The Woman in the Window (2021)
A perfectly enjoyable thriller!
So. This was actually a 7/10, but I'm giving it a 9 to balance out reviews here.
First up, let's say I READ THE BOOK! It's been a while though, I read it in 2018. So I did not have every little detail in mind anymore, which was probably helpful.
I read and watch a lot of thriller, it's my favorite genre. This was definitely one of the better ones! My husband had not read the book and also liked the movie and thought it was easy to follow. I watched it in one sitting, which is super unusual for me, mostly I fall asleep.
Amy Adams was outstanding. I don't say that about a lot of actors, I don't have any favorites or care about who's playing whom. But she was really, really good.
Yes, there was a rather graphic fight scene that seemed a bit like classic horror. But why not? A little bit of genre-bending, it's okay.
I liked the lighting, the gloomy atmosphere, the twist at the end. Is it perfect? No. Is it good? Hell yes!
Behind Her Eyes (2021)
Friends with a robot?
I fail to understand the appeal of David and Louise. David is good-looking, yes. Is that enough for people to serially go crazy over him? Present-day Adele literally acts like a robot, I do not understand why Louise (or anyone) would want to be friends with her. David and Adele seem to seldom exchange more than two-word sentences and call this a marriage because they happen to live in the same house. Yes, I know they shall come cross troubled, but troubled couples tend to fight. Not just ignore each other.
Louise is the only character in the show that acts somewhat relatable. I actually looked up Eve Hewson's other work to see if she always acts that robotically. Apparently she does not, which must mean that is was done on purpose. But..why?!
The plot twist was indeed new and original, only if you not mind supernatural aspects though.
There are quite a lot of plot holes/answers that never concluded, which I find very lacking. What about David and Adele the night her parents died? How can Louise afford to live in London, working only three days a week? Why did she and her Ex divorce?
Sightless (2020)
Meh. 4.5. Don't bother if you're a thriller aficionado
I'm a huge fan of Marvista productions usually cause I like the sensationalism. Yes, yes, I know, not everyone's cup of tea. That kind of falls flat in here. The movie is called thriller but borders on horror. Nothing too bad, but quite a few jumpscare moments.
The so-called EXPLOSIVE TWIST I saw a million miles coming. I waited in the final moments to see if there are any add-ons or changes to it cause I could not believe that this really was it. Not after I have seen more than one article about the UNBELIEVABLE twist. There weren't even many red herrings! Or any!
Madeleine Petsch's acting also is at times unbelievable and so is the writing. Why could they not have hired an actual blind actress? Representation, people! Sometimes she reaches for objects, know the stairs are where they are, HOW. It just was not believable.
All in all, rather forgettable, not at all original.
Let It Snow (2019)
Really well done
I am not one for rom-coms usually cause I don't need to see Jennifer Aniston, being single, falling for the wrong guy for the 4544th time.
This one though was different. It reminded me of Love, Actually - but not that deep. Yes, it centers around teenagers, so that's to be expected. Everything is connected in a way and everyone is going through their own struggles. We experience all kinds of struggles a young person that age could go through.
Thank God it's not the same Hollywood actors that are being used over and over and over again. A fresh take on Christmas movies, romantic comedies, and teen movies.
I thoroughly enjoyed it, even though I am over 30.
The Undoing (2020)
A good suspense with some major plot holes
Well, where do I start with this. I really liked the premise - I am a sucker for whodunnits, slow burns, suspense in general.
It starts off really well. I think the first episode is what enticed a lot of viewers. Unfortunately, it went a bit downhill from there.
Positives:
My main issues:
1. TOO MUCH FOCUS ON GRACE. Shows/movie with a ton of celebrities are usually a turn-off for me cause I don't buy the character they're playing, it often is supposed to make up for lack of quality AND they don't try as hard. Grace, Grace, Grace. Why did we not learn more about Elena?! Her life, her relationship, her kids? Kidman's acting is lackluster, the procedures that apparently have been done on he face make it almost impossible for he to convey emotion. (Grant, although considered an A-lister as well, stuns with his performance).
So many weird close-up shots , WHY. Very annoying breathing and weird sighs, too. I was NOT surprised to learn she was a producer. Gotta push yourself to the front line somehow!
BIGGEST issue with this show.
Not surprised that Kidman was a producer, pushing herself into the spotlight.
1b. Grace is distressed, worried, yet every day wears her hair open and perfectly styled? HOW. WHY. No ponytails, no messy buns? Also, whats up with these weird coats?
2. The friend (Sylvia) is supposed to be this bitchy, gossip-y person and then she turns out to be a lawyer!? Highly educated, successful people do not tend to focus on others that much.
SPOILERS!!
. . . . . . . .
3. We never learn why Grace goes on walks, why she went to the hospital, why Elena painted that portrait of hers, why the phone calls?
3. Grace has a PHD from Harvard, her husband is an oncologist, and he runs out of money after like 3 months of not working?! HOW
4. Her FIL just nonchalantly gives 2 million for bail for the SIL he hates. Sure.
5. Some weird randomness - Sylvia telling her daughter not to smile during ballet. WHY. Grace having at least 2 fancy pyjamas at her dad's place. Where did her dad's money come from in the first place? Why did she, as a psychologist, not notice before her husband might be a narcissist?
All in all, very watchable, but don#t ask too many questions. Just consume.
Nightcrawler (2014)
Meh
I like thrillers. This was rated really well. So I thought we'd give it a shot.
I found a non-story. A guy who apparently has no real education, no proper job, yet we never learn why. He has a huge vocabulary though and is a great negotiator. Why he wouldn't further his education we'll never know.
He stumbles upon an opportunity to make money, consequently becomes obsessive. That's really all there is to this movie.
I have yet to understand what the point is other than obsession can be become dangerous and journalism is sometimes borderline unethical? Yes, I knw that before. So what?
3 stars for the acting fo Lou and his assistant.
Into the Wild (2007)
Egomaniac, celebrated as a hero
When something is celebrated by the majority of people, it's usually advisable to take a closer look at it.
This movie was recommended in my "critical thinking" class in university, so we watched it. Let me prephase this by saying I gave it 2 stars rather than 1 for the acting and scenery.
The movie is about a guy that is unhappy with his life and wants to "really live". Consequently, he burns (WHY? WHY not donate?) his money and moves into the woods. Not really though, because he lives in a school bus.
Apparently, "really living" also means not caring in the slightest about anyone, including your mom, who has no idea where you are. Would it really have hurt to let her know?! Really?
Just rebelling and going "against everything" without a second thought or purpose is for 13-year-olds. Not for grown men trying to go against the grid.
Whenever you encounter some fan of this movie they tell you you just "did not understand" it. Which is kind of the easiest reasoning to come up with to degrade someone else who has differing opinions.
Please take that critical thinking a step further and don't stop it "doing everything different than the norm is critical and therefore great".
Orígenes secretos (2020)
Started out so well...
First up, this is a SPANISH movie. Not sure why people complain about this as it's pretty darn obvious. Newsflash, countries outside the US are allowed to make movies.
Let's start by saying I'm not unit superheroes at all. I am, however, into Spanish thrillers. This one started out pretty well, with a nice balance between the old cop, the young cop, and the nerdy son.
Just about the middle though it takes a turn to absurdity. The end is ....not far fetched necessarily, but really more appropriate for a comic then a movie for grown ups.
It was enjoyable, especially the first half, but be prepared for a weaker ending.
