Wish Upon (2017)
10/10
A modern comedic masterpiece
27 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
If one were to completely toss aside the idea of this being a horror film - instead viewing it through the lense of a comedy - Wish Upon suddenly unveils itself as one of the most unintentionally hilarious movies in recent times.

There are just so many ridiculously comedic aspects of this movie that borders on parody:

  • The dad with a trash addiction who insists on picking rubbish right next to his daughters school (who, when he gets wished to be "cool", just starts playing saxophone)
  • The stupidest phrasing of 'Monkeys Paw'-esque wishes I've ever heard ("I wish she would - like - rot", "I wish he was obsessed with me", etc)
  • So so many questionable decisions, plot holes, ridiculous deaths
  • Hilariously out of touch dialogue ("Dude, you dig on multiverses?!")
  • The most vapid, selfish and unlikeable protagonist ever.

All in all, if you were to view wish upon as a straightforward mid-budget horror film, you'll be disappointed. But, if you get a few friends together, have a few drinks or tokes and watch this as a comedy, you'll be in for some serious entertainment.

Lock up India and others involved
21 February 2023
This documentary was illuminating and shocking in demonstrating the ways people can be manipulated psychologically. But, regardless of the indoctrination performed on the members of this cult, all the higher ranking members of this group and the DOS group are culpable for their actions. Each and every one states that they did this "for personal betterment" while ANY human with an iota of rationality would understand that the actions taking place would not deliver this. What they truly wanted was VALIDATION from their superiors, something the multitude of wealthy, privileged people that were involved may have been lacking from their personal lives/families. Whether personal betterment or external validation, the actions committed by those involved with recruiting and indoctrination - including India - were acts of selfishness, doing something you know is wrong to promote personal gain. Regardless of the "regret" and the help provided to law enforcement, India did not flip sides until well after the arrest of Keith. Saying it was due to recognising the brand was his initials is a shameful excuse - it is so clear what that marking was and represented. These were all people seeking power and validation, and it is sickening to think so many will go unpunished.

Lastly, the fact that Allison Mack only received a 3 year sentence is disgusting in the context of this documentary.

Why are other 1st level DOS members not also imprisoned? Because Allison was the master of India, who's wealthy royal family felt personal spite towards.

ALL THESE PEOPLE NEED TO BE LOCKED UP FOR AT LEAST 5-10 YEARS.

what

The type of film you need to watch twice - but only once you read an explanation online after the first watch. A masterclass in sci-fi and an awesome perspective on alternate realities/time travel.

It's pretty incredible the director went from making this to making 'Southland Tales' lol.

Extremely predictable ending
17 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It is clear the film has taken inspiration from recent films such as Knives Out, which of course draws inspiration from classic whodunnit films. This time the mystery is in the context of small town werewolf attacks and the newly appointed parks ranger trying to find the culprit.

The film introduces several possible suspects and obvious red herrings, to the point where it was abundantly clear the werewolf was the only person who DIDNT seem suspicious. I found the movie doing little to introduce genuine mystery and suspense in a captivating manner, and the film showed very little in terms of the actual monster. I found the acting to generally be good - the two leads were the best part - but the dialogue writing gave a TV-movie quality.

The most disappointing aspect was definitely the eventual appearance of the monster. I was hoping that after sitting through a disinteresting mystery that I'd solved almost instantly, it would have cool creature effects or transformation scenes (as has become typical with werewolf features). Unfortunately, perhaps due to budget constraints, the filmmakers opted for a very cheap look for the monster. I didn't notice any difference between the body of the human and the monster itself, the makeup was constantly shown at a distance and in darkness, and generally the werewolf was not intimidating in the slightest.

I appreciate the concept and aesthetic the filmmakers went for (particularly given the low budget), but if you're looking for an interesting mystery, or a scary creature feature, look elsewhere.

A cash grab, and the director knows it.
23 January 2022
This film could not exist without the original film/s as context. Any interpretation of this movie as something other than a speedy, vapid, nostalgia bait cash grab aiming to ride the wave of Keanu Reeves' reignited popularity is simply wrong.

I think the director herself makes it abundantly clear within the text of this movie that she believes it is wholly unnecessary. I believe the first conversation about her doing this movie would have gone "either you direct, or someone else will".

Stick to the original trilogy.

Cheap Knockoff
23 January 2022
The main actor and actress were clearly just bargain bin versions of Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz. The portrayal of the original Mask could only be performed by someone with the physical comedy chops of Carrey - the voice, impressions, physical comedy and most importantly facial movements.

The animation honestly could have been worse, but still was horrifying at times. In theory the plot could have worked well, but the limits of and over-reliance on CGI made it hard to connect to anything going on.

I gave an extra point for the creators wringing every last drop out of the dog actor they used for the movie. That thing does a million different tricks.

Hollywood just doesn't get it.

Missed everything that made the original movie so great. Everything.

If you're going to remake a movie and put such little effort into how's it constructed from plot to casting to writing and more; why would I choose to watch this one over the original?

Just watch the first two home alone movies... next.

JUST LOG OFF
18 September 2021
Let me start by saying I sat and watched EVERY minute of EVERY episode of this show. I'm not a fan of this family, and I think some of the business practices they have employed are disgusting; all previous opinions aside, it is clear these two girls are hurting, especially Dixie.

You can see the impact that moving to LA had on these girls - I wish there was footage from before the move, but you can see how fake everyone around them is (from their close "friends" to agents and employees). It's all a bunch of Yes-Men surrounding these girls - perhaps to try and counteract all the hate they receive, but more clearly to make $$$.

These girls are responsible for confronting the hate they receive due to their celebrity status while the managers, producers and most importantly their PARENTS sit behind the scenes essentially dealing with none of the backlash from controversies that arise.

If the parents of these girls REALLY cared about them, they would tell them to LOG OFF. They've clearly already got millions, more fame than anyone could ask for - why do they need to remain in the limelight??? They cry and moan about the abuse on social media all while continuing to use the platforms that provide them "social anxiety". I understand that it is their family business, but if I were a parent seeing my child struggle I would not sit by and watch just for a quick buck.

TLDR Moral of the story here is that Charli and Dixie are clearly spoiled and get more affected by LA culture every day. Charli seems incredibly fake, stuck up, judgemental, etc. And is clearly surrounded by people who are the same. The worst offenders are the parents, who allow their child to suffer mentally while neglecting the truthful advice their daughter needs.

The worst audio mixing I've ever heard in a film
20 July 2021
Read the other reviews about how doodoo the plot and every other aspect of this movie is. I just wanted to mention the version I watched had the dialogue turned down so low it was impossible to hear in some scenes, especially the ones with music.
