Star Wars: Ewoks (1985–1987)
4/10
No wonder Anakin turned to the dark side

It's hard to rate something when you're clearly not the target audience but as someone who's on a mission to "complete Star Wars", I left this series to last.

As an adult, it's utterly painful. As a kid it may be entertaining enough I guess.

For those wondering, it adds absolutely nothing to the "The Star Wars story" but I don't believe that it was ever intended to. At least in Droids there were some (although not many) references to Star Wars. In Ewoks, there's absolutely none. None of the creatures, music, environment, music, nothing. At least the films had a little bit of Star Wars in them.

Ewoks: The Battle for Endor (1985 TV Movie)

One for toddlers and completionists

I'm currently in the process of trying to "complete Star Wars".

I honestly didn't enjoy it but I'm giving it 5* because it's very clearly a kids film and I'm obviously not the target audience. The Ewok is the only single Star Wars reference in the entire film so it's almost hard to even label this as part of the Star Wars franchise. It's almost as if it's an independent film in its own right (which would have been fine) and they just stuck the Star Wars name on it to boost viewing figures.

For a young audience, it's absolutely fine. The little girl who plays the main character is actually really good in her role so props to her.

For a 30 year old male however, this is a pretty hard watch.

Nothing could have ever prepared me for how bad this is

I feel like I'm missing something because I just don't get it at all. It feels like I'm missing something.

Even for those trying to be a Star Wars completionist like myself, this will really test your will to live. How they ever convinced the likes of Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher to be associated with this monstrosity, I'll never know.

Most of it is just the creepiest Wookiee's of your darkest nightmares screaming at each other without subtitles. Let's not even go into the wife watching the cooking channel with the four armed black faced actor dancing about.

... still better than the sequels.

The Book of Boba Fett (2021–2022)
9/10
Highly underrated

I really enjoyed this series, I honestly don't understand why it seemed to get so many negative reviews. It ties in really well between Seasons 2 and 3 of The Mandalorian. It's highly recommended that you watch this before Season 3 otherwise a lot of the story won't make sense (I made this mistake).

There's a lot of references to the original trilogy which offers a few nostalgic kicks.

The characters are awesome, especially Fennec Shand. She's almost my favourite part of the series, would love to see more of her character.

Really disappointed to hear that they're not doing a second season after the highly negative response from the audience. It's really frustrating that the Star Wars "fans" criticised it so heavily and now thanks to that, they're not making another series.

Nowhere near as bad as everyone's saying

4 episode's in...

I think this series is getting criticised a lot more than it deserves.

Firstly for perspective; I adore the LOTR trilogy, it's arguable the best sci-fi film series ever made.

Secondly I couldn't stand the Hobbit trilogy, I personally thought they were awful and it felt as though they were aiming at a much younger audience but whatever.

The ROP 4 episodes in; yes I admit it probably is a little slow but they are introducing a lot of brand new characters and there needs to be some sort of backstory before the inevitable all out war which is surely coming. There's a few nods to LOTR also with Isildur and a rather familiar looking "magic giant" who dresses in shaggy grey clothing. Make of that what you will.

It's a little darker and more gory than LOTR / The hobbit which I'm personally a fan of, we've seen blood and broken bones despite the violence / fight scenes being pretty minimal so far.

It's kind of obvious where the story is going where all of the sub-stories are going to intertwine as everyone comes together to fight off the orcs and Sauron.

I think that it's done a good job of catching the 'charm' that the LOTR trilogy had, especially with the hobbits as you do find yourself smirking at their mannerisms etc. But it's not overdone like the Hobbit series where the laughs felt really forced.

As I said, I'm four episode in and it does seem to be getting better each episode as well as the story begins to develop and your attachment with the characters begins to grow. I'm excited to watch the rest of the season.

PS: Galadriel is a bit of alright. I'm telling you now, if I was an elf 10,000 years ago... Jheeze.

What a surprise!
17 March 2022
I started watching this with low expectations. Generally these autobiographical music films tend to be below par but this was fantastic!

I grew up listening to NWA, Dre, Tupac etc. (yes I am a working class white male from the UK) so this film had a bit of a nostalgic feel to it.

The casting / acting / costumes are absolutely spot on. Eazy E's character in particular is a real stand out.

If you're into the music and like a dark gritty film, then give it a watch. You won't be disappointed.

Bel-Air (2022– )

Give it a chance
17 March 2022
I like it.

I grew up watching The Fresh Prince, I must have seen each episode 10+ times so I was really in two minds when this was announced. To be honest, I had really low expectations and re-makes are often below par but I was pleasantly surprised.

Firstly please don't go into this expecting a funny like-for-like remake of your favourite 90s sitcom. This isn't it and I think that's the reason for so many unfair 1* reviews.

It's a completely difference spin on a West Philly kid who moves out to Bel-Air etc. Etc. Etc. (you know the rest) set in modern times rather that the early 90s.

All of the characters are familiar, even some of the more obscure ones like Tray, Judge Robertson, Jackie etc. However, a lot of their characteristics and mannerisms are completely different. I won't go into detail but Hillary for example is very different from the character you know in the original. She's a strong independent character who's trying to build a social media following with her culinary skills. Whilst she still lives in the Pool House with an eye for fashion (which nods to the original), her whole 'story' is very different. This isn't a criticism, it's just something to be aware of.

It's dark and gritty but not over the top, it's easy to bin watch but when you do; view it as a show in its own right and don't compare it to the original.

I'm sure that if the character's names were different and it was promoted on Netflix, the ratings would be much more generous which I personally think that it deserves.
