vehicles to drive a theme or scene along.
Haddish's character develops a very sudden struggle with self confidence in her craft where previously she exuded competency (even if only for show) to facilitate some barely developed Deus Ex Machina moment at the climax of the film.
Lastly, Chase Dillons character arch is barely touched upon but carries the entire weight of the "final battle".
I'd recommend this movie for kids 7 and under who are too young to understand most movies and are easily entertained by CGI and the general concept of ghosts.
This movie could have been a great story for kids and adult alike to cope with grief - shame.
Inoperable (2017)
A Well Polished Student film.
Synopsis: Amy Coney Barret replaces Bill Murray in a wildly unfunny twist on Groundhog Day, discovering additional pieces to the puzzle around her with each reliving.
Inoperable feels like a well-funded student film. Unfortunately, as with many student films, the casting is bad, the acting is awkward, and the story is poorly developed. This is a classic case of style over substance; the only enjoyable part of the movie is some of the camera direction and attention to detail in the practical fx. Onnthe other hand, however, one of the biggest problems breaking your suspension of disbelief is the set design, it tried hard to be silent hill but looks more like the janitorial staff at Scrub' Sacred Heart quit the day of. Wardrobe also suffers from the same problem, likely being managed by the same production designer.
Sound is... Good. Nothing particular stands out as food or bad in the audio department.
Ratched (2020)
Should be "Not Ratched"
Between the book and the movie, there is nothing here that aligns with the character of Nurse Ratched. As everyone else has already mentioned, it's fun to look at but it's pretty boring and the character set-up for "Nurse Ratched" completely contradicts who the character actually is. Don't waste your time on this one.
