Tenet (2020)
Huhhh???
I'm just...so....confused. What the hell just happened ??
One of my biggest issues with the film was its attempt to explain "tenet" (the mechanism by which things can go backwards in time). Unfortunately, I don't think it does a good job of doing that. And even if I went back to watch this film a second time and realized that Nolan did, on the contrary, explain it well, this mechanism is still just too damn confusing to begin with! In my opinion, it distracts from the story....and well... this leads to my next problem with the film....what's the story again? They have to save the world from World War 3? (DEEP sigh). I know I shouldn't try and compare this film to Chris Nolan's magnum opus (in my opinion), Inception, but it's hard not to. Even if the audience didn't understand how "inception" worked, they were still caught up in a story about a man doing everything he could to see his kids again, while also dealing with the death of his wife and his complicity in it. Great !
In TENET, there's nothing about the story that grapples the audience in any way. We don't know anything about these characters. We don't understand any personal motivations for "saving the world". Were it not for objects and people going backwards in time, this movie would be like every other heist film....and I'm sorry to say this (as a another big fan of Nolan), but not one of the great ones.
I still love you Nolan! And all of your work! Maybe in time I'll learn to appreciate TENET more, we'll see. But for now, I'm disappointed :/.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
I wish I knew more about chess to appreciate this. Good show!
I liked this! I'm always a fan of shows and movies that feature prodigies. I wanted the show to dig a little deeper into her traumatic past, though. It's her experiences with her mother during her childhood that fuel her drinking and smoking habits later on as a young adult. Though, not enough is shared about this experience. The most we get are short flashbacks. Aside from that, this show was worth the watch.
Bad Education (2019)
Solid Film
Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney are EXCELLENT, the cinematography is on point, and the story teaches a valuable lesson about the consequences of narcissism & deceit. Aside from some questions I have about the motivations of a single character.....for example, what drove Rachel, a student, to research so much about and ultimately uncover the school's history of embezzlement when it could have easily backfired?....... I enjoyed it. This is a solid film to watch while you're still quarantined (haha).
You (2018)
It was GREAT.....until the last four episodes of season 2
My thoughts? The last four episodes hurt my impression of the series (ESPECIALLY the last two episodes). At the end, I don't think it made any sense to have Love kill Delilah based on the story so far. Dear writers, I don't mind the choice you made, but if you're going to have Love kill Delilah, then do a better job of SETTING IT UP!
Also, why was Candance reduced to an ancillary character. Why?! We saw multiple flashbacks of her throughout season 1, and her dramatic return at the end was exciting for the audience; she served as, possibly, another formidable opponent to Joe (hopefully just as formidable as Peach had been before she was murdered) . But she sucked. In season two, she spends most of her time walking around with Forty, and the rest of her time making empty threats to Joe. Why was she reintroduced at all?! "To warn everyone" she says. Oh please. Oh, AND THEN SHE DIES?! Like what? If you're gonna have Candance killed, that's fine. But again, do a better job of SETTING IT UP!
The nail in the coffin was the final episode. Why would the story have Forty killed? He was an idiot for most of the season, not a threat. There was not enough of a build during the season to make us think he'd stand in Joe's way. In fact, the entire time, we were encouraged to believe they were becoming friends. Killing Forty was a lazy attempt to SHOCK fans .
Overall, season one was awesome, but season two felt very very rushed. I was not pleased with how it ended. Maybe in season 3, it can redeem itself. But tbh, idk about that. The final episode ends with him staring at his new neighbor saying, "hello there". But why?! He's found love! Wasn't that his goal all along?! What more does his character want?!
