Une liaison pornographique (1999)
Man meets woman : from sex to a perfect relationship
One way to distinguish excellent from good or medium films is the fact that no matter how many times you see it you don't get bored of it. This is a film that has stayed in the back of my mind for ever! It's got everything in it. The acting is brilliant: both Natalie Baye and Sergi Lopez give top performances, they have touched the heart of their characters. The title I also like, because this is precisely a story of a liaison that started at least in a pornographic sense. The music, in particular the track that opens and closes the film, is superb, I can say no more about it! The script is very original, it is a study of the most intrinsic and human aspects of a relationship. I have also noted subtle similarities with Francois Triffault's film "The woman next door". For example the cleaner lady that walks around the corridors of the hotel holding a trolley with lots of linen on it. A wonderful film! French cinema is alive and kicking!
Japanese Story (2003)
This is a brilliant film!
Such an original script! At the cutting edge of everything that concerns human nature: curiosity for someone from an entirely different culture (with all the stereotypes involved), career (with all its obligations and anxiety), sex (mutual attraction of two different people depicted in such a natural and honest way), love (the desperate need to confide in somebody), death (that can come at any minute without any warning). Toni Collete is simply BRILLIANT! The way she moves and talks and makes her gestures is so natural. She's one of my favorites. I think this one is perhaps her best performance so far. Gotaro Tsunashima really has the hard part here though. His role is way more ambiguous. What does his character represent anyway? What does he seek in Australia? And he delivers it superbly! With a big mystery about his path. This is the way it should be. It is the heart of the script that demands it to be this way, no matter how tragic at the end. Simply beautiful! Films like this one really deserve to be advertised more. Well done Australia!
Vengo (2000)
Passion for Music and Music for Passion
It's an excellent film for those that love the music. One can trace the origins of flamenco and, in particular, its links with traditional Arabic music. An authentic passionate piece of art interpreted by authentic real people. Loved every moment of it and wanted to be one of those excellent musicians or dancers.
