Enjoy True-Crime? Consider Watching This.
1 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Killer Legends is perfect for those who enjoy learning about true-crimes and urban legends.

But, I wouldn't recommend it for the average moviegoer.

It delves deeply into the actual evidence surrounding the popular cases, while providing images that may be disturbing for some, if not all, viewers.

I know I was definitely curious about other true-crime stories and urban legends after watching this movie. Which, I was able to do for free on YouTube! I still have to get to Joshua Zeman's other movie about Cropsey.

An Unfortunate Review.
29 May 2020
Well the day has come, I've found a Mike Flanagan film that I didn't enjoy in the slightest. It was so predictably unoriginal that I was actually bored. And it pains me to write a review that's not gushing about his work, but I just can't give it to this one. I was intrigued by the opening and I thought it was an interesting angle having a faux psychic become exposed to the supernatural elements. But there wasn't enough original substance to hold my attention for long.

Complete Restructure Of The Original Story
29 May 2020
We're just going to go ahead and take the continuity from the previous movie and throw it right out the window and do something else instead for the sake of making future movies.

That's what the synopsis of this movie should've been.

I can't even begin to get into my genuine thoughts of this movie.

Just know that I HATED it in its entirety.

I Regret Watching This
29 May 2020
I did not expect to be as disappointed with this movie as I am right now. There was so much potential for Gretel & Hansel to be a terrifying retelling of Hansel and Gretel. So much disappointment.

I can't really provide much information about the last like 2/3 of the movie because I all but stopped paying attention. I was so bored!

My first do not recommend of 2020!

Decent For A Low-Budget Movie
29 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is not a horror movie: call it suspense, mystery, drama, thriller or supernatural. But don't you dare call this a horror movie there is nothing remotely horrific about it.

The acting was not that best that I've seen but not the worst either. The conversations between Callie and Tricia felt awkward; I didn't get the impression that they were actually sisters.

The story was definitely along the lines of a Stephen King short story, which is part of the reason why I enjoyed it. Sometimes it's nice to have a story end differently then it's supposed to, not every story needs the classic happy ending to be a good story.

I enjoyed Hush a lot more than I thought I was going to. It had a tense atmosphere, a good story and a well-rounded cast. I definitely recommend this movie to others.

Mike Flanagan Has Done It Again!
29 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I thought it was freaking fantastic! They went so deep into the psychological aspect that I was even questioning what was real and imagined. I really enjoyed the scenes where the real and imaginary versions of themselves were a harder to distinguish between.

The light bulb and the apple.....ugh, I'm still gagging about it. I loved it.

I think it's an interesting angle to include Tim's speech where he explained their whole childhood in a way that was anything but supernatural. It feels so raw and real that I'm almost convinced that Kaylie did actually go crazy.

An absolute MUST-WATCH.

An Underrated Movie.
29 May 2020
I'd say that The Hole in the Ground is a fairly decent movie to watch. It just could've had more substance at certain points. But, I mean there's flaws in every movie if you try to find them.

Could've Been Better
29 May 2020
Most of what I didn't enjoy about this movie had to do with the atmosphere and the pacing. I never felt like I was on the edge of my seat or wondering what was going to happen next.

I'd say that this movie is decent enough for a one-time watch.

Watchable, But Underwhelming And Annoying
29 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A movie titled "Secret Obsession" should've solely revolved around the obsession aspect.

The first hour should've been about three things: The watching, the planning, and the attack. Followed by the entirety of this movie which could've been condensed into that last 30 minutes.

Absolutely no one would've been fooled that Russell was anything other than her attacker.

Instead of being gripping and suspenseful it was just an annoying movie.

The only redeeming aspect to this movie is that Jennifer didn't make all of the stupid decisions that could've been made.

A Must-Watch Foreign Film
29 May 2020
Dark and humorous with an unexpected turn of events.

I think one of the best things about Parasite is that for a foreign film it doesn't feel like a foreign film. At least in my experience foreign films always felt somewhat polarizing like either you watched them or you didn't and I feel like this movie is a good starting point. It feels very familiar even though its Korean and I didn't expect it to be that way.

I highly recommend watching.

Before I Wake (2016)

Stop Classifying Everything As "Horror"
29 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Before I Wake, in my eyes, is a supernatural drama all the way.

This story deals a lot with grief, coping mechanisms, lots of sleep deprivation, and copious amounts of coffee.

The first half of Before I Wake was very tense and it had a great eerie atmosphere which I appreciated. Then we had some real action with the Cancerman and at first I found the design to be almost laughable but I tried to keep in mind that it was coming out of the mind of an eight year old. So I gave it a bit of a pass. And then at the end we learn the meaning behind the Cancerman and it all made more sense and my heart ached even more than it already was.

When Cody is able to show them the dream version of their son Sean for the first time my heart broke into millions of pieces.

There was one scene that I especially enjoyed where Jessie is staring at a hollow eyed version of her son Sean sitting in an old style stand alone tub. And then he starts acting out his death scene and she stands her ground and she's able to turn away from him and walk out of the door. That took real strength for her to do.

Before I Wake is a really great movie and I think more people should give it a chance. If you haven't seen this movie consider adding it to your to-watch list.

Doctor Sleep (2019)
10/10
A Worthy Successor
29 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'd just quickly like to point out how sad this movie made me feel. I felt sad for Danny trying to get his life together, I felt sad when I learned why they called him doctor sleep, I felt really sad near the end. I don't think I've ever had a horror-esque movie pull at my heart the same way. Granted it was more on the drama side for the majority of the movie.

The actual horror was maybe the last 30-45 minutes of this monstrously long 3 hour movie.

Abra Stone. Abra freaking Stone.

What a wonderfully creepy and magical little girl she is. There was so many scenes that I was just awestruck at her abilities. I mean, she had to be one of the most powerful psychics I've ever seen at that age. She's even stronger than Danny I think.

Overall, this movie was fantastic through and through. Something that just about anyone can enjoy. I thoroughly recommend this movie to everyone.

Gerald's Game (2017)

I Almost Had To Look Away...Almost.
29 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Gerald's Game is a perfectly crafted psychological survival and I surely recommend it to anyone that wants to watch it.

The first Mike Flanagan movie that I watched was Doctor Sleep and I absolutely loved it, so when I saw that he made another Stephen King book into a movie I knew I had to watch it.

The escape scene nearly killed me to watch. So, so good.

The only thing about Gerald's Game that I really didn't like was the inclusion of the moonlight man. It felt unnecessary and it really didn't add any shock factor to the plot either. I just could't get behind the character and I think the movie would've been just as effective without him.

A Superbad Gender Bend Perfect For 2019
29 May 2020
Overall, I'd say that if you enjoyed the humor of movies like Superbad and 21 Jump Street. You'll probably enjoy Booksmart quite a bit like I did. At first I wasn't sure; but by the end I can say this is probably a movie I wouldn't mind watching again.

Good for when you need a laugh.

Ready or Not (I) (2019)

Watchable But Not For Me
29 May 2020
I'd say for the first 10-15 minutes I found myself quite bored and I spent a majority of that time looking at my phone.

The satire in Ready or Not is probably the thing that nudges up my approval rating for it because without that aspect it's just a very low tier movie for me.

The acting was kind of mediocre I'd say, especially Samara Weaving; she got on my nerves. But, thankfully Adam Brody was there to graciously distract me. His character Daniel Le Domas is the only one I actually connected to throughout the film.

This isn't a horrible, unwatchable movie. I just personally didn't enjoy it the way others might've.

Orphan (2009)

I Waited Over 10 Years To Jump On This Boat
29 May 2020
Whenever a movie comes out and immediately becomes over-hyped I tend not to watch them right away. Over-hyped movies set absurd expectations which can really skew your genuine thoughts on the movie.

I chose to watch this movie now because there's talk of a prequel movie in the works all about Esther's backstory. So, I figured now it was time to watch.

This movie was chilling and uncomfortable in all the right ways and even though I knew the "big twist" going into it. I still enjoyed the movie as a whole.

I think Orphan deserves a spot on everyone's list of must-watch horror movies. It was certainly worth the hype it received back in '09 and it's still worth the hype now.

The Boy (2016)

Surprisingly Watchable
29 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't have a lot of expectations going into The Boy.

I thought it was just going to be the run of the mill possessed doll story. And I was completely on board with the doll being possessed by the little boy and having some kind of exorcism situation.

But that twist definitely grabbed my attention and made the movie a whole lot more watchable.

When Brahms comes crashing through the wall I nearly lost my mind. Certainly unexpected!

Thinking about this movie as a whole I don't think it's that bad of a story and I would recommend watching it at least once if these are the types of movies you enjoy.

The Conjuring Universe Terrifies Me To My Core
29 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
So, you might be wondering how exactly this movie fits into The Conjuring Universe timeline.

The Curse of La Llorona is set in 1973 taking place in between Annabelle Comes Home (1971-72) and The Conjuring 2 (1976-77).

The only physical connection between the movies is the appearance of Father Perez who was one of the main character's in Annabelle.

The atmosphere of the movie is set right away, and I was not ready for the opening scene Marisol Ramirez (La Llorona) really got into her character and it showed. Her quick movements are absolutely unnerving. The scene in the beginning where she cracks her head to the side feels inhuman and yes I jumped and I have no shame. Some moments are deserving of actual jumps and that one certainly was.

The only moment I really didn't enjoy as much was when Anna (Linda Cardellini) first sees La Llorona standing in the hallway and screams. Her scream just didn't resonate with me it didn't sound like a true terrified scream.

The Invisible Man (I) (2020)

A Thriller Worth Watching
29 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I thought The Invisible Man was amazing. It's a tantalizingly addictive thriller with a modern spin on escaping domestic violence.

Adrian. Griffin. Adrian freaking Griffin. The psychopathic character we now all love to hate. This man was so perfectly controlling and manipulative. He enjoyed every moment of terrorizing Cecilia and watching her slowly break apart as he isolated her from everyone.

There was only a few little scenes that I didn't find quite believable. If you've watched this movie and you recall the scene in the restaurant than you know what I'm talking about.

All in all, I thought this was a great movie to watch and definitely something you should get to while we're all stuck in isolation ourselves.

The Grudge (2019)
3/10
Leave. This. Franchise. Alone.
29 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Taking everything into consideration I think The Grudge, while visually appealing and well produced. Is a complete and utter waste of time for fans of (The American) Grudge movies.

There was absolutely no reason to go back and make a "sidequel" for this movie franchise just to remake everything so its scarier and has more gore.

What's even more frustrating than the simple existence of this movie is the fact that it doesn't even have Kayako or Toshio.

Scratch that. It has Kayako for maybe 2.5 seconds.

Instead, they attempt to create a brand new Grudge in a brand new house. Yet, the movie opens with the woman outside of the original house IN JAPAN.

I'm sorry, but you don't get to make your own rules when you're trying to tie your film into a pre-existing universe.

YOU. JUST. DON'T.

I can recommend this movie for its quality, not it's plot.

The Lodge (2019)
7/10
Close, but no cigar.
29 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The Lodge is a psychological thriller without a doubt. But, there's nothing I would consider to be actually scary about it, at least not in the popcorn throwing hide under your covers kind of way.

I would say its along the same lines of stories like The Shining, The Turning, or even Oculus. It makes you question the reality of what you're seeing and some movies do really well with that. For me, The Lodge didn't quite hit the nail on the head but it got close.

The almost suffocating feeling of total isolation is what really sells this movie for me. I think that they did a fantastic job creating an uneasy, tense and inescapable atmosphere.

I usually appreciate movies that capitalize on the slow burn subtleties of horror. But, I think this movie would've been better if there had been more action...more of a fight for survival but then have it ultimately end the way it did in the first place. I think that would've bumped this movie up a few more stars for me.

Fighting and then losing anyway will always be preferable to not fighting and losing.

Surprisingly...underwhelming
29 May 2020
In my eyes, Lin Shaye and Henry Thomas have become almost iconic within the horror movie genre. So, when I see both of their names in the same film I expect it to be nothing short of terrifying.

I believe this movie tried but, ultimately, failed in its attempt to do just that.

Unfortunately, this movie has been added to the ranks of movies I just can't see myself recommending to other people. And I find that to be truly pitiful.

Love, Simon (2018)
9/10
I enjoyed the book more.... BUT....
4 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
At first, I thought this movie was just another over-hyped movie that was probably mediocre at best.

I loved this movie so very much, and it totally deserves ALL of the hype.

BUT...I still enjoyed the book more and here's why:

The book definitely had more instances where Simon had encounters with Blue without knowing it and that what made the book so great! Once you figured out who Blue was every part that had him in it made you yell at the pages trying to get Simon to hear you.

Also, I distinctly remember Leah and Simon's sister being in an all girl band, yet that scene is completely omitted from the movie.

What got me the most during the movie was when Jennifer Garner's character is talking to Simon and she says "You get to exhale now Simon. You get to be more you than you've been in a very long time."

Gahhhh, so good.

So, while I do take issue with some of the things in Love, Simon that's just because I prefer the book more. Definitely a movie to add to your must-watch list if you haven't already.

But the rundown is that it's a good PG-13 movie...but it's not at all a drama or horror or mystery it's a flat out psychological thriller. So just call it what it is please?
