Borderless (2019)

Generic and Confusing
7 January 2020
The documentary is pretty much terrible on a technical aspect. The whole film is shot in a 'cinematic' lens that felt forced and uncompelling. The acting/performance is pretty much atrocious, and by the performance, I mean the unnecessary dubs during the documentary. Which make it felt that the immigrant/non-immigrant who was being interviewed was saying something that is not worthy of any emotional punches.

This film is a perfect example of what a documentary should never try to accomplish, and that is pretending to be more than what it is without any weight. The immigration problem in Europe is way more complicated than this and yet the director thought that it was a good idea to dumb it down to a 1 hour and 30 minutes documentary. Everything felt insincere, as Lauren Southern explained everything to the audience like a bunch of dummies.

It was an insult to every single documentary out there. Rather than try to make an informative piece, it was a political piece. Visually, it's dull. And on every single level of being a documentary, It tells a story that only one group can like it, which is the right-wing group who will love this documentary, judging from the astonishing 10-star reviews.

Watchmen: See How They Fly (2019)
Season 1, Episode 9
8/10
Better than most episode
16 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
My biggest problem with this episode (along with the others episodes in the series), is the acting. While there are some memorable exceptions (eg. A Little Fear of Lighting and This Extraordinary Being), the actors 'acting' is bearable and is a far cry from great. I can only found a few exceptions where the acting is really terrific, but whenever Angela Abar, Dr Manhattan or Lady Trieu walks out, their dialogues screams of rewrites. Everything seems so out of touch and hilariously uncomfortable. Their lines are just so odd and out of touch with society that they don't add anything the story, the writers have to make these characters relatable by making this character talks like non-human? Sometimes it's pretty funny, but most of the time, it's just dull or really average.

Visually I liked some scenes, like the ending where the giant globe basically shattered everywhere. The scenes were composed nicely and felt very genuinely designed. However, when Dr Manhattan was being (destroyed?) Why does he look like a buffoon. Most scenes were fine and average and just like the other episodes, the cinematography could have been great if they actually try to make the dialogue comprehensible.

Storywise, this episode is my 3rd favourite. A LIttle of Fear of Lightning and This Extraordinary Being are my 1st and 2nd favourite respectively. The ending was stupid and annoying like why does Dr Manhattan narrate over the scenes? That was cringe and basically insulting and why does Dr Manhattan talk like he did in the comic book. All of these scenes were more than frustrating than interesting. The fact the show is trying to do something different is commendable and should be celebrated. but when the acting and dialogues are just insanely annoying it becomes frustrating. From an overall standpoint, this episode was great and unlike the episode before it, it actually tries to be an engaging story.

In conclusion, this episode is not the best but I would not call it terrible. I have fun watching it and it was comprehensive more than any other episodes which came before it. The ending is fine, but the way they executed most things were sometimes annoying.

Watchmen: This Extraordinary Being (2019)
Season 1, Episode 6

Fantastic like the previous episode
26 November 2019
I liked this episode, the production was great (as always) and the narrative begins to pick up significance paced like the previous episode. I liked it for what it is, an exploration of the past, 'nostalgic' in away. I read the comic and remember the Minutemen as just a distant past a long time ago in the overall narrative, now finally having the chance to experience this world of the period was certainly a good change of pace.

What is my problem with it then? Why isn't this an automatic 10/10? Birdman is better, you do not get to become Birdman at all. The show uses a similar style of camera style, whereby everything looks like it's done in one shot. I could just imagine Birdman as an influence all over it. Which is great by the way, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it a lot. But the fact that they have short cuts in the film just doesn't play well with me. The cinematography was perfect all the way through, however, the lightning could have been used a little bit better. Furthermore, it did not change my opinion on Angela Abar's character. Yeah, I get it, her dad did something against racism but that does not change the fact that she is an empty character with unrelatable motivations.

This episode was good nonetheless, I was never bored by it. Watch it if you have not.

Art in Films Done With Perfection
24 November 2019
This is a film that I would describe as an art-film, but rather being an art-film (like ones that are made for a niche audience), it presentations and narrative are so fantastic that I never found myself bored of the screen.

I never really liked the original Blade Runner, I think it is one of the most overrated pieces in cinema. Don't get me wrong, the cinematography and world-building was nothing but impressive for its era. However, the story is slow and the narrative just doesn't make any sense (eg. what was up with that unicorn scene? Why does every single performance seems like they just want to go home?). Regardless of how much I didn't like the first film, I could appreciate its influence and production design. Blade Runner 2049 improves every single thing about the original.

The plot was amazing. For once I was able to understand the character's motivation, what their goals are and so on. It explores many themes like perfectionism, life and death and every single of these themes are explored throughout the film like a sacred text. There were so many details and so many beautiful imageries that I could not imagine that these were made this movie by actual people. Everything in this film is perfect. I could see anything wrong with the film. Every single shot feels emotionally impacting and the last scene was me gripping me on my seat cheering for the main character. This is what an art film should try to accomplish. It is a film that tells life through art and art through life. It is not made for a niche audience, instead, it is made as a representation of the future possibility of the human race. These possibility seems so real in our world that I would imagine myself living in this fictional society. The CGI was perfect, the cinematography was bloody incredible. The story was amazing.

There were so many things done right for this film that I am comfortable calling it a 10/10. A minor issue that I had with it would be the dialogues, which sometimes feel drawn-out and pointless, but these were added with amazing visual, making you grip with the scene regardless of the nonsense.

I'm Still Here (I) (2010)

Great but not meaningful
24 November 2019
I enjoy this film for what it's trying to do. On one hand, it's great for the criticism that it is trying to convey. Poking holes and making a mockery of the entertainment industry and how the obsession of artist can become fear and anxiety for the artist's themselves. All of these themes play into the story very well and in no way was the narrative boring or wrong. However, it acts itself as a documentary which is one of its biggest problems.

A mockumentary is an attempt of making fun of something, fictional or real; its purpose is to entertain the audience. While a documentary attempt to inform or educate the audience. And from these two definitions, that's one of the biggest that I have with the film. It doesn't know what it wants to be or what it could be.

If you want to make a mockumentary, then there need to be more humour and more ridiculous jokes, and the film doesn't know what or when it should be funny. Its style of 'documentary' is just so unconnected and unreal that you need to question whether or not Joaquin Phoenix was acting at all. That is one of the biggest problems with the film. What do you take seriously and what should you think is just funny? I can't tell whether or not it meant to be funny or not.

A washed-up person ruining his own life and manipulating people's emotion so that he could make a point is fine because it's a choice to make. But when the audience already that you are clearly lying about what you are doing it just felt like a big joke and nothing more. I could see the message being productive and I could see its technicality being great. But when you failed at making a convincing film that the actor's experience is their genuine experience, what is there to think that it's a real film? Or a documentary? Nothing. You simply don't know whether or not the film is worthy of being great. If I know that his emotions are illusions, then I would see no genuine emotion. It lacks meaning because of it. There is simply no meaning behind this film, it doesn't change Joaquin Phoenix's life nor does it change the audience mind towards Hollywood. It is shallow when it comes to a meaningful story.

Overall the narrative is great, its technicality is great. The fact that the other actors stay true to their roles is great and enduring as well. Its biggest and determining factor lies in its meaning, which it falls short on every level.

Boring and manipulative.
21 November 2019
I have watched around 40 minutes Tom of Finland and I don't intent to finish it. Why? Because everything in the first 40 minutes is just terrible. If you can't create a cohesive and exciting film in the first 40 minutes then there's nothing about this film that is even normal. I understand that I should've watched the rest of the other film, but what is there to like about when the first Act is so incredibly boring. The reason I rated 2 stars, instead of a 1-star is that the beginning was pretty decent. Otherwise, this film was a waste of my time and can't stand even to even think about it.

This film is trying to represent the LGBTQ community in a way that is so boring and uninteresting that I found myself not relating to the main character. If you want to make your film inclusive, at least have a good story to go about and present it in a unique and interesting. Not even the theme of 'isolation' was even remotely interesting. It was terrible a movie experience to me personally.

The performance was terrible, the cinematography was just par average and the story isn't even that great. It's not good. Don't watch it.

An empty film with a theme, nothing more.
20 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
When looking at film, I usually try to make it a little bit about everything, storytelling, technicality, performance, music etc. What makes every film special the most is their story. Films with a great story can usually make me enjoy it more than the technical aspects. So, when I watched 'A Serbian Film', I could not understand anything about it. I'm not intending to watch it a second, since, let's be honest here, its realistic graphics and vile in every way.

Honestly, I don't mind the violent nature of it all. I actually 'enjoy' certain movies that use special graphic scenes to their advance the plot or a narrative or a theme. Take for example like 'Salo', a film I enjoy that I rated it 7/10. It was a film good on the technical aspects and everything among the like. It was clear about its message anti-authoritarianism, and the film goes out to explicitly tell you this. And I like the fact that it acknowledges its violent tendency and so forth. With 'A Serbian Film', I could not say the same thing. I don't enjoy it but I can see why there are qualities to like about it. It has a theme that explores the human emotion like sex, killing and obsession of art. These themes are explored throughout the film very explicitly up to the point where it becomes absolutely insane to the eyes, which is unabashedly honest and truthful. What makes it terrible however is its story.

I don't get it, I don't like it. It does not add anything onto the film. When I look up what the director's vision was, all he can say that he just 'want to say something', but this so-called 'something' is explored in such a way that it becomes more like a futile thing rather than an actual experience. If this film was able to make itself more about characters rather than the themes than this film would be rated higher. In Salo, you don't need to care about characters, it was all about themes. But with this, you can only see the themes and sex and everything, without a proper reason for its existence (perhaps with the main character but even then, his emotions are completely worthless because he was drugged). Also, the fact that Salo did it 40 years ago makes it impressive that it tries to move cinema in another direction, whereas 'A Serbian Film' just does it now because it just wants to.

In conclusion, watch this if you want to see some horrific imagery or getting a hypnotic visual that would leave you uncanny for the next 15 minutes. Otherwise, you shouldn't watch it. It might not be so great with friends though.

Ahead of our time
20 November 2019
This film is a masterpiece. No questions needed.

The cinematography? Perfection.

The action? Real and virtually impossible to distinguish from what's real and what's not.

The story? It's the best! It's the best! No questions ask. Can't you tell that Neil Breen is about revamp the human civilization (look at the poster, it shows!)? He is about to kill the 300,000,000 'bad guys' in order to preserve humanity and to that end, he has accomplished the biggest cinematic achievement of all times.

The music? It's meticulous, gratifying, life-changing.

It's a masterpiece!

A Better Direction
20 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was fantastic, I was invigorated through it all. Looking Glass was great and the characters were actually relatable. I was impressed!

Looking Glass went through a lot of stuff after the squid attack in 1985 (I think?). We get to see his experiences throughout the episode and it was great. Not only did it explores the character of Looking Glass even further, but it also revamps the whole narrative in a way that is compelling and vaguely intriguing. His life was built on a lie and seeing his paranoia dissolves into pure nothing was an exciting dramatisation of such complex emotions. The acting was great and the performances from everyone else was also great. Everything in this episode explains something in the story, unlike the first episode, which explains basically nothing to the audience. Though there are still questions to be answered from this episode, it explains why Looking Glass personality and why he does the things he does. We get to see more of what happened after the squid attack, which was something that I wanted to see since the show's announcement.

Overall, this episode is exciting and level-headed in every way. I liked it and I don't see much wrong with it. It doesn't pretend to have meaning, instead, it shows meaning through the lens of the character, which is undoubtedly ironic, because so far, there has been a lack of meaning to the series. I guess diving more into it would explain everything but who the hell got time for that?
