The Lovely Bones (2009)
The Lovely abstract
When you see the commercial for the film, the lovely bones, based on Alice Sebold's novel, you think it will be a tense ride about a family grieving over the murder/disappearance of their daughter.
While that is a lot of what you will see, it is only a mere fraction of what the film entails. The film is a mix of comedy/drama/tragedy and even elements of a thriller.
The film cannot be defined by one genre and with good reason. Every frame of the film is wonderfully executed by Peter Jackson's keen eye for detail.
It's hard to really describe the experience one meets when watching this film, it has so many emotions and feelings that it would be near impossible to sum up....
Except for amazing. While fans of the novel will be disheartened that a lot of it did not make it into the film, the film manages to quickly capture the essence of the novel without feeling choppy or as if something is missing, despite a lot being gone.
The actors and actresses are all perfectly cast and each of them give strong performances worthy of academy recognition. The lead, is amazing. Versatile and always radiating on screen.
While I must say some of the lousy CGI does tear the film down a few notches. The surreal environments and the atmosphere more than makes up for it.
The world of limbo, according to Susie, is quite thrilling and always unexpected, and it's equally wonderful.
The bad reviews of this film are incredibly unwarranted, it was one of THE best films I have seen recently and cannot wait to put this in my DVD collection.
Susan Sarandon is wonderful in her limited but present role and Stanley Tucci manages to be a despicable scoundrel. The actress, whose name slips my brain atm, who plays Lindsay Salmon, is amazing. The scenes of her investigating and trying to be sneaky are very tense and a thrilling chase catapults the film where you want it to go.
While the film is not wrapped up in a neat and tidy bow at the end, it gets it's message across and it leaves you feeling like it had a happy ending, despite the film's contents.
There are no bare bones here folks, just lovely ones:)
Life Blood (2009)
Five stars just for an original plot.
This film is an example of how independent film is unafraid to take an original and interesting plot and put it to use.
Notice, I never said, good use? Well that's because here it wasn't put to good use.
Rhea and Brooke are two lesbians on their way, somewhere which is never explained, after an incident at a swinging sixties new years eve party. The incident is committed by Brooke and is something that leaves Rhea on a heightened edge of panic. The lord comes down to Rhea and informs her she is a chosen one, an angel, sent to protect the world from true evil, by killing to survive.
There is the original plot. And the film gets dumber and dumber after that. The plot is weakened to the point of nonexistance as the film progresses with the murders on screen unimpressive and bland.
There is nothing to keep the viewer guessing or on the edge of their seat as the ending is so obvious from the second they transform that you could beat someone over the head with it.
The worst part is you couldn't care less what happens to either character. Despite Anya and Sophie's mediocre performances the film still stalls at boring and a snoozefest to those watching.
I would not recommend watching this film unless you are a fan of any of the actor's involved as it is a very horrible film. I also know fans of actors are willing to sit through much worse to see their favorite stars on screen. This is one of those films! Very disappointing film.
Post Grad (2009)
Indie film with mainstream comedy vibes
Now i'm not going to say this film was a classic or something you will want to watch over and over. What I can say about this film is that it was very surprising and offbeat despite the way the film was promoted.
Bandslam promoting take 2. Like the film Bandslam headlined by Disney stars, this film suffers from a lack of realistic advertising. Basically the film you think your going to see, you aren't. Bandslam was not a Disney film so much as a quirky teen comedy about diversity and the unification of those otherwise lone wolves for a greater cause.
Post Grad is essentially a film about a girl, Alexis Bledel, whose ideas of life post grad come crashing down around her when she realizes it isn't as she assumed it would be. Finding a job is much tougher then expected, and it doesn't help that she is unqualified, but over confident.
The film delves a little deeper with a lot of little subplots ranging from cute to over the top and strange, grandmother shopping for her own coffin.
The film was pretty offbeat and not as mainstream slapstick as it comes off in the trailers. It is a semi realistic film and Alexis does the best I have seen her do since Season one of Gilmore Girls. While she isn't Meryl Streep she plays the role of Ryden with great presence.
I thoroughly enjoyed the film and think that if it had better promoting and was targeted also at indie film fans, this film had the potential to be a hit.
Jane Lynch is also really great in the film, serving her character dutifully. Overall I was surprised and enjoyed the film, despite the negative reviews it has received.
This isn't a plant review FYI, check my posting history if you will, I saw the film, and enjoyed it. I would give it a chance. It's a fun light film, perfect to take your mind off the current state of economy and Swine Flu worries floating about.
A fun, fun film. Check it out!
