Real Steel (2011)
Robot With A Lot of Heart
Is it possible to cry during a ROBOT movie?
I knew a little about this movie beside this is about robot doing boxing etcetera etcetera, but from first scene I realized that this is not some CGI-vaganza with little to offer. This is something more.
Hugh Jackman is really good as ex-boxer/estranged father who thinks he knows all about boxing robot business yet we sensed that he's such a looser all along. With the arrival of his estranged son (great Dakota Goyo) and ATOM a robot that really captures what human really is, he finally learns something more about his life and his purpose.
And Evangeline Lilly, what can I say? She infused vulnerability, humility, and beauty at every scene she's in. I think in the future she will be one of A-List star, if not already happening.
And did I tell you it is possible to cry during ROBOT movie? With Real Steel I can assure you that it is much much possible. It's beautifully written and executed. Every moment counts - something that Michael Bay should learn :) - and I can't wait for its sequel.
BRING IT!!!
Thor (2011)
Lovely Superhero Character
Lovely, the word seems don't fit with superhero movie genre like THOR. But it is lovely. Somehow, Kenneth Branagh defied the challenge to make it believable and yet he surpassed that expectation with such grounded character, grounded story - albeit grandeur background, and Chris Hemsworth as titular character in this movie is really a breakout star in the making.
One scene really captivated those feeling, it's when Thor and Jane Foster make an intimate conversation about Ygdrassil (correct pronunciation?) and 'hooble' telescope, I found it so lovely, like I watched some romantic comedy genre, but this is not.
In the mean time, Tom Hiddleston really bring the menace to Loki character and easily make non familiar audience understand his motivation and he will really fleshed out for Avengers movie next year.
I gave it 8/10 for solid action, solid story, lovely character, and of course Miss Jane Foster herself, Natalie Portman :)
Homeland: Grace (2011)
Solid, But Really?
Homeland is fresh series that I try to enjoy because I always interesting with this kind of drama and Claire Danes is one of my favorite actress around. Damian Lewis and Morena Baccarin add some stars wattage for this series.
I knew that there's nothing much to complain about this episode, solid acting, solid story, but something just makes me wonder about how this series depict how to pray according to Muslim.
I don't know this is because the writer is lazy or simply ignorant. I mean, in this amazing era of connectivity around the world, some writers don't really know how Muslim really do their prayers.
Terra Nova (2011)
My Problem with this series
I just watched first episode of Terranova, and despite its hype I found it little off mark for several reasons.
First, special effect is not 'that' special. I mean this is cost so much, so I heard, and yet it felt cheap and not quite good.
Second, how in the world that still in the beginning, the whole terrain, water, and everything in between seems so fair and easy. It's like walking around tourist escapade.
Third, they come from 22nd century aren't they? No technology good enough to steer away those dinos but those weapons? And it seems to me those dinos just getting tickled every time they got shot at Well, it might lead to something better, who knows?
Episodes (2011)
Funny Funny Funny
Well, out of Friends former member's new ventures, I have to say that Episodes is the funniest...I watched this without too much expectation, I already watched Cougar Town and Sunshine Pilots so that's reasonable. Because those other shows is not funny-so-I-blurt-laugh-unconsciously kind of thing, smile yes, but laugh no...
This show is fresh air of comedy in TV shows that heavy in drama, horror, and police procedural. I also love Tamsin Greig and her counterpart (forget his name), they add certain quality of 'British' flavor that I really love.
Matt Le Blanc is funny and those writers from London is not lightweight comedian either. And the chemistry between three of them is palpable and hilarious, it's a rare feat for this kind of show. Hopefully this show will be catching a wind and growing huge because it really has great quality of comedy.
Highly recommended for good laugh and insight about how TV studio work...
The Lake House (2006)
She can't look more beautiful than this!
As a big Sandra Bullock fan, I can't believe it took me almost five years to watch this gem. And how can I be so stupid...
I won't tell about the premise or story, but I will tell you that Sandra never look more radiant, beautiful, and engaging in this film. Pairing with Keanu Reeves perhaps is the best thing she could ever do, this couple really own the screen and I believe in the next twenty or thirty years, they will be considered one of the most great couple on screen, albeit they just did two films together.
I will watch this again and again and I'm looking forward for her to do more films with Keanu Reeves.
Lovely film, don't try to analyze too much, this is fantasy after all...
Wicker Park (2004)
Instant favourite....
God, I don't know where to start...Actually it took me for a while to actually see this film.Well I always suck up to romantic film, especially that blend with comedy but this one is different, far out different.Serious yet offering mystery and gripping scene. I consider it will ended with murder at first, you know...but it turn out differently. This is funny because I read the reviews first and learned that this is the remake of L'Apartment, a french film, of course unseen by me...but this is great film whatsoever. I love every aspect of drama, deceive, and coincidence in it.Rose Byrne, Josh Hartnett, and Diane Kruger did a terrific acting.Diana Kruger seems very low key and I love it.We feel for them and of course Matt Lillard in very different mode turned his back slightly from comedy and lent his comic talent as this tragic bystander...And Coldplay song in the end, fit in just perfect....Love it
Ada Apa dengan Cinta? (2002)
nice treat...
Well, I only have a chance to watch this film on VCD because I don't have much courage to go to theatre and have to deal with those teenagers...Speaking about age, right?? This is absolutely the best Indonesian film on the last three years... I watched Pasir Berbisik with Dian Sastro on it as well, but I have to say that A2DC is far more better. Not pretentious to be 'art' film like Pasir Berbisik of course, but it is believable and somehow get me hooked into the story.... Dian Sastro should be ranked as Indonesia Sweetheart of this days...Not to compare with those beauty no-brain on sinetron (tv show) who just mumble through the whole episodes without much depth exploration...!!!
Kudos to all of the casts and crews...Yet, I don't know that Mang Diman has already passed away until I watched the last credit...*Sigh*
Return to Me (2000)
Simple yet luminous
Well, what more can I say, in the world of cynical films sometimes we miss simple and sincere ones. This film is a relief. David Duchovny is amazing, I mean for you X Files fans, he really can be sincere and funny. Eclipse his fame personality as jaded Fox Mulder. The chemistry with Minnie Driver worked and again what a relief this is. Love it and hopefully Bonnie Hunt will make something like that again. Kudos!!
Angel Eyes (2001)
Jennifer Lopez is something to watch for...
just watched this and I think it is nice romance film with some downbeat twist that worth to watch. This is my first Jennifer Lopez film that I've seen and I think she's outstanding. Jim Caviezel and Jennifer Lopez succeed to create this sweet chemistry even though this film not meant to be some smarmy romance film but still the sweetness appeared as well.... Hollywood, watch out for these two....or already?? :-)
While You Were Sleeping (1995)
Love it Love it Love it Love it....!!!
I remember the night I watched this film about 4 or 5 years ago and eventually I made my own review after that and I said that this will be on my all time list....Recently i rent it again and I know that I was wrong, I dont love it but I love love love love it multiply by 1000.LOL. Sandra Bullock is one of my favorite actress and this film confirmed that once and for all. The chemistry is great, the comedy is flawless, and Sandra is my dream kinda woman. The story is cliche but the warmth that it left behind is lingering forever. I will watch this again and again.... 10/10
French Kiss (1995)
meg ryan and kevin kline just irresistible!!
just watch this film and all i can say is how can someone not love Meg Ryan?? She's just in it...I mean she looks great in that short hair style and her warm funny personality. She did it better and better in every single film that require her to do such thing....Like Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail. Kevin Kline is kinda new to me, I watched Dave and this one so far but I agree that he's one of underrated actor out there. I dont know much about the autenthicity of his French accent but it sounds great to me. The scenery itself is great! Paris and vineyard somewhere in the heartland of French is amazing. I will buy it of course but not now, I will enjoy this again and again....
The Parent Trap (1998)
Lindsay Lohan is someone to watch for, she's hilarious.....
i rent this one just to spend my spare time but Parent Trap really dig me up (is it right expression??) but really....this film is one of the most hilarious family movie ever....Lindsay Lohan is great in her double role, she did it flawlessly. Just great. Rest of the casting is wonderful too....especially Natasha Richardson. I'd love her to be my mother or maybe my aunt.:-) 9/10
Miss Congeniality (2000)
Sandra rules.....!!
i always carry a soft spot on Sandra Bullock since her breakthrough on Speed and even though i know she's having tough times with her films after that i still love her. Miss Congeniality affirmed that one more time....she's funny, cute, wit, and just lovely, what can i say... the movie itself maybe seems dumb and silly but i laugh all the way through....Sandra Bullock, keep up the good work girl...!!i am waiting for your next project and hopefully it's Oscar-worthy.....
You've Got Mail (1998)
top notch and a little above Sleepless in Seattle
i watched this with little hope, just to pass the time but surprisingly this is very well romantic comedy, the chemistry is in right dosage. Meg Ryan is great in the ending, i think her expression will last long in my memory.....and a bit above successful Sleepless in Seattle i guess...
A League of Their Own (1992)
endearing and beautiful sport movie, home run!!!
i just watched this film (again) and i know, as far as i'm concern, this should be on my 'must-have' list....the whole minutes of it succeed to capture the spirit of baseball and of course the woman in it... great cast, and it always bring tears in my eyes everytime i watched Geena Davis and Lori Petty hugging in the end of World Series...and of course when the old character meet again...subtle and touching...
and i am a guy, you know what i mean....i love every moment of it, i love every cast in it, Penny Marshall should do some more like this, i hope so.... once again, home run!!!
Notting Hill (1999)
brilliantly funny and of course heartwarming....
so far I consider While You Were Sleeping is the most wonderful film in this light romantic genre but after I watched (again..) Notting Hill, i found this film gonna be toughest contender. I dont know why, but Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant is absolutely amazing, especially Grant....he has this simple charm that make you under his spell.... highly recommended though the plot predictable but still you can find nice surprises here and there.... Rhys Ifans is hilarious.....
Jerry Maguire (1996)
renee really deep and luminous....kudos!!
just watch Jerry Maguire recently and Renee Z absolutely amazing and makes me wonder how on earth i never consider her films before.... because of Jerry Maguire, i watch The Bachelor and Nurse Betty and it confirmed my adoration bout her.... the film itself is fun and i enjoy it immensely....
