Millions (2004)
5/10
Overrated and rather dull.
15 October 2008
Its hard to tell what this film is trying to be or trying to achieve.

After seeing Boyle's most famous titles, I was expecting a rather deep, gritty look at how money can affect the life of a child in england, and those who surround him. Instead we are subjected to poorly acted, childish nonsense with religious undertones. I may well have shown this to a child, but the religious aspect puts me right off.

I find child actors are sometimes very hard to take seriously and in this case they aren't too bad, but after seeing 'This Is England', it seems almost animated and forced. Even the adults in this film didn't really convince me, so I began to think that maybe this was a scriptwriters problem which does take some blame off the actors/actresses. Boyle's direction is very good I'll admit, and there is some great camera work here.

Also, the darker side to this picture is not very dark, and fails to make an impression, although it may do to a younger audience.

All in all a weak film hence my rating of 5/10.

Severance (2006)
9/10
Highly entertaining and gripping.
24 April 2007
I saw Severance last night after having planned to watch it for some time. I have to say that it was really quite brilliant in every respect. Great direction, location, actors/actresses, story, just about everything you need for a truly great film.

I took it into the office to watch with the lads from work and they all said it was highly entertaining and gripping. If I had to point out a (very small) fault, it would have to be the strange mix of horror/comedy. Although original in it's own way, you are sometimes left wondering whether to laugh or cry, but this does not affect the overall film, in fact, it probably adds to it.

If you are a fan of horror/violence mixed in with some coarse humour (think Shaun of the Dead), then this movie is for you! Danny Dyer has some excellent one-liners and the other characters have been cast perfectly. Its also British for a change! :) Go rent or buy Severance now!

Madagascar (2005)
3/10
Visually fantastic, otherwise poor...4/10
1 August 2005
Having a degree in the subject of animated computer graphics, I really enjoyed the visual style of this film, but I can heavily sense the predictable framework that runs through every other element of this entire feature. :o( It has all the smelly trademarks of a 'fun, kids' animation. The characters are copied stereotypes from other CG classics such as 'Shrek' (donkey) and 'Ice Age'. The slow, long scenes and thin storyline (what little there is of it) fail to enthral you.

The trailer for Ice Age 2 was showing just before Madagascar and I personally enjoyed its character and story a lot more than Madagascar itself! See the amazing visuals at a mates house on DVD. Otherwise don't waste your money in the cinema.

Vampire Clan (2002)
8/10
Some hidden talent, mediocre film.
8 September 2004
This title has some strong points and hides some real talent underneath the weak characters. It is one of the better contemporary teen horror films, compared to others of the the same genre (crocodile etc..). As a whole, it forms a mediocre film, with some half believable characters. I did find myself waiting for a huge twist at the end but it never came. This did not ruin it for me though, as the film is more a documentary than a work of pure fiction.

I would like to see more of Drew Fuller, i though he pulled of the psycho teenager perfectly.

This film could safely be watched in your spare time ;o)

Big Fish (2003)

Don't Believe The Trailer!
13 February 2004
When I watched the trailer for this film, I was made to believe that it would be a 'magical masterpiece' and uphold Tim Burton's strange fantasy theme, along with many claims it would win however many BAFTAs etc. I decided to spend my money on it and entered the cinema with medium expectations.

For the next one and a half hours, I was presented with a FAR to literal, non-magical, emotionally inept, cliched interpretation of a jumped up love story. Ok, there were 'some' classic Burton pieces in the film, but it really didn't hold it together for me.

I thought the casting had been done by a Big Fish, everyone was terrible and I felt as though they had been chosen for the role as there was no one else available at the time.

Big Flop
