Jury Duty (2023)
Has more potential but flops as a reality show.
I feel like this show was just meant to be a work place comedy with quirky characters, yet they shoehorned the reality aspect in but done it poorly. It just seems more like a loosely scripted "comedy" and then cuts to that one of them doesn't know about this elaborate prank. I would've preferred if there was more emphasis on setting up these pranks, how they're toying with him and seeing the actors/behind the scene staff reactions to if they are gonna be caught in this so called prank. The only time they show content of this reality show is in the scripted scenes and it tries so hard to be funny, yet the reactions of reality star barely effects the show. He just feels like a byproduct in a show which is supposed to be around him.
Gay Sex, Apps & Me (2014)
What a pointless document
He basically made a documentary on how people get sex from strangers via dating apps and that wasn't for him. Riveting journalism. I thought this would've been a deeper dive into gay sex apps, but no, just spoke about how he was gay (which is allowed) and how he opposed to what other's do via dating apps (which is allowed. But not worthy of a documentary). Understandable the documentary is a short 15 minutes as this isn't really a topic that needs to be under the spotlight. How about make a documentary on trying to find people offline to go dating with in a world where people are closed off to that idea.
The Gray Man (2022)
Lacks story and logic
CIA hires rogue criminals straight out of prison, trains them up but it turns out the person hiring them is the biggest criminal of them all. The story is stitch together poorly as the logic or reasoning of the main characters just seem to complicate the storyline (they just don't do what they need to) which pushes the story in a certain direction. The female lead in this story just always comes out of nowhere to save the day but she is adamant to help the main character and giving no real reason just that she doesn't want to lose her job cos that's how corrupt agencies work.
This films loses substance real quick when it's constantly on the go yet he always comes out victorious. It's just over the top action. For a secret government agency doing very public and international shootings, they come across more as a terrorist association to take out one guy who has valuable information because that's gonna work in real life.
Man vs Bee (2022)
No common sense
The majority of reviews are riding from the nostalgia of Mr Bean, this is nothing like that. Mr. Bean was a character where plausibility went out the window and that was the gimmick as he did the unthinkable, whereas Man Vs Bee, a professional house sitter who recklessly chases after a bee the whole time and not paying attention to his surroundings, I wonder what is gonna happen. Didn't laugh once as it was so predictable, like putting the manual on the stove while doing the cooking and whoops accidentally set fire to that important item.
The episodes being short made it easy to binge but I had to stop myself as I was falling asleep. Just dull and generic.
How to Hire a Hitman (2022)
Overdramatic
The presenter constantly overdramatised the documentary to make it sound more intense than it actually it was. Most of the shots in this documentary is randomly of the presenter going for a jog or sitting at her laptop or in a car while she narrates what has just happened.
The documentary has an interesting premise about the dark web and being able to hire a hitman. But as mentioned before it falls off the rails when the presenter exaggerates all the emotions which just comes off disingenuous.
Ozark (2017)
Ending ruined it
The first 3 seasons were captivating and everyone's action had a consequence. But Season 4, especially the second part of it just goes out the window.
When the head of cartel gets killed in a very poorly written way and then there was no repercussion for it, just left a sour taste in my mouth. This was all in cahoot with the FBI as they helped get him transferred. But they decide to transport him in one escort van and not have any backup to prevent him getting free.
Then the ending itself were the PI tracked them down and clearly didn't do is his research very well to know how corrupt and dangerous they were but the whole black out and assuming he got shot by Jonah just grew this sour taste. We devoted our time and followed this show but the lacklustre ending truly disappointed a great.
Hacks (2021)
Dull
They hate each other, point out each other flaws and then become friends. So overrated and over the top for a simple storyline. Should be retitled to cack as that sums it up perfectly. 10 episodes yet they are each half an hour so you're basically watching 5 episodes and that was deserving of 3 Emmys!? An award for the shortest series would be more fitting.
The Bubble (2022)
So much potential
The crew features so much talent like Maria Bakalova (Borat 2), Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele) and Leslie Mann (Knocked Up) are a few. But their take on Covid and Hollywood just comes across corny as they're trying so hard to be funny by over complicating everything.
Usually films are quite smart when they integrate their sponsors in the film, this film takes it to another level with TikTok and the constant dance scenes. I can understand it's a film for the family but the whole Tik Tok narrative gets boring quick.
Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King (2022)
Greed meets greed
A guy who didn't want to pay the bank 2% commission fee and following bitcoin wanted to jump on the trend to get rich quick. Only to be scam by a cryptocurrency stock marketplace as the banning of crypto in foreign countries led to the plummeting to the value of bitcoin so the CEO then unexpectedly died and took the passwords with him.
The ending was a bit unfulfilling as the stories ends on the biggest question, is he alive or not. Also seems to be trying to clean the wife's reputation as they expect she was apart of the hustle. Nothing was really proven just internet theories from breadcrumbs.
The King's Man (2021)
Completely lacks Kingsman's charm
Without Taron Egerton and Colin Firth this film lacks the charisma and humour of the prior Kingsman films. This film went on too long and the main characters was saved way too many times. There was one good twist halfway through but besides that I was struggling to follow what was going on as I was yawning too much. This just feels like a typical Hollywood rushed movie just to merely make money. I would say avoid if you're a fan of the franchise.
The Invisible Man (2020)
Overrated and predictable
(SPOILERS) Why mention she couldn't get pregnant at the beginning which you know later when she gets tested at the hospital she is actually pregnant all along. Also, the brother being the one behind the suit at the time when she guns him down was a twist I saw coming a mile off. Now if the actual husband had anything to do it, we will never know and I kinda feel like that's a cheap ending. There was so much that was left unanswered and without logic like all the witnesses that was left behind. I guess they couldn't say who was behind the suit but surely that would've gained some BIG media attention or maybe an investigation but I guess that's just me being a realist in a fantasy story, so maybe I should just enjoy the story but when the twists are too predictable it just left it an unfulfilling watch. Don't get me wrong the acting and cinematography was good but the story really dragged it down for me.
Hello, Privilege. It's Me, Chelsea (2019)
If you're raised as an outcast, you're gonna think like one!
This is just white people blowing their own trumpet and just adding to the problem! Yes, there is racism but we can't keep referring back to history or blame it on "privileged white man". I think as a society we need to move on. Just the irony as they state white privilege, yet voting, going on marches and starring in documentaries isn't a privilege!?
True Story (2021)
The Predictable
After the main conflict occurred I had an overwhelming hunch what happened and why so I thought instead of watching the whole series just skip to the end and find out... BOOM! I was 100% right. Just the way the first episode is presented and how the characters are portrayed leading up to the main event was a massive giveaway. I only watched half of the first episode and the end of the last two episodes and even that was a waste of time.
Phil Wang: Philly Philly Wang Wang (2021)
Phil Wangless
Phil Wang's quirky comedy is definitely fun to watch when on panel shows as it makes him stand out, but this special was just generic (race, Covid-19, veganism). Bite size versions of Wang's comedy is easier to watch as you realise he is the gimmick (usually playing to the Asian and millennial stereotypes or wearing his silly yellow suit in TaskMaster). This was just a load of mismatch jokes woven together. His set doesn't feel polished enough for a Netflix special, maybe this is due to lockdown and not being able to perform that much, who knows. It just doesn't click as it becomes more monotonous throughout, waiting for a reason to not turn it off. His jokes definitely felt cheap as you don't feel fulfilled/entertained afterwards. Just questioning what you're watching... If you've seen him on panel shows or heard him in a podcast, decide for yourself but if you're going into this not knowing much about Phil Wang I would recommend staying away as this is a tough watch.
The Woman in the Window (2021)
Barely a thriller
Great cast with good acting but felt more like a theatre play and not having read the book but heard great things I assume the film would do it justice. Usually in thrillers there is a huge plot twist that you didn't see coming, yet she is a delusional woman who takes drugs to help with her phobia that causes hallucinations which explains why everything is the way it is in the first half so no real twists and this is said to you, the audience. This just becomes a dull affair as nothing really new happens, just the main character accusing people based on what she saw. So people not believing her and she starts to doubt herself, then she gives up. So where is the twist you ask, well all the stuff I mentioned before turns out she was right all along. Huge shocker and she gets attacked. After being hospitalised, an apology from the detective and some short time has passed her phobia is no longer a thing. She couldn't even leave her house before being viciously attacked but afterwards she is healed from all her trauma... Logic! She moves on with her life by moving out of her house.
Nomadland (2020)
Are people watching the same film, Nomadland!?
What is with all the high reviews!? This film lacks everything. The film just goes to each character and how they lost hope and/or how they are trying to find it. That's it... Nothing moving or engaging about this film. I only put it on due to all the acclaims and it just shows the film industry is fake and they just hand out awards to anyone. She is a good actress but I wouldn't give her any awards from this.
American Assassin (2017)
It's okay.
The start of the film was gripping but afterwards it just becomes a typical Hollywood action.
So the main character, Mitch (Dylan O'Brien) a grad student, takes a few MMA classes after a terrorist attack that killed his fiancé and wants to seek vengeance against the people who killed her so he tracks them down and tries to join them. The CIA thinks he is the holy grail for a secret assassin even though he is a loose cannon, so they send him off to some secret camp that is led by Stan (Michael Keaton). After his intense training does he make good operative? He is the most obvious spy out there. Just runs around guns blazing and does his own thing when told not to and just happens to end up in the right place at the right time. But get this, the main antagonist is a loose cannon who doesn't take orders and used to be part of the secret CIA group but has now gone rogue. So the CIA's logic is to get someone who doesn't take orders and train them up to go against the person who was trained by the CIA and didn't take their orders...
The action is lame, for example there is a part where he is in a car park (where he shouldn't be) and they're dogs after him so he hides in a car. He manages to lure them in the car and locks them in. That's it. Surely this holy grail of a CIA operative would of found a better way to get to his mission that didn't cause so much of a ruckus. But all of this noise and commotion wouldn't of have even compromised his mission, as he was on the ground floor outside in a car park and his mission is like the 30th floor of a building that he is next to so why did they make this so dramatic when he wasn't in any real danger!?
When they wanted to add emotion to the film they would just mention his dead fiancé and Mitch would go teary eyed or angry and that's that.
I do feel like there is a great storyline here but the way the director told it is utter shambles.
Uncut Gems (2019)
Difficult to watch!
It's just people shouting over each other and somehow this is Adam Sandler's best performance. You can't even hear what he is saying most of the time! Really not worth it and it just show the film industry is fake with all the acclaims to this film.
