Furia (2021)
A play on double morals
Just as a general disclamer, I am not a fan of shows that involve police, punishment and investigation. So my review might be a bit biased because of that. Still, I did find what the show was about, nazi groupings in Norway and police going undercover to investigate to be quite interesting.
This show has some good actors coming from other Norwegian shows, and some not so good ones. The main protagonist makes a very convincing performance and suits his role well, the other central characters also do a great job with the exception of the main female protagonist. She had been landing a lot of roles in Norwegian movies and tv in the last couple years after her performance on the well known Norwegian show «Exit» where she played a benzo popping alcoholic housewife. Still a role this demanding shows lot of flaws in her acting skills. Sure she is super beautiful with a nice smile and great body - and it is amazing she looks this good at 37. But tve fact that we love her as a woman, does not change the fact that she does better in less demanding parts in my opinion. Some things she handles well, and some she needs more training to do well. I suppose this is more of a problem with the people hiring her and not caring too much about polishing and perfecting the show - snd making changes like doing more takes or postponing when needed, since in Hollywood for example actors always get proper excercise and nutrition programs for months before a part and learn different fighting styles and choreographies before they start shooting anything at all and also have stuntmen around to learn from. I guess this is not the case in Norway. Not very noticable in season one but becomes quite obvious in season 2. By the way, does anyone have her number? This time I wont be ignored. Or yes I will, nevermind.
This show is like 2 completely different shows between seasons. The first season feels like a beginning to end story and season 2 is like a new show kinda. They could be viewed independently without any knowledge of the other and might even be better viewed that way and I would reccomend starting with season 2 actually, but keep in mind season 1 is much better.
The first season is a very Norwegian type small town show where it first seems like a normal country town but then starts showing its true nature as secrets are revealed. Quite exciting and interesting show. Would give this a 7/10.
The second season is more like a international type spy show that is very similar to the show «24» that involves the interplay between higher powers and different types of international agencies and fictional terrorist groups. It tries to keep up the excitement but they really made a bad choice being to ambitious and putting all their cards on actors that really does not handle the role well enough. The dialogue is lacking in synergistic counterparts wich just contributes more to the season feeling rushed. Of course it could have been done better but a lot of it just really makes no sense. I am failing to see exactly what the issue is. 24 is one of my favorite shows of all time but this one just didnt hit the mark for me this time. 4/10.
Combined it amounts to a 5/10.
Fallout (2024)
A poor mans Elder Scrolls
The same holds true for tv shows as is does for gaming. A post apocalyptic gun wielding wasteland is uninteresring, even if you throw a billion dollars and hollywood at it. Quality is hard to find and ambition seems to no longer exist in tv shows. As if gaming was a thing for losers. Maybe the actors and viewers are too young to have ever played the fallout games in order to appreciate how infintely better this would have been if these resources went in to creating a show around The elder scrolls Oblivion for example that is probably the best game of all time. The only thing good about fallout is that luck was a stat.
Mutated monster people - lame
Vampires and mages - cool
Make something better!
Blue Eye Samurai (2023)
Show to watch, not perfect but very good!
The story is quite typical to begin with, similar to many other japanese animes especially in the humor department, but draws from both cultures in being a tiny bit silly and also ironic at the same time since the main character always stays serious. Not much place for jokes in a world as cruel as the sword wielding samurai age in Japan, still makes it quite fun to watch from the get-go. The main character is very central and people seem to be quite drawn to her and her impressive skills with the blade as she holds much power in ability and determination to make a difference in the world around her as she is willing to "do what it takes" and by many great risks is inevitably destined for greatness if she survives every challenge.
It becomes clear as the story progresses that the show in its entirety is well written and seamlessly entertaining. Mulitple themes influence the story, mainly that of the main character being a half cast white lady and the only one different. This is portrayed with complete honesty and without censorship, which is great. Deviation from her peers separates her from the pack in such a way that she is not afraid to be different while still being born and raised by the same people and thus able to navigate the societies rules to her advantage without much love for the infrastructure that is to blame for the negative effects on her life. Gender roles and the strict hierarchy of the times are also relevant but more as a framework for the story and not so much as a neccessary basis for understanding. The effect of deep and dark traumatic experiences on the characters perspective on the world and how it has shaped her morality is reflected in her emotional responses and the choices that she makes throughout. Different settings are portrayed with style and well thought out underlying meanings that allows superior people to relate and understand the characters at a deeper level. Honor, pride and personal integrity among other things all contribute to the actions of each character. Everyone seems to be on their own mission and their personality and morals are strongly reflected in the choices they make. Every character arc in the story is there for a purpose, completely without fillers and intertwined with the rest of the plot.
The show apart from the script is very well done. Quite stylish and packed with cool fight scenes. The surround sound track is absolutely great and the music choices are hit or miss, but mostly fantastic in my opinion. The vibe of the show is similar to what you would see in other films that combine eastern and western culture like the Kill Bill movies and anime series like Afro Samurai. The show is also a tiny bit tainted by over use of suspense, dream-like scenes and artistic angling in some fights which takes away a bit from the climatic action scenes. So the show is far from perfect in that regard but then again, no show is perfect.
In conclusion: Yes, the show does have some minor imperfections, but it also has sword fighting and most importantly it is entertaining, intelligently written and has both nice visuals and a good surround track. Each episode leaves you wanting for more so expect to be watching this entire thing in one go. If the question is if you should watch it or not? Unless you really dont like the setting, its a simple choice to make. It wont be the best show you have ever seen but it is a very good adult anime in my opinion and absolutely worth your time, even if you dont usually watch anime.
Forever (2023)
Great movie!
No idea why this doesnt have more reviews, it is like an A-tier movie, better than most the other soccer movies out there! 8/10 - like queens gambit! :)
Its nothing that hasnt been done before, what differentiates it from others imo is in how genuine it is while still being entertaining. It pulls you in from the start and keeps you invested the entire time not wanting to take your eyes off the screen. This script and story could have gone in any direction but the way the movie captures the emotions of the story and how relatable and real the characters feel, I would say the overall presentation is exceptinally well done.
Reccomended to watch!
Ragnarok (2020)
Got much worse with time
After just having finished watching season 3 of this show, I do not feel like I have to check if it is the last season, because Im sure of it. This was so bad I have little words.
Season 1 was great. They did almost everything right, except who they cast to be the main part (which is kinda important). Being 6'1 200lbs and having blonde hair does not magically give you acting skills, because this guy is a pain to watch. And I think literally everyone on the show, even the cleaning lady that had a 1 episode part with a few lines is a much better actor than him. But even if he is bad, that did not ruin season 1, since it was so good and well made overall and he got carried by the rest of the cast. Tbh I think even someone like 50cent or myself could have played this part much better. You could ask yourself "what is a 48 year old black man that is not a native Norwegian speaker doing in this role?" Then at least you wouldn't have to sit and think about "omg this guy is such a bad actor" all the time. I think 50 could have even carried the end through in a much more dignified way. So for season 2, this is where it started going downhill. Bad writing choices, but the hype was so great that it was ok to watch and still was able to leave me in anticipation for season 3. And season 3, I really (!) struggled to watch and Im now just glad its over.
They could have done so much more with this show. They had it all, superpowers, mythology-built villains and anti-villains, great scenery in costumes and historical items that made it believable, the language and writing too was new and incredibly well done. I would have so much liked to see those things that this show is so badly missing since season one. Where is the killing each other and coming back and fight and doing research on ancient texts to do so. Or hiding things in a chamber that has existed for 800 years and flashbacks from every time they got close to death. Then it might have been believable but an immortal being should have much more substance and rigidity to the character like snapping each others necks just like that and waking up again and crazy romance and all things supernatural based on Nordic mythology that they all figured out in their lifespan. But instead they transitioned into more of a kid show type vibe that is bad and enforcing modern day morality that just feels wrong for this show. Im so sad to see just another show that does not try to be great or care about being good after the initial hype, even with its minor flaws from the beginning - I would gladly accept them. No risk; no reward, no pain no gain. Seems to me that now they just made the episodes, got the paycheck and then it doesnt matter how bad it is. Such a shame :/
To sum it up season 1: 8/10, season 2: 6/10, season 3: 2.5/10. So overall my vote is dropping from 8 to 4.
Watch season 1 and enjoy it, then just let it go. Season 2 if you are really bored. Avoid season 3 at all costs.
A Discovery of Witches (2018)
Season 1 and 2 is like night and day
The first season of this show was amazing. A world of vampires and witches with the most beautiful Teresa Palmer in the main role, and she does it well. Like other amazing performances she has done in the past, namely warm bodies and letter to the King. It did keep me in waiting for season 2, but it was also one of the biggest dissapointments I have seen in a show. Season 2 felt like one of the worst shows ever, and frankly made me uncomfortable and a ashamed to watch. I do believe Theresa Palmer deserves more, but at the same time looking at her real life choices her success is no longer part of my concern, but I would be happy to see a new protect coming from her but better options do exist almost anywhere you would look for season 2 and beyond of this show.
The Witcher (2019)
Started a masterpiece, and now just a very good and enjoyable show
I've always been in to swords, magic, vampires, elves etc. Ever since I was a kid and when it comes to tv shows, it's my favorite genre. With the terrible delivery we got for the anticipated lotr show last year and with the game of thrones prequel still running but with the limitations of the GoT universe - this is the third high budget big fantasy tv show that is on tv at the moment - and it's good.
The Witcher world is full of magic and monsters and it seems everything is possible. This story also has 1-3 main characters that we learn to love over time by hearing about their story and how they came to be. This makes a group of main characters that we care about and cheer for. They are all unique, clever and powerful.
The directing and writing is very good, especially in the first season. I was really feeling like it was incredibly well made some episodes in season one and have not seen anything like it. It continues as it should in season 2 and 3 but here it's more of a ongoing story that continues to develop the not single episodes of grand events to shape the world. I found it to be very enjoyable to watch even if there were some a bit overly scary moments in there.
The cgi and the fighting scenes are very good too, especially the use of magic I would say and also the swordfighting and acrobatics are cool to watch.
Overall this is becoming one of my favorite shows in my adult age, I haven't read the books but I've played the games and I would say I enjoy the show more. To anyone that is a gamer or that likes fantasy shows this is a no-brainer, watch it asap. To anyone that doesn't, I would give it a chance, you might be amazed.
Passengers (2016)
One of the good ones
I just rewatched this movie for the third time and I have to say it's just so good. Sure, it only has a few actors on screen but they are like the best actors you could have found for each role, they fit the script perfectly and they all made such great performances it's simply on another level from most movies you see today. Pair that with great directing and special effects + good writing (might be a couple things in there that's a little bit dumb, but ok) and screenplay and you have a movie that is exciting and entertaining to watch the entire time. You can really relate to every characters emotions. It's one of my favorites and not just because Jennifer Lawrence is in it, there are other reasons for it too.
Silo (2023)
Went downhill fast
First few episodes were great, seemed like something kinda new, Morten Tyldum too being a great director when hes got good content to work with but this turned into a suspenseful & stagnant too slow kind of low standard cop story with a wierd type of exposition. I dont feel like that is what I signed up for during the first couple of episodes. I do want to believe it might get good again at a later time but if there's one thing I've learned watching movies and tv shows all my life is that if a show gets in to a bad and boring vibe it rarely picks back up again, but I will give it a decent grade for an admirable attempt of a good sci-if type post-apocalypse show, which is a little bit what we needed right now.
Assassin's Creed (2016)
Surffers from bad casting choices and bad screenplay and directing.
This movie had some hype from before as it is a popular game seriea and should be such and easy movie to make entertaining/watchable. But mistakes have been made.
First of all, I don't understand why anyone would ever cast Michael Fassbender into any role. He is a straight up terrible actor and should never be seen with the likes of Jeremy Irons, Michael K. Williams.and Matias Varela, all capable of making amazing performances. Many video game movies have done the same mistake; namely Max Payne, Hitman etc.
Watching this movie really annoyed me, the bad looks of the scenes and completely unnecessary use of long periods of suspense where nothing is happening really pissed me off and that combined with bad music choices etc. Makes me think he just does not have an eye for what look good.
Within the realm of an overwhelming number of high budget movies and tv shows, there is a huge difference in quality. And this one, this one is all bad!
Bruised (2020)
This movie is terrible
Ive been on this site for many years but not until now have I wanted to comment on how bad a movie is. I've always liked Halle Berry as an actor and I basically grew up on Swordfish, but on this one she should have probably read the script first.
There might be some spoilers in here but as a warning, the kid she has to take care of that's in like 80% of the scenes has selective mutism and does not speak at all the entire movie, hes just staring at them and it annoyed me a lot throughout.
The fight scenes are decent and realistic but I kinda wish the weren't, she's supposed to be a UFC level fighter but looks like she just started doing MMA, they should have made it look like she was picking way more of a punch.
And last of all the script is just so bad and full of stupid plot decisions that I can not recommend this movie to anyone. Time better spend watching pretty much anything else.
Legacies (2018)
What a shame
This show legitimately sucks. I could make something better with "pretty people" on my mobile cam. Amateur hour, and they got rick too. I used to love the vampire diaries and the Originals. This show is waaaaaaay below in terms of entertainment value ("monsters with really bad cgi") dude just dont watch it, its for kids, not even teens.
