Watch it... and forget it, that should almost sum up this film. No real plot, no depth in the characters, and certainly no great acting ! so enjoy for what it is, which is a light comedy which doesn't try to be specially intelligent, and forget it.. as I will On the other hand, if you really want to see what a film on food should sound or look like, take a peek at the following: Eat drink man woman, le festin de babette, Tampopo, like water with chocolate... if the producer/script writer of this film had only seen one of them, and stolen a few ideas, perhaps woman on top would not be so insipid... which, for a film about peppers, is quite an achievment !!!

This is a very moving film about the big tragedy of the Armenian people who were slaughtered in millions by the turks in 1915, or rather about the ones who escaped and who after seeing their whole families murdered, had to make a life in a foreign country, while trying to deal with the past, or at least not to let the past destroy them. Superb acting from Claudia Cardinale, Omar Shariff, Isabelle Sadoyan and Nathalie Roussel. It goes in the line with films like "La Gloire de mon pere" and " le chateau de ma mere". Giving a very good description of what was life was in the South of France at the beginning of the centuries, and what were the people expectations (at least, that is how I feel it). If you are expecting violence and gore, that is not what you will get here. Also, let us not forget that the "Armenian Genocide" has never been acknowledged by the Turkish Government, and was only recognised last year by the French one.

From the acting to the dialog and the situations, this is simply one of the best films I have ever seen. The situations rings true, the dialogs are simple and natural and the characters become alive in front of us.

Worth more than a 10

After ten minutes of this nonsense, I wanted to get out... unfortunately I was in the middle of the row. Also being an optimist, I thought.. It cannot last long... something will happen... anything !! I was wrong. It's worse than bad. It is nothing. There is no actors, no dialog, nothing to look at unless you enjoy the contemplation of a pair of glasses on a table for 5 minutes. My only reaction ?? Never again please !

I saw this film when it came out in 1984, and since then, have been unable to forget it. I have been looking for it everywhere, from shops to the Internet without success. It seemed to have disappeared from the surface of the Earth. Finally, ARTE, a French/German TV channel, decided to broadcast it two months ago...and of course, I recorded it. It is based around a very simple storyline. A chess match. The two main players in the world. Both russians. Two generations fighting against each other, and also two visions of the world. The oldest generation who stayed and endured the last 50 years of Russian history. The younger one who left, but not unscathed. For them, only one thing matters : Chess, but for the outside world, and their entourage, many other things come into account: propaganda, money etc... From the actors to the plot, I cannot find any default with it. It is soberly and superbly played by Michel Piccoli (it is probably the only film where I really liked him) and the whole cast is a marvel. To be seen absolutely !!!
