X-Men '97: Remember It (2024)
Best Marvel Cartoon Episode I've Ever Seen
The episode fools you with the love triangle and uber happy vibes and then (trying not to spoil it) brings on the most impressive ten minutes I've ever seen in a superhero cartoon. A great message came out of Gambit and Rogue's conversation. Never seen Gambit like this and it was incredibly impressive. Cyclops, Jean, Rogue, Magneto are now more multi-faceted than they've ever been. In the original X-men cartoon Wolverine was far and away the most fleshed out. With the new show, I am not so sure anymore. The other characters are now very strong and more than capable of carrying an episode. And carrying it well.
Do yourself a favor and watch this episode without any distractions.
The Last of Us (2023)
Too Good To Be True
The pilot was excellent. Introduced us to the main character Joel, where he came from, how the end of the world came to pass (very original idea), the motivation behind why Joel does what he does in every episode after, and it sets a great tone. The post-apocalyptic sets are top-notch. The main societal problem (outside of the epidemic) is not a new idea but it works for the most part. Some of the acting is superb, mostly from the guest stars (Nick Offerman is the best in my opinion), Pedro Pascal is good when he can keep his Texas accent, Bella Ramsey has one mode and doesn't do it all that well. Also, I love post-apocalyptic shows and movies, probably my most favorite genre.
Buuuuuuuuuut, the show went downhill for me after that. It was a slow decline until the episodes 7 and 8, then it fell off a cliff. Seriously, what the heck was up with episode 7? Man that was bizarre. Ellie's character is obnoxious with near zero redeemable qualities. She is constantly outwitting adults who have her dead to rights with the stupidest of escapes (sometimes killing multiple grown men without a gun in one sitting) that any person with half a brain could have prevented. Joel heals miraculously from a near deadly wound in seemingly minutes and turns into a stealthy assassin. Joel started out with a rooting resume but it has diminished with each episode. I mean what happened to creating likable characters? Heroes can have flaws but they must have redeemable qualities and values. Joel has lost most of his. Its so easy to see the heroes escape route or deus ex machine about to save them from a perilous situation. Because of that the suspension of disbelief goes right out the window.
All in all it's a shame. A shame the source material got this treatment. It had a lot of promise but like a lot of shows in the last 5 years they peter out within the first season or by season 2. Westworld and Raised By Wolves are two examples on HBO alone.
There Will Be Blood (2007)
Disturbingly Good
I just saw this movie and I have to say it was incredible. Daniel Day Lewis gives I think the best performance of his life. Better than My Left Foot. In my opinion one of the greatest performances of all time and definitely the best of this century so far. He fully embraced this role and completely transformed into the awful, despicable and just plain evil character that was Daniel Plainview. The score was so haunting and created such an eerie feeling that you knew some terrible things were to come. The direction was superb in the fact that you never lost that uncomfortable feeling when day lewis was on screen. Anderson created a world that embodied a man's ruthless pursuit of money, power and control of what he thought was rightfully his. The opening scene was great because you didn't get any sense of Plainview's true character. He seemed like a normal person who did a selfless thing in taking in the child of a dead man. I think this is where the score was so key because it prevented you from feeling calm or at ease with this man or his situation. I loved the progression of Plainview's character throughout the movie. He became more soulless and kept on getting glimpses of his true ruthless nature. The secondary characters were great as well. Dano as the evangelic preacher and Plainview's son did a fantastic job as well. I expect great things from Dano as he matures as an actor. You could just feel his cowardice every time he was near Day Lewis's character. I could go on and on about this movie it was fantastic. Very disturbing and not a movie you can just flop in the DVD player, but truly brilliant.
Fargo (1996)
Gripping and Great Satire
Fargo is one of the greatest films of the last 20 years. The story is very basic. A kidnapping case with a very dedicated detective. However, the intricacies of the story for example: A pregnant Woman detective, the husband masterminded the whole kidnapping and the unique setting of the mid-west make this film unique. Ethan Cohen did an incredible job of making the movie so brutal and cold. You can feel the dark tension while watching the kidnappers in the car as well as the cabin. All the performances were great but Frances McDormand and William H. Macy were the best. Frances McDormand performance was remarkable as the detective and deserved the academy award. She was the constant moral individual in a setting of immoral people. Macy's performance was equally impressive. One aspect of this movie that sets the haunting tone is the score which was was perfect for the movie. If you like drama's you will thoroughly enjoy this film.
Entourage (2004)
Comedy at its finest
This show is awesome, it truly combines everything that makes a great show. You have beautiful women on the show all the time, incredible writing (Larry Charles who wrote for Seinfeld writes for the show), great actors ( the best is Jeremy Pivan), great celebrity cameos (garey busey, james cameron, jessica alba and Bob saget), and outstanding directing. One of the best parts of this show is how they poke fun at a lot of the celebrities from the past and present. If you are looking for a hip show that combines todays pop culture and great comedic writing and timing you will enjoy this show. This is a show that everyone should be watching and everybody will be watching soon.
