The Twilight Zone (2019)
Season 2 is much better so far
Season 1 was really awful and the messages were not subtle but mostly a punch in the face with concrete pillars, as opposed to the original Twilight Zone series. Season 2 is better but still some episodes are hit or miss like in black mirror. My suggestion: Skip season 1 entirely and watch season 2 instead
Utopia (2020)
Where is Jessica Hyde?
I saw the British original, but I was very happy that there is a remake in the works, especially because the original abruptly ended on a cliffhanger after season 2.
I see that some parts of the story as well as characters were changed. So far this works most of the time with one exception being the "new" Jessica Hyde. She is so unlikeable I can't understand why they made her this way. In the original she was a bit quirky, but likeable, while here she is just evil and makes irrational, unnecessary choices. I see an improvement in Thomas Christie, he is more realistic/adapted to modern times and contributes better to the plot as well as his company which does not just consist of a wood-paneled room.
I give it a 7 so far and am looking forward to season 2 and 3.
The Boys (2019)
Not your typical superhero movie
I must admit, I really can't stand most of the superhero movies with way to many characters, instalments and reissues. That's the reason I got into the series so late. I just thought this is Amazons answer to The Avengers, but got interested when I noticed the unusual high IMDB rating.
During the first episode I knew this would be a good series to watch.
It has got criticism of a corrupt society, corporate, politics and the mainstream and apart from being eye candy in 4K HDR it really gets you thinking. For me a good series needs to stimulate me intellectually to be interesting and not only consist of pointless action and that's exactly where The Boys scores.
Dark (2017)
Masterpiece from Germany
Finished season 3 today and it was a worthy finish of the series. Everything is connected and a part of the bigger picture. Only in the end you will understand it and that's what makes it so intriguing. I can't recally any series that left me that puzzled until the end.
Into the Night (2020)
Better than expected
I must admit that I did not want to watch the series as the (german Netflix) description sounded incredible boring and there wasn't an IMDB rating at that time, but a friend persuaded me.
The (english) IMDB description reveals more details and I would have thought better about it if I had read it before watching.
"Passengers and crew of a hijacked plane have to outwit the day-night cycle. An enigmatic cosmic event plunges the world below into chaos"
So I came into the series with low expectations and a critical view. There are lots of flaws that were an insult to my intelligence and lead to lots of "as if" moments, e.g. someone enters the plane with a rifle and what does the pilot do - he comes out of the cockpit.
Later in the series I overcame this and ignored it, as that's more or less to keep the story in line. The really interesting aspect of the series are the different characters and how they deal with the unusual situation. Because of the situation the preferences have to change and one sees a critical view on a micro-society that is subject to changes.
I am pleasantly surprised that the series turned out better than I expected, so it gets a 7/10. I expect it to get a second season as it ends on a cliffhanger.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Watch the movie for what it is, not for what you expect it to be
First: If you expect this movie to be "a Tarantino" movie, to be full of action or anything, please just don't watch it, you won't get it.
I watched the movie without expecting anything and also without any knowledge about the Manson murders and really like it. As you probably know "Once upon a Time..." is how fairy tales begin, not action movies or how I like it to say - movies to be enjoyed, not consumed. This is a fairy tale taking you back in time, where one had a laissez-faire style of life, everything was a bit slower and Classical Hollywood Cinema was made. Nowadays everything has to be fast and full of action or you can't satisfy the average joe who needs to consume movies to get a break from work. Most of the movies produced over the last few years aren't worth watching as they are just another superhero reboot, loaded with action or another pointless comedy without any deeper meaning, without hidden messages, without something that let's you think about the movie or a concept of it in general. That's sad and also why most of the people don't get this movie and give it a bad rating. If you like Tarantino solely for Action and Bloody movies, then you don't understand his life's work and why it is so brilliant with all it's facets, unique camera angles, hidden meaning, social criticism, ...
p.s. Maybe it's worth mentioning that I'm just 23 years old and still think like this without even being able to see pre 2000 movies at their release.
