Monster (2022)
Very disturbing but exciting one!
Gave me nightmares for two straight nights while I watched the series. But I gotta say Peters is outstanding as Dahmer. Excellent and painfully realistic portrayal of a serial killer. The actor who did Lionel's role needs a special mention. He simply was a wormhole which I used to dive back into time and understand a father's conflicting emotions in such a situation. I would have been disappointed had this been a documentary because there are enough serial killer documentaries out there.
The fictionalised real story of an infamous serial killer is what drew my attention to this.
Caution: Those who are averse to violence, please stay away from this. But if you wanna know how the mind of a serial killer works, you came to the right place.
The Sopranos (1999)
Such a what I'd call a "candid" series
My fling with this series dates back to the time when i have started watching "Twin Peaks". That series didn't augur much with me as it was a bit quiet and prosaic. Then i thought I'd never watch 90s series again. But I was lured into watching the Sopranos by the mere rating in Imdb.
And again, the first two to three episodes, I felt, were real boring(actually they won't be anyone; I have watched em with a misplaced aversion towards 90s web series). And I didn't stop from there. It was such a brilliant series. Very beautifully written.
The major chunk of the series comprises ceaseless banter and people gorging on food in restaurants, which lent a rather candid feel to all the episodes. The craft of the characters etchers are second to none. Christopher, a hothead. Tony, aggressively condescending. Sil, pliant errand man with that undershot mouth. Paulie, horrible ruminator with unrelenting nostalgia(my favorite character of the whole series). AJ, ADHD-afflicted and so conflicting and annoying. Melfi, the apathetic shrink.
There were some questions left answered for me in the end, of course. But i don't like to talk about them as they might be spoilers.
Go watch it. I am not sure if you'd like it or not. But, The Sopranos is always worth a try.
The Sinner: Part VI (2020)
So addictive! Seeps into ua mind like a poison
I have just been six episodes into the latest season of The Sinner. Oh my god! This is incredible stuff, and dark too. In fact, the darkest I've seen in the recent times. It makes you question your existence, question God and the whole world. I am so drawn to the lines they use in the series. DEEP DOWN,WE ARE ALL SCARED. BUT WE WOULDN'T WANT TO SHOW IT. WE'D RATHER BE ANGRY. That, when felt better, holds infinite meaning in it. It was like a vague psyche game.
I've watched the last two seasons too. They were unfathomable too,but the latest one beats em by a long stretch. I am seeing mediocre reviews for season-3. May be, this one appeals better to people with conflicting personalities. I wouldn't say I am like that, but I just dwell and put myself in the character's place momentarily and it all makes sense. I've just completed sixth episode which ended with one of the terrifying scenes I have ever seen. Hope you like it too.
Dexter (2006)
Dangerous, doting, donut-loving, detrimental, dysfunctional Dexter
I'm waiting for this moment, literally. I think this'd help you decide whether to watch it or not.
This is one of the best and the most conflicting shows I've ever watched. One of a kind. I mean, how I got attached to the characters and their lives. To say the least, I've delayed watching Dexter deliberately so that I can be on it longer.
Essentially, Dexter is about a person who got so much disturbed by his mother's death that he starts finding comfort in killing people. As much as the sight and smell of blood nauseates us, Dexter loves it. Dexter lives for it.
The best part is that he operates on a code taught by his father when he learnt that Dexter was turning into a serial killer. I'd better refrain from telling you that. It continues for the whole series and you got to know what it is by watching it. Michael Hall is just about the perfect fit for the creep character. The way he looks at others( like you're looking from above your glasses, I got addicted to it. Well, I tried to practice that glare. It's just so intimidating.
Another thing this series talks about is the sister-brother relationship between Dexter and Deb. They both work in Miami metro, both quite studious in their jobs the most ambivalent in their minds. At a time, I wondered if Debra is the most conflicting character ever. But then comes into the picture,Dexter. Apart from the fact that Jennifer and Michael were a couple, nothing of that sort appears on the screen except at some part when Debra feels pulled towards him. That's where the ugliest stuff unravels, though.
The spirit uplifter guy is Masuka, though. He too would have his stuff to deal with. I mean, every character is portrayed with utmost splendor.
You gotta watch it, if you wanna find out how smart serial killers carry themselves in the society "without getting caught"
" Tonight is the night"
Bodyguard (2018)
Intense,fast-paced. Infallible story line.
What kept me intrigued all the while I been watching Bodyguard is that the storyline never had a trough. Kudos to John Strickland for never failing to drop that goosebumpy thrill I'm sure everyone would have felt. Richard Madden is perfect for the war-affected soldier role. And Keeley, yes. Anyone might have done the role but I think she should have completely outdone them in the end.
And the last episode is the real high. Towered high. One thing I can say is, watch this for the first and final episodes. Happy watching
Breathe: Into the Shadows (2020)
An engaging thriller. Watch it in on go to relish the experience!
The thing that makes the Indian movies or Web series stand out is the inclusion of Puranas in the storyline. In fact, some web series make it the headline for the flow of thrill. It's a good sign they didn't include any sages or Babas in the series.
Breathe : Into the Shadows is one such mythological thriller leaving us a lot to google about the condition portrayed by an artist in the series. The best move to make it worth the watch is to keep watching until it's over. In one sitting, I mean. I don't want to spill the plot. So that's it.
The whole crew members worked their asses off to get it right, we can see it from the way the plot uncovers taking great care not to mess up the minds of those watching. However, at some moments, I found the screenplay a little bit off, that's the only reason I gave 9 stars. The rest of it is just awesome.
Sacred Games (2018)
Fascinatingly gory bottomline .And philosophical too!
Sacred Games. Does that sound philosophical?Hell yeah.Ain't it?Indian stuff all over.Gangs,Wars,Heroes etc etc.But what makes this stand out is the philosophy exhibiting from it.KABHI KABHI LAGTHA HAI AAPUN HI BHAGWAN HAI.This line sets the hearts on rage.Nawazuddin as Gaitonde, apart from his funny attire as a typical Indian, is the heart of the series.Never have I thought could an ordinary guy with barely physically built appearance and dusky skin color can go goosebumps on you. Literally, I felt it.
Saif does a great job,per se, as a flawless and grumpy police officer. Pankaj Tripati.Ah,this man.Well known for Mirzapur.Guruji!Aap hero nikla series me.He barely appears in first season. But for what it's worth,he nailed his character.
Overall, watch if for Indian essence. Nd........
GAITONDE (Nawazuddin )
The Forgotten Army - Azaadi ke liye (2020)
Patriotic and Inspiring
Such a beautiful show with all elements included. The music and the theme are at it's best.
The fight for independence.Although we can't completely and accurately understand what really happened back then,a series like this one gets us atleast a speck of idea about the sacrifices our Indians have done.It is worth knowing.
JAI HIND
The Outsider (2020)
Unprecedentally intriguing!
A complete series worth a ten seasons,if continued with the same vigour of storyline.
The story starts with an interesting plotline and simply weaves you in as you keep on watching. After such a tremendous start in the first episode, one'll feel it lagged for the next two episodes. And it picks up again in the middle and never gets down from then.
From "What in the world is going on?" to "Omg!This's creepy" and finally to "YEAH MAKES SENSE NOW",everything is solely for the goddamn thrill.
A fantastic thriller you don't want to miss
Game of Thrones (2011)
Not something we get to witness always
Loved it.Loved it.
I'm not much into English Movies.Especially series type. But this one. From the moment I started to watch it,I can't just stop thinking about it.Binge-watched it in less than 20 days. This is so far the best one.
And coming to the character portrayal and plot value, everyone acting in this drama will have some kind of importance stamped to their roles. There won't be someone whom we can say "This guys buys the time for this episode.A hell lot of houses are shown.Every house has its own priority and its own business to see to.
You will badly miss some of the characters after you binged this series(uh I'm sure, actually, you gonna binge it).Tyrion Lannister,I tell you this, will remain as one of the best roles forever. The conspiracies, the rational thinking on how to attack and cease the iron throne. A treat to watch. You are gonna watch it.Promise me!
