Call me old fashioned but...
8 November 2022
I don't care what anyone thinks, I adore this movie made by the same producers who made two other movies with Juliet Mills Nurse on Wheels and Twice Round the Daffodils. Its a sweet story of an awkward school girl who manages to win the hearts of two very different men, but chooses the right one at the end. One of the two men is the handsome and very talented Michael Craig who I believe had a successful series in Australia. With Michael Redgrave as Tansy(Juliet Mills) Father and a personal favourite of mine Roger Livesey as Thomas(Michael Craig) father. To younger generations they may take offense to certain scenes, but to me its part and parcel of the story of a film made over 60 years ago. A joy that I am glad to own on DVD.

An English Actress playing the Irish Nun and the Irish Actress playing the English Nun.🤔
18 July 2021
I see some reviewers thought this adaptation of Rumer Godden's Black Narcissus was boring, I on the other hand thought it wasn't a bad version. I liked the way they drew out the tension with Sister Clodagh and Mr Dean and the atmosphere was eerie enough. The only let down was Sister Ruth I did not feel her obsession with Mr Dean was drawn out enough. There fore I was not convinced of her desire for him. Sad to think it was Diana Riggs last appearance. Will keep it on my record box to watch again.😉

Utter Crap
30 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Utter crap is the only way to describe this movie. The characters apart from Grabriel Byrnes character were all unlikeable. Bill Campbell being the worst i hated his character from the beginning and i never ceased to hate his character.Jean Butler came across as too easy and looked bored in some scenes. I know this movie is based on fact as i have seen documentaries on RTE about it, but please they did'nt even film it in Ireland. Of course being that your aiming at an international audience lets put some steretypical irishness into it like the 'Lets get the Irish Drunk so we can escape'.I thought really i did i was going to like this movie but i found myself rooting for the Irish soldiers and not for the prisoners who all acted like a bunch of spoiled children.I am not surprised in real life many Irish women landed up getting together with the German soldiers as the allies came across as idiots.

Donal Donnelly and how much i adore this movie.
20 January 2012
Having recently discovered this movie i have to say how much i adored it. And my personal reason is because of Donal Donnelly he may not have a big part in the story as he is more the observer of the absurd goings on. He to me is the most unforgettable of the characters. He is like a threat to the arrogant Tolen who treats women like dirt because unlike Colin he is'nt afraid to stand up to him. I love the quirkiness of the movie as i adore the quirkiness of A Hard days night this is similar in my opinion. Its amazing watching this the clothes that Tom wear are back in fashion the fact the actor was older then the other actors does not show considering how youthful looking he is. I love the art deco house the dragging the iron bed along the street scene the going in and out of the doors scene. In fact i can't say a bad thing against this movie you either love it or hate it i personally love it.

Maureen O'Hara this time with Paul Henreid.
13 June 2011
I really must say how much i enjoy this movie a great deal. It has the gorgeous Paul Henreid as the romantic hero and Beautiful Maureen O'Hara ( as two reviewers are clearly blind for one, in Hollywood of the 1940's women always looked older due to the amount of makeup and hairstyles they have and for the second, manly Jaw i have yet to see anything manly about Maureen O'Hara in any of her films. Rude just Rude.) I am now finished with my rant only to say how much i adore this movie and Walter Slezak as the baddie he always seemed to play in films of the 4o's.If Swashbuckle films of the 1930's and 1940's are your thing them make sure to check this out.

Love this new discovery.
12 June 2011
I only discovered this movie recently and was very excited to have found also it helped it has the gorgeous Cornel Wilde in it. Being Irish i also like Maureen O'Hara our one and only Hollywood legend of the golden days of Hollywood. Apart from 'The Queit Man' which i like but as an Irish person find it a tad patronizing of the stereotypical Irish of that age in Hollywood which unfortunately still exists to this day 'Leap Year' jumps to mind. Anyway enough said on that only to say that apart from John Wayne and John Payne. Maureen O'Hara has the same chemistry with Cornel Wilde and it comes through in this movie. Everything about this film had me hooked from the story to the shots of international and famous race courses. I recommend this to anyone who loves horses and a bit of romance inbetween.

Not as bad as made out to be.
1 May 2011
I noticed in a lot of the reviews people have a lot of problems with June Allyson being cast in the Claudette Colbert role of Ellie Andrews as i am a fan of both versions of the movies i have to say i have absolutely no problems with it what so ever. So what if her husband was the director.I liked the teaming of both of June Allyson and Jack Lemmon there chemistry was'nt that bad and the musical numbers were enchanting. June Allyson will always be a favourite of mine with her raspery voice and her charm that comes out a lot in her movies. And Jack Lemmon has that great likable factor like James Stewart. So don't think this movie as a remake but as an affectionate tribute.

A Deanna Durbin movie could never be ruined by singing.
3 August 2010
As a previous reviewer remarked regarding this fine film obviously has no knowledge of what a legend Deanna Durbin is with her singing voice she literally saved Universal studios from bankruptcy with her very first film at about the age of 14. With that first film Three Smart Girls she went on to have a very successful career till the age of about 27 when she retired and now lives happily in seclusion in France. Because of Him is the story of an ambitious waitress who dreams of being on the stage and with a little trickery on her side achieves her dream with the starring role of her first play much to the chagrin of the plays writer who thinks she is totally wrong for the part, but as with most of her films it comes right at the end.

Why I like this version
2 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I,m possibly the only person who has seen this film and really enjoyed it from the fabulous scenery of Salzburg and Munich to the romance of the story. As one reviewer commented it is an, and i never noticed it before how blind i am its so similar to Jane Eyre only with a slight difference she does,nt land up with Rochester at the end. June Allyson has always been one of my favourite actresses and she is reunited with her co star from the 1949 classic Little Women. I am familiar with othier notable films from director Douglas Sirk Written in the Wind and such and dream to put this one down. Im so happy i received a copy of this on DVD to cherish forever. Just One reviewers opinion of a favourite movie.

Coronation streets Betty as you have never seen her before.
23 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I came across this film late one night on T.V and decided to watch it as the announcer mentioned that Betty from Coronation street was in it. This got me curious as i had never seen her in anything else, she is about 19 in this musical comedy that also stars Jimmy O'Dea who as the star of the film plays the typical stereotype Irish man who travels to London to broadcast on the BBC he thinks he is going to be singing but a mix up by a secretary leads to some confusion as the BBC only want him to be on spelling programme. Betty plays a young woman who goes behind her domineering fathers back and wins a singing competition which leads her to a contract to appear on a radio show in London. Betty can actually sing and not badly at that she is also given a romantic interest in the film. All said its not the worst i have seen even if the Ireland scenes are a bit patronizing but thats typical of the period.

Delightful
11 March 2008
I am really enjoying this series and do not want it to end, I believe the BBC are commissioning another series thank god. At last something to enjoy and look forward to on a Sunday night. Julia Sawahla is excellent and i really feel for her character and i hope she will be in the next series as it won't be the same. I have preordered the series from amazon and and i cannot not wait to receive it, The acting from all involved is brilliant right down to Dawn French. The set is Magnificent it almost makes you want to go back in time, the costumes especially that of the Pratt sisters are magnificent i love the way they wear the same clothes nearly all the time. Excellent and Delightful show.

What has Sectarian trouble got to do with Falling For a Dancer
16 April 2007
I loved this mini series when it came out in 1998 here in Ireland, Liam Cunningham was brilliant as Mossie Sheehan and Elizabeth Dermot-Walsh was very good as Lizzie. This mini series had nothing to do with past troubles in Northern Ireland there are no politics and not much religion mentioned and i am sure that Ireland was not the only country in the world that looked down on women who got pregnant outside marriage so to suggest that we are still some backward country like it may have seemed fifty years ago like a reviewer from Australia who claimed to visit here when i would like to know is stupid. Getting Back to Falling for a Dancer if you like old fashion romance with tragedy mixed in this is definitely worth a look.

Silver Dream Classic
21 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I remember seeing this movie year's ago one night and loved it, i cried at the end could not believe he died and what a way to go. I've got it now on DVD with the original and alternative endings still the originals better after all you can only have so much of a good thing. I'm not a motorbike enthusiast but i can see why people can be influenced it almost makes you want to go out and ride motorbikes,David Essexs is brilliant as Freeman and Beau Bridges is good as the Villain but its the bike that steals the movie. The theme tune is very catchy and suits the movies opening sequence. I can't say enough about this movie sad as i maybe i love it.

The River
9 January 2007
I have just discovered this charming comedy from the 80's. I do not recall ever seeing it the first time around, but i'm glad that it came on DVD so i could discover it, David Essex is quite good and the chemistry between him and Katy Murphy is sweet. Its a pity the BBC did not commission any more as i believe it was quite popular,i also especially like the scheming Aunt and her determination to break the romance up between Davy and Sarah. The constant showing of the scenery and the nature makes us long for the summer. I am pleased i ordered this from amazon and feel i got my money's worth. I give it ten for pure enjoyment throughout the six episodes.

Odd Man Out
5 July 2006
This is a Brilliant film from an excellent director, James Mason is Superb as the IRA man on the run, I won't go in to the plot line as this has been mentioned in previous reviews i would just like to say this is one of my favorites of James Mason who i think was a brilliant actor and who deserved an Oscar for his portrayal of Johnny McQueen. James Mason was along with the director very brave to handle a subject like this at that time as the IRA was starting to become more active in Northern Ireland. I would also like to give a mention about Kathleen Ryan who played Johnny's girlfriend and gave a very moving performance. I gave this a 10 rating as it fully deserved it a must see.

The Pirate (1948)

The Pirate
2 July 2006
When i first saw this movie as a kid i absolutely loved it i own it now on video and it gets better with each viewing, the chemistry between Judy Garland and Gene Kelly is electrifying the pirate dance sequence is excellent along with the Mack the Black number, on some reviews people kept commenting about the paleness of the character as it being set in the Caribbean, well since it was made in the 1940's it was common to place white actors in such roles Jeanne Crain in Pinky. If people can look beyond this they would see a truly original film taking a poke at swashbuckling films of that period. I gave a 10 because i truly believe this film should be up there along with Meet me in St, Louis and Singing in the Rain. I hope they bring this out on DVD soon with lots of extras as my video is warring with over use.
