The English (2022)
Superb on all levels
I love this mini series and am obsessed with it. Cinematography is fabulous: Great Plains and all, some scene shots are so artistically designed and choreographed. Casting is perfect: abundance of talented known actors from the UK. Personally have discovered Chaske Spencer, whose presence, voice and acting are phenomenal! I of course knew Emily Blunt but this is her best role in my opinion ( she obviously believed in the project as she is an executive producer) and Rafe Spall is the ultimate villain, so realistic in his hideous acts and all the supporting cast are all great. Love the faces used, the close up from the camera on these characters. The music choice throughout is on point. From the opening credits, which have a touch from the 70s with a musical score that announces an epic story. Although not based on factual story per se, it is based on many historical facts and is very inspiring in showing how lawless and violent that period was. The many migrants that made the USA coming from all over Europe, their various accents displayed, the different Native American tribes surviving, the western diseases contributing to the chaos (and storyline in this case.
The ill luck of naive Trafford is sad and also likely to reflect the life of many early settlers.
The impossibility for Cornelia and Eli to ever end together is tragic and beautiful. Simply a stunning production and thank you to all involved. Entertainment at its highest level as far as I am concerned. Bravo.
Når støvet har lagt sig (2020)
Upsetting
Have not watched the whole series. Find it quite upsetting in the context of current trial in France after 2015 attacks in Paris. Good so far albeit harrowing watch as tragically this evokes a dramatic series of actual facts.
Hope Gap (2019)
Simple life story delivered with poetry & strong actors
Fact of life that people go through breakups, heartaches and all that ensues. Very subtle performance by Bill Nighy. Touching and endearing one by Josh O'Connor and Ms Bening masterful in her spite, denial and yet witty and lyrical approach. Beautiful film which we can all relate to whether directly affected or just wondering about commitment, happiness, loyalty and life in general. Superb!
The Apartment (1960)
Thank You BBC for programming this!
I had watched the Apartment some 35 years ago and i just remembered it was a good film. When I saw it was available on BBC iPlayer, I did not hesitate to re-visit it. Such a simply beautiful classic. So refreshingly funny and sensitive. Jack Lemmon is always great and is perfect in this role. Shirley McLaine is radiant, beautiful: a delight of a movie. Testimony of an era on so many levels. Billy Wilder has given us gems. I just hope younger generations get to watch these, even though they may not know the actors and it's black and white. 2020 and yes still watching you Mr Lemmon, Ms McLaine and Mr Wilder. Thank you.
