Grand Theft Auto III (2001)
The most fun I've had in the past 12 months...
This is, quite simply, the finest game I've played in all my years of gaming. "GTA3" takes all the best parts of a good gangster movie (mafia ties, betrayal, endless bloodshed) adds a lot of humor elements, mixes it all with great sound and graphics, and slaps it all in the best PS2 game available. "GTA3" is an extremly engrossing game that seemingly never gets tiring. When the missions get too hard or repetitive, just drive around the city, assault pedestrians, or carjack a taxi, police car, fire truck, or ambulance and pick up people in need (or pick off people who need taken out) to make a little extra cash. Try to find all the hidden packages or complete all the insane movie style jumps (complete with slow-motion camera work), or just listen to the wacked out DJs on the nine (count 'em, nine!) different radio stations, ranging from techno to rap to commercial pop to my favorite station, Chatterbox 109 Talk Radio, a hilarious call-in show that takes the worst Liberty City has to offer and lets them air thier very dirty laundry to Lazlow, the most aggitated talk radio host since Fraiser. All in all, if you need a fix of pure adreneline and are not weak of heart, pick up "Grand Theft Auto III" for a killer good time.
On "A.P. Weaver's Suck-O-Meter", "Grand Theft Auto III" ranks 4/4:
"No Suck Whatsoever"
Darkman II: The Return of Durant (1995)
Darkest point of the Darkman Trilogy
This film, produced by Sam Raimi but directed by Bradford May, is my least favorite film of this otherwise fine film series. Arnold Vosloo takes over the reigns of Westlake/Darkman from Liam Neeson and, while trying his darndest, just isn't as good as Neeson was. It's like replacing Peter O'Toole in a sequel of "Lawrence of Arabia" with Charlie Sheen. Larry Drake is really unnessesary(sic) as Durant. The writers should have moved on with a new villian for this film. Kim Delaney is underused and is killed half way through the movie. The only actor who I thought was any good Renee O'Connor. She played vulnerable and tough in a role that helped her land on "Xena" (Raimi cast her in this role after a bit part on "Hercules", than Robert Tapert & Raimi cast her on "Xena"). All in all, this film is poorly written (two other writers wrote "Darkman III", which is much better) and it seems that May points the camera to scantily clad women more than the main characters. Rent this if you need a quick thrill or a fan of the actors.
