Oppenheimer (I) (2023)

Could be better but watch this podcast to understand more - worth watching to learn some history though
2 August 2023
I was glad I had listened to the two Rest is History podcasts about Oppenheimer in advance but still struggled to follow all the characters and timescales of the post war events.

I found the love scenes unnecessarily using nudity - absolutely cringeworthy and maybe men will like that bit but embarrassing or what !! Also maybe men love those sexual positions but do women ! Fed up with this influencing poor younger girls watching that.

It is definitely a period of history that we should know about and certainly it is still relevant sadly.

I felt the Big Short did better at explaining a complicated idea.

Certainly this film would have required a different style to do that but I think they could have thought of something.

I found the sound quality a little tricky and missed a few words.

I think I need subtitles!! I'm now used to that in my online viewing !

Good film - historical
21 September 2020
This is a good film. based on a true story so that is interesting. But told with humour. Interesting to see the fashions of the era too. And has shocking links then to what is happening today.

Very good film - taps exactly into what it feels like to be a girl of this age
21 September 2020
Good film. Great acting. You feel you are watching real life. The main girl in the film is a fabulous actor but actually all the characters are. Its a directorial debut and I think she has hit on exactly on the experience of being a girl of this age. In a new school etc. The ending is good too but I wont say more for avoidance of any spoilers !

Give it a watch. Ignore the controversy as it's no worse than what is happening in life anyway and it shows how the girls deal with all this.

Great film - please give it a try.

If watching with kids - don't - check the content first
12 November 2017
I was recommended this in HMV - and thought the story sounded just the thing to watch with my teenager as sort of attempt at all watching something. I forget now the details as it was a few months ago but there is unnecessary rude content - not nice at all. And the story is boring too ! Sounds good but its not - I do not understand the rating !

Cant really add much to ecastrodesign's review
12 November 2017
I enjoyed the film as it was a night out. It didn't quite meet my expectations but then again I had heard mixed reviews. I guess what it lacked was just that feeling of atmosphere in the carriage. Did we particularly see an evening on board with a meal served ? As they said we didn't really get to know the characters terribly well beyond a few caricatures. I got a little mixed up with the Johnny Depp character and another man who looked quite similar. But overall a good story-go and see it - Kenneth Branagh was good but the moustache was over the top !! And the mix of French (with a translation which I guess you had to do but as I speak French this seemed ridiculous !!) as he spoke a few words of French so we know he is Belgian then into English ! But overall I enjoyed it. Go and see it - its a good film and I hope to see more as I love Agatha Christie and all mystery things like this. I hate CGI but can see it probably saves a whole lot of money in a film like this. Thanks all though - enjoyed the film.

Very Good Series
1 February 2017
Very Good Series This is well worth watching and is continually exciting onward moving story. Its in Dutch but with subtitles its fine to watch. Give it a try - its currently on Walter Presents on Channel 4 online if you read this while its still there. I only gave it 9 as I probably reserve 10 for West Wing !! But Framed is well worth a watch ! Lots of scene changes. Its dramatic. There is some violence so if you are not into that don't watch it. If you are into technical things such as computers you will like this but don't worry if you are not as you will still keep up ! I hope they make some more of these series with the main characters as I like them.

Not sure about this one
1 December 2016
I had expected to really like this film but overall I didn't enjoy it. There were some moments I enjoyed and I liked the couple who visit the main characters. But the whole thing is slightly strange and does not quite add up to me. For example the hotel staff member who observes the family yet does little else. The family themselves - they seem to have no fun and the kids never once object to this slightly tiring ski holiday with terrifying avalanche etc. I felt very sorry for the little boy in the family ! I guess that is the point - the father is patriarchal at the beginning of the film.

But it sort of left me cold and definitely puts you off a ski holiday in such an alpine resort with cold large hotels and horrible roads etc etc .... I didn't really get this film at all. I would not recommend it.

Some good points - some not so good - good film but prefer the book !
21 December 2012
I read The Hobbit again before going to the film and I can say that I probably prefer the book but i did enjoy seeing how they had made the film. I enjoyed the parts of the film which actually showed the action from the book. Some of the computer graphics in the film were a little ridiculous, particularly in the parts which strayed from the book.

I didn't like the regional accents of the dwarfs. UK regional ! I picked up Scottish, Cockney and Irish, north of England and no doubt others too ! I think they should have had an entirely original "Middle earthish" accent - they also seemed to be just a little more unpleasant than the dwarfs in the book ! I would like the dwarfs to have dressed a little more like they do in the book. Although I do seem to think perhaps Tolkien did have some characters who had a London accent...

I also would prefer not to have seen the three head butts that feature in the film - not good for children to see. They may even encourage people to think that is a sensible way to fight which is immensely dangerous.

And finally, there were at least three scenes of computer generated extensive scenery where the sheer extent of the computer graphics were just way beyond what was at all likely - OK great it fills the whole large screen but was at least 33% more than was at all necessary. And we also noticed that very very intermittently we suddenly got a fantastic burst of surround sound - but just in very sporadic bursts...Why not all through the film ? why so sporadic ?

But apart from that I did enjoy the film . I wondered whether it was better to have read the book or not to then watch the film - probably evens either way. In some ways the film did actually enhance the book by explaining the story a little better than I had picked up from the book.

However, yes do go and see it. It might just have a few scenes which are a bit too much for younger viewers e.g. 6 or 8 and under, depending on how squeamish they are. And perhaps it might also not hold their attention - there were a few younger audience members who were a little restless in the first half of the film.

Also, one other thing was the dialogue was not very clever. In the book the dialogue is quite clever - but if you are going to stretch it to three films, you maybe need to get some good screen writers in so that you can write some clever scenes rather than relying on computer animation and graphics which I find over the top.

Also the bits where translations were added to the screen were in some instances farcical.

However enjoy the film !!
