Poor veterans !
The 20-year war and occupation of Afghanistan led to more than 70,000 Afghan and Pakistani civilians dead, hundreds of thousands wounded, and millions deprived of basic services such as access to clean water, food, health care and education. Families and communities, already in a dire humanitarian situation from previous invasions (USSR) and harsh Taliban rule, were left poorer and more shattered than ever. The humiliating defeat and withdrawal of the US-led coalition left the country again on the hands of the same medieval forces that were supposed to be eradicated. The legacy of the war is marked by the endless war crimes, Bagram and Guantanamo.
Not that the US film industry would care for any of this. For the 100th film shot on this matter, the focus is again on a US veteran (this time a woman), that was wounded on the battlefield (!), while she was bringing the gifts of western civilization (in this case water installations) to another of these "shitholes". Her dealing with physical rehabilitation and PTSD is rendered more difficult by her problematic relationship with the rest of her family: we thus learn that her decision to serve was actually an escape from home (Afghanis will be comforted by that for sure). And since things have not really changed, all she wants is to go back continue her awesome work.
By respect to all the people who suffered and continue to suffer from the tragic consequences of the war, a review of the movie itself is inappropriate. For the same reasons, people should just refrain from watching it.
