Bad Santa (2003)
Hilarious
This is by far the funniest movie of the year, probably of the last several years. Wet your pants hysterical. Billy Bob Thornton is brilliant as the most depraved Santa ever, and Tony Cox, Bernie Mac, Lauren Graham and John Ritter are also great. Leave the kids at home, bring your twisted sense of humor, and go see this film.
The Brother from Another Planet (1984)
Great film
I love this film! Lots of laughs, lots of humanity. It's awesome that such an unknown cast can deliver such a great performance. The guys in the bar are hysterical. Every scene is a gem, but the card trick on the subway is one of my all time favorites. Go rent this movie today. 10 out of 10.
The Recruit (2003)
Boring and Predictable
This "suspense thriller" was a snooze. Totally predictable at every step. Everything is as it seems. Aside from Pacino, uninteresting characters. The convenient, trite ending must have been snatched off the shelf at the local Walmart. Long, tedious aerial shots of a bus traveling to the training center - wow, that was really gripping. And lots and lots and lots of really exciting shots of computer screens. Save your money. If you've seen the trailer, you've seen everything there is to see.
Go rent The Usual Suspects. Or go watch paint dry. You'll be more entertained.
The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)
excellent
Hated this movie the first time I saw it, loved it the second time. Complex characters, surprising plot twists, great suspense, beautiful settings.
Spoilers: Tom's slide into madness and violence is fascinating (and convincing). Thrilling to watch his web of lies become more and more tangled. The scenes at the Opera and at the Rome cafe were nailbiters.
Philip Seymour Hoffman was brilliant. His character is fabulously awful. "How's the peeping Tommy?" I would rent this movie again just for the 15 minutes he is on screen.
