Monsoon (2019)
Just a really nice movie
Neat. This movie was a quietly introspective look at Vietnam's modern development with reflections on its recent past (American war there and another war was mentioned also). No big shockers, drama, or emotional ups/downs...and that made it really nice.
The fact that the main character is gay was a part of the storyline, not the focus at all. This movie really was quietly about love: love of your country, your parents, your siblings/friends/extended family, and romantic love. It was gentle and not emotionally taxing, even thought grief was a primary focus.
Watching this was a worthwhile way to spend an evening and expanded my horizons and understanding of the world from the perspective of people from different cultures than mine.

Sweet film, worth watching
This was a sweet movie and I really LOVED being exposed to Scottish Indian people....that's worth watching alone.
The movie did a great job with portraying how family members feel when one person breaks away....and the kinds of dynamics you have to work through when that person returns. The love story itself wasn't the best part of the film frankly, what was more interesting was whether the main character would choose her heart or run away.
So, even though this is an LGBTQ film....the best parts are actually the ethnic diversity, the family dynamics, and the question of how true will you be to yourself....and why you consider not.
Rag Tag (2006)
great romance without tragedy
This is one of my all-time favorite films, for sure. Low budget and not the highest quality - yes. But the storyline, character development, and portrayal of diversity is worth getting past its cinematic limitations. This is a real love story without taking you anywhere super dark or sad (thank you!!). Just a sweet, poignant, and happy-ending film that isn't overly explicit either. I wish these actors and the director had more feature films available in the US. This movie is truly a hidden gem. Pro tip: turn on closed captions to understand most of the dialogue.
