Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)
Not like the book...but not bad either...
Ok first of all I did read the books...I also know this is technically a fan-fiction of Twilight...so that needs to be kept in mind. I feel like so many people are quick to judge but I think that is simply due to a lack of understanding. It's important to realize that there are many styles of Dom/sub relationships. Some are purely sexual and keep the power play to the bedroom only; some are non-sexual, focusing on control in other areas of life; and some are a mixture of both. I will point out that based on what I read in the books and what is a little bit shown in the movie, Christian prefers the latter, he's a Dom in all aspects of his life. That is until he builds his relationship with Ana (but I won't spoil the other movies).
Tell me I am wrong, we've all had some fantasy of being swept off our feet by some out of this world persona that just seems to show up when we least expect it. That's what Christian does for Ana. I know when I was reading these books (at the gym by the way) I kept getting all kinds of ideas about the men just lifting weights.
We all have fantasies and if we act on them it's between those people engaging in them. No one else's business. I also think that Christian likes Ana's naïveté because then he can mold her to be the ideal sub. But again let's be real, how many of us have lost their virginity to another virgin? I am sure it's prob 50/50, for me I didn't, the person I was with the first time showed me what he liked so it's not like he manipulated me it was like he taught me and eventually I learned and wanted to try my own stuff. It's all about learning and growing and I think that's what Christian and Ana are doing in THEIR OWN WAY.
That being said I hate that Jamie Dornan couldn't keep his accent for this role (I loved loved him in Once Upon a Time even though he wasn't in many episodes). I don't think he did a bad job but I'll be honest he is not who I was envisioning when I read the books...more tall dark vibes but that is just me haha.
I think Dakota Johnson did well, she really brought the mousey presence that Ana has in the book. But as the story goes on you can see how she does have a backbone and does stand up for herself. Ana is a character who has a curious mind and has an idea of romance in her head most likely curated from her English Lit classics. I can see why she was intrigued by this mysterious stranger.
This is a dark romance, between someone with psychological baggage and someone who is at her core a hopeless romantic. If you read the books or if you kept up with any of the buzz surrounding the books and ultimately movies, you knew this was going to have sex in it and kinky sex at that...I am tired of people acting surprised and saying it's disgraceful or disgusting...because you knew what you were getting into and why you were watching. Just saying.
It's important to remember that this is fantasy, and fantasy can be fun. It can be fun to bring fantasy to life too, but you just have to make sure everyone is safe when playing and rules and roles are defined. Keep all that in mind and everyone will have a good time.
A Bad Moms Christmas (2017)
Light hearted Christmas Silliness
I thought the movie was great. My husband started to watch it and I wasn't even planning to watch, but when I heard the first joke I had to stay and watch.
I will say yes there are a lot of F-bombs and so what? If that offends you, don't watch...if crude humor offends you don't watch...if you prefer women to be polite and "lady-like" don't watch it!
I like this "threesome" they are more like real women...yes my friends and I talk about our relationships, sex and make naughty jokes and laugh at each other and it's great...I prefer movies with "real" women. I could relate to all 3 of the main women...I always go over the top at Christmas and want it to be perfect and this year I kind of decided to be "mellow" and part of me feels guilty about it...so I get it...and this movie made me smile, laugh out loud and feel better about me! And you know what? I like that.
WandaVision (2021)
Excited to see what's to come...
First I have to say, I had no idea what this show was going to be about other than the title characters. My husband and I watch basically everything that comes from the MCU so of course we watched the first 3 episodes all at once. I giggled at the many corny silly double entendres which provided levity during my moments of trying to understand what's going on.
I will say I do love the homage to classic TV. As a kid I would watch I Love Lucy, I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched and the Brady Bunch on Nick at Nite (yea this was before tv land haha)...so it's fun to see a modern take on those classics.
Clearly there is something bigger going on and I can't wait to find out what it will be. I plan to keep watching!
Family Guy: Quagmire's Dad (2010)
Hmmmm...something to think about.
Putting the crude offensive ignorant jokes aside...I think this episode does shed a little light on the family's perspective of a transgendered individual. I like what Ida said to Glenn "I had the advantage of thinking about this for years. For me it was easy: Do I want to be happy the rest of my life or miserable?" Yes it's an oversimplification, but it has some truth, those who are transgendered have had their whole lives to adjust to their feelings.
The part that gets me is how the commentary is always about the struggle of the trans person, you rarely hear about their family. So I think this episode gave a bit of insight into that part of it - especially from a son's perspective of a father transitioning to a woman. For a boy, you look to your father to teach you to "be a man" so I can't imagine it is easy to see someone you looked to in order to shape your own gender and life, go through gender reassignment surgery. It would definitely throw me into a bit of a tailspin.
I do like that in the end you can see that Quagmire and his father/now Ida have a pretty solid relationship because they were able to forgive each other after their fight and Quagmire was able to be supportive of Ida.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Mac Finds His Pride (2018)
Just wow....
I love Sunny it always has me laughing...I can have it playing all day, and just laugh all day long. But this episode has probably become one of my most favorites. As someone who isn't always understood, I feel like it spoke to me...I know this episode was geared towards the LGBT audience but I think it can resonate with anyone who has faced adversity and those who have felt they don't fit.
I was speechless, my husband was sleeping next to me as I watched and I just wanted to wake him up to watch Mac's remarkable dance. The performance filled me with so much emotion I couldn't stop smiling and wanted to cry all at the same time. I've never been good at expressing my feelings out loud so seeing someone express it with dance was one of the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.
Bottomline - yea this episode isn't like the others but it's special and beautiful and needed. It should be watched not just because of the story but for the beauty. It stands out and that's just fine, the best things always do!
