Young Adult (2011)
Interesting Story (may contain spoilers)
The story is the same as the trailer. A woman goes back home to try to win back her high school flame who is married and has a new baby.
Charlize Theron as Mavis Grey is stunningly pretty even when she is being ugly outside. Buddy (Patrick Wilson) is a typically "lifetime channel" male character. Oblivious to the obvious and a perfect foil for the woman to love or hate.
Mavis who doesn't care much for Mavis is an alcoholic who hates her hometown and hates her mother but is looking for love and hoping she can rekindle the high school romance. Matt Freehauf (Patton Oswald) is the geek she didn't remember from high school who was savagely beaten and crippled because he was gay, even though he was not. Freehauf (while a deeply flawed character) provides the only true sanity in the movie
Mavis gets deeper and deeper into trouble (given all the line that Buddy gives her) until she goes to far and Buddy suddenly wakes up.
Sanfra Freehauf (Collete Wolfe) is Matts sister who finally brings Mavis around by admiring Mavis' life in the big city.
I went to see the movie to watch Charize Theron she has a lot of courage playing such an awful character but despite her best efforts she is a delight to watch. The movie while interesting wasn't quite as delightful.
Apollo 18 (2011)
Blair Witch in space
*** This review contains lots of spoilers ***
Camera action right out of Blair witch. A boring story of three astronauts going on a secret mission that turns into a horror story with spiders. The spiders are more hinted at than actually shown. The camera problems were supposed to be '70s transmissions from space with lots of noise. Lots of noise that sounded like haunted house sounds. The noisy video actually ended up with several second of completely blank screen on more than one occasion. The spiders, who apparently morph into spiders from small rocks, managed to get under the skin (Alien like) of one of the astronauts. They find a Russian lunar lander and one dead Russian astronaut. They wonder out loud why there wasn't a second astronaut, but like most of the little mystery's in this movie they never tie that one up.
Perhaps there are those who like amateur (bad) camera work but it was used as a special effect in this movie to excess.
Skip this movie, go see Horrible Bosses again. Don't waste your money on this movie it will be available on DVD next week.
Hoodwinked! (2005)
Cleverly written kids story
In the manner of GO the movie, the story of Little Red Riding Hood) is told again and again by different characters ( A few more characters than the original story). Clearly a kids story it had enough laughs for most of the adults in the audience.
It was no toy story in terms of animation but it was pretty and not hard to look at.
The movie had a story which was very cleverly told. It's sad that so few pictures for adults don't.
Full of clichés (Pigs for Cops) and one liners that went by so fast I may have to find more kids to take.
It was a movie that I found myself not wanting to end.
Get Over It (2001)
Pretty good movie
The film isn't High art and has some 2nd grade humor, but it's got a lot of humor and not a bad love story. The end of the story is predictable from the start but thats not all bad. If you expect a teen movie to be bubble gum for the brain, this movie was a nice surprise. It was bubble gum for the brain but some of the best. I laughed out loud at the opening and really enjoyed the music that ran from the seventies to yesterday. A pretty good movie.
