It's Personal with Amy Hoggart (2020)
In line with Sam B, but less political
While some minor parts of the first episode came across as a little cringy, it was all intentional. I really appreciated the humor, the insight into us as people, and the over all goal of Amy helping out some one who started the show just wanting to be liked more through humor and Amy seriously helping her. Maximum effort!!
Black Lightning: The Book of Occupation: Chapter Two: Maryam's Tasbih (2019)
Poorly Executed Episode
So many things wrong with this episode. Blackbirds irrational behavior against the people who are helping her. Was that guy supposed to be deaf, because he was reading lips through a mask. Telling a girl her powers kill her when she uses them, but then making her use them. With the exception of Jen and Gambi's characters, no one was acting like their characters normally would. I don't care if there is an occupation and they've been subjected to a month of brainwashing in the previous episode, this plot line is awful. The only time a character should change this much is through time travel. I hope they kill this arc quick and forget about battling foreign powers for a while. This show was not ready for that and the jump was huge and poorly explained. And PainKiller? really? We all know how that is going to end. The same way every brainwashing chip in the head plot ends.
Captain Black (2017)
Not worth the time
I watched this movie not even knowing the plot. I thought it started off OK. I didn't mind the bad acting at first and it had a little bit of a Waiting vibe. Then it went down hill. The party scene killed all my interest in the rest of the movie, and yet I sat and watched as it never redeemed itself. The pace actually stalled at points and some of the conversations seemed like inside jokes that most people will not get. I want to give it a 3, but there was some animation/blue screen work that steer me more towards a 1 because it was so bad. So if you are looking at this thinking it might be a hidden gem like The Subjects or something slightly amusing like The Specials, keep looking. This is not the film for you. It is just a bad film with a very homemade feel to it.
Aladdin (2019)
Rushed and unfinished feeling to it
Why would they play with the film speed and speed a few scenes up? Especially when they were singing in one part! It did nothing for the film except make it look like they record the scene with the music playing at the wrong speed. And a lot of the time the genie was not making eye contact with what he was supposed to be looking at. I wasn't going to see this movie because I heard some bad things, but then I saw Dumbo and that was a great movie. This had so-so singing, flat characters, a flat villain, and why bother getting Alan Tudyk as Iago when you are going to distort the voice that much? There was nothing in this movie that inspired child like wonder. Give the Sultan his toys back at least!
Wonder Park (2019)
Whoever made the trailers should be fired
I remember watching the trailer for this movie in the theaters many times and thinking this movie looked like a waste of time. It turns out it is a great kids movie. Good animation with a lots of imagination and a story that made me feel something. Worth watching with your kids.
Little (2019)
Poorly Advertised Movie
The trailers for this movie did not do it justice. There are better movies out there, but I was surprised by how much I liked this movie. I laughed a lot, despite the plot holes, but I pushed them aside and decided to just enjoy the movie with my family.
Family Guy: You Can't Handle the Booth (2019)
Worst Episode Ever...
I added the 3 dots to the title of this review because someone else already took the most appropriate title for this episode and I wanted to use it but make it a little different. What do they call those 3 dots anyway? Ellipsis? Why are () called parenthesis when they look more elliptical. Those should have been call Ellipsis. Right? But Ellipsis does mean falling short in ancient Greek and they do end a sentence that. Parenthesis literally means "putting in beside" in greek, but then went through something french (parenthèse) before coming back to parenthesis again. Why bother mentioning that in the dictionary? Does the French part matter? Like did parenthesis completely disappear for a while and the French brought it back? Interesting. I'll have to look that up. If you are looking for the answer, follow me on YouTube, Facebook , Insta, and Snap. Don't be disappointed when you find out all those pages are not actually me because we don't exist.
Yeah, the entire episode was like the above paragraph. They tried to go meta but failed. There was a lot of plugging of other cast projects. My son begged me to turn it off and he is normally a huge fan. I mean, we want from Bortis getting addicted to cigarettes (hysterical!) to this episode. There is only one way to make up for this and that is a Stewie and Brian on the road episode.
And I'm not looking up the French thing. That was a joke. A very bad one. That was the point. If you've made it to this line in my review, you might make it through this episode. I eventually did finish it. I think I laughed once or twice. Go give it a try.
Ibiza (2018)
Nikki in Sleeping in a Bathtub.
Typical Nikki.
I laughed pretty hard at that scene. It's a sophomoric road trip story produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. If you are looking for something deeper, go watch 3 Billboards. This movie is exactly what it is supposed to be.
A Wrinkle in Time (2018)
Wow, and not in a good way.
I sat quietly hoping that my son was at least enjoying it. When we left the theater and I asked him how he like the film, he replied "underwhelmed". I couldn't agree more. This over-hyped, poorly made film was all over the place and yet boring. Tommy Wiseau could have made a better version of this with random people picked off the streets. So much acting talent and they just wasted their time on this.
Suburbicon (2017)
So Much Better Than The Snowman!
When you go to see a George Clooney/Coen brothers film with Matt Damon in the lead, you should expect a quirky tale. This was quirky and darker than I expected. It was a little slow getting going, but no where near as bad as The Snowman. Maybe because that was the last movie that I feel that I feel that this movie deserves at least an 8. The plot starts off with what seems like bad decisions and luck moving it forward and from there life just starts to spiral out of control as each dark detail is revealed. Along the way there are those moments where you stop, tilt your head to the side, and chuckle or cringe depending on how sick the twist is. There is some really sick and twisted behavior too.
If you think Suburbicon is going to be some futuristic wonderland that looks like something from the past. It's not. It's just large 50's community where every thing is swell and very white. It just happen to be a coincidence that there is a crime when the Mayers move in and because they are black, people immediately start thinking they brought it with them. Overt racism plays a very prominent roll in the film whenever it comes back around to the Mayers. Some of the things you hear being said on the TVs in the background is just awful...unless you are racist. In the end when you look back and compare what you know about the Lodge family and the Mayers, it really makes you think. If it doesn't, well I hope you at least enjoy Matt Damon's speech at the end and the actual ending because I loved it. I'm off to Aruba!
The Snowman (2017)
Total Waste Of Time
Right in the beginning I remember thinking that one scene was going to be like something from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but then nothing happened. And nothing kept happening for a long, long time. I got pretty quickly that the main character is tragically flawed. Stop shoving it down my throat and get to a story. For a long time I felt like I was watching Ralph Mellish by Monty Python, but it wasn't funny.
It had elements that I usually really like in a film, like a story not told in chronological order, twins, and J.K. Simmons. But everything that this movie did was pure frustration. There was no focus and it drifted everywhere. The lead character kept overlooking the most obvious clues, but I guess that is what happens when your main character is overly flawed and not at all relatable in anyway. He wasn't a protagonist, antagonist, hero, or anti-hero. He was just there for most of the movie.
If you like Nordic scenery, then this is a great movie. Just wait for it to come out on HBO or Netflix. The main character's name is Harry Hole and that is exactly were it feels like this movie came from. The trailer was better than the movie.
In one scene a nipple was shown and that was my favorite part of the movie. Not because there was anything special about that scene, but because the 70ish year old guy behind me chucked like a little boy when he saw it and he was sitting next to his wife. I mas more entertained by the audience than the movie. Go see Victoria & Abdul instead. You'll thank me.
Victoria & Abdul (2017)
Even my 12 year old likes this movie
My son likes to read and recently it has been biographies but we were having problems finding which ones to read next. I decided to take him to Victoria and Abdul to see if a story about British Royalty would interest him. It did. He never was bored and loved the story. He chuckled quite often at the sharp English wit.
While mostly a light movie about an unlikely pair, there are some very emotional scenes and even a few twists that I did not see coming. I am going to take my wife to go see it this weekend. She loves Downton Abbey, so she should really like this. If you like somewhat authentic historical fiction with some great acting and a view from both the royal and below stairs side of life at the time, this is for you. It is a fascinating story.
The Circle (2017)
Almost a great techno-thriller, but just good.
With so much great acting in this movie, the really bad acting stands way out. Specifically, I'm talking about Ellar Coltrane as Mercer. His delivery of lines and timing was painful. He really pulled me out of the movie. Was his character only allowed to watch the not funny parts Napoleon Dynamite growing up? He reminded me of the imaginary boyfriend from Inside Out, not much to say and only one way to say it. There was nothing natural about his delivery. It all seemed forced to me. I'm not sure if the issue with Mercer was because of the actor or the director, but I'm surprised that they didn't pick up on it during early focus groups.
Compared to Mercer, the rest of the cast was amazing! The plot was OK. It went a little far at times, but still somewhat believable. Maybe the one Ty/Mae scene with the extended dialog between them was a little uneven, but nothing else really stood out as just OK. Even the intentionally annoying and confusing geeks came across great. Watson, Hanks, Headly, Paxton, and Gillan really made this movie work. I want to give it more than a 7 but I can't. The one character was just way too distracting.
