Who is this for?
21 August 2022
This movie is too dark and disturbing for children, but too juvenile for adults so I don't know who the target audience is. Would have been better (and actually good) if they had settled one way or the other. Maybe if you have kids who are into horror and want to get scared? Or are hard up for a Tim Burton film? I don't get the appeal here though. Not laughably bad or cringey or anything though!

Like what Disney has done to Star Wars
18 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It's best to not think of this as having anything at all to do with the Harry Potter movies/books. Which is easy to do since it isn't even remotely similar. It's watchable owing to the performances of several great actors but my oh my the story and production are embarrassingly bad. I'm not sure why they felt they needed to have all the fights occur in a mirrorverse like Dr. Strange, which ruined the scenes, or whether they hoped we'd fill in the plot for them if they made it convoluted enough. It's exactly like every other regurgitated movie Hollywood puts out these days: no creative vision or even respect for the source material, ugly cgi, and high school level writing.

Inferior remake
14 July 2022
I'm honestly not sure if the recent movies are intended to be actual remakes of the originals, but It's actually impressive how much of Lost World they were able to reuse for this either way.

It's fun enough for a popcorn movie, but not anything special. No creative ideas or originality here, which I guess is good if it is a bonafide remake! In any case, the original is a lot more fun.

Unbelievably bad
24 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is so bad it feels like a joke. I really can't believe how this turned out. It feels like a low budget production with a script written from fan-fiction. The writing is just next level trash you'd expect from a poorly made video game adaptation. Everything seems completely amateur here, but what really ruins things for me is how they've ended things for one of the few good characters they have left; seriously that's how we're wrapping things up?? That's her conclusion? I can't believe all the wasted potential and years of world development this movie ruins. Also surprisingly bad CGI. Awful. Just awful.

The Book of Boba Fett (2021–2022)

Not worth watching
9 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Let me be straight with you: this is the most boring Star Wars story there is. I'm getting sleepy just thinking about it. The sand is the most exciting character until they bring Mando in to fix it. Boba Fett was better off dead for sure. I don't blame the actors, but the production is beyond dull. Read the synopsis if you want (still boring) but I'd only watch the episodes with Mando in them if I had it to do over again. Unless you need something to put you to sleep, in which case this is the perfect series for you.

So much wasted potential
9 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So far (up to part iv) the show has been "good". But considering that they have both stars of the prequels and the unlimited resources of Disney, this show should have been an easy home-run. How do you make a series with both Vader and Obiwan that doesn't induce a conniption fit from watching it? Obiwan is a fantastic character so it's a shame to see him treated so dismissively.

It really boggles the mind to think that after 5 movies and 2 series Disney is still botching things up this bad. I disagree with the sentiment towards Reva, I think she's a fine character (probably even shows the most emotion out of anyone) and the rest of the cast does just a great job. But once again the writing is just unimaginative and dull. The action scenes have some really cool moments, but not enough. Particularly unforgivable is the part iii duel between Obiwan and Vader. If you're going to include a new lightsaber duel between Obiwan Kenobi and Darth Vader before the Death Star then you dang well better do it right! I also really disagree with the brokenness of Obiwan. It was fine for an episode or two, but it shouldn't have gone on so long. The world is depressing enough without seeing your once cheerful heroes reduced to somber shells of who they once were.

This should have been so easy to get totally right. There's just no energy or soul to this show. It is good though! Definitely worth watching. Which is more than I can say about Boba Fett. No one should watch Boba Fett but an insomniac. I'm sleepy just thinking about it.

Inside Out (I) (2015)

Boring more than depressing
5 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There's a running joke about having to not think too deeply about the existential issues raised by Pixar movies (e.g. "where are all the people in Cars?", "Do my toys suffer when I grow up and stop playing with them?"), but that's especially applicable to this movie. I get that Pixar was trying to teach kids that feeling sad is okay, but if you really look at what's happening in this movie it's clear that this little girl is having a full mental collapse and entering full blown depression-with all her "core memories" being turned blue. Not feeling okay sometimes is okay, but this isn't exactly the message they were going for. Tye way Sadness is portrayed is that her being sad is somehow funny. Like "oh isn't it funny that this character embodies depression and has to be dragged around by her foot because she's too overwhelmed with sadness to function?" Also, what does it say about the parents when mom's driving emotion *is* sadness and dad's is anger? That's a scary suggestion that mom's depressed and dad has anger issues.

But honestly, all of that I could ignore because most of it will fly over kids' heads anyway. The real issue is that this movie is just boring. It has a great cast, but it's not funny and the plot just kind of bumbles along uninterestingly. Ironically, for a film about literal emotions with themes about developing emotional depth, this movie is pretty artificial: the animation is pretty to look at, but there really aren't any new ideas on display. The whole little people inside your head schtick is nothing new. It's just a forgettable movie. Not terrible or painful to watch, but nothing awesome either.

NPH better have gotten an award for this
10 January 2022
Everything about the show is well done for sure, but Neil Patrick Harris takes it to the next level. He's absolutely hilarious. Watching him seems like he's having the time of his life in the role. Lucy or whoever plays Esme is also fantastic. The whole cast does a great job, but these two are spectacular here.

Starts Strong; Bad 2nd Half
23 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The first half of the series is excellent! Really love what they had going on. Tom Hiddleston is obviously great, as well as the rest of the cast. It kept me super intrigued with the sense of mystery and wonder right up until they pulled back the curtain on this new mystery Loki. Nothing against the actress, I think she does a great job! But from that point on I was no longer hooked and just got more and more turned off by it. The mystery gradually lost all gravitas for me, and the big bad guy at the end was a huge disappointment (again nothing against the actor, just felt like a weak ending)

I hated that they trivialized the infinity stones (may have happened earlier in the show). We spent about 2 dozen fantastic blockbusters building these mcguffins up to be like the ultimate power in the universe, only to throw them out without a satisfying explanation. The Ancient One says in Endgame that these things sustain existence, but now-for whatever reason-this new realm renders them entirely ineffective. Obviously the MCU needs to move past the stones but doing it this way just broke continuity for me. If there aren't any hard rules to this universe then there aren't any real, lasting consequences either. It's like "oh here's a new big bad guy and oop he just killed Thor but it doesn't matter because they'll just write him back to life somehow." The series just seemed to shred everything the MCU has built up to this point, and suddenly since anything can happen because all the established rules are gone, nothing matters anymore.

I was not a fan of the incestuous romance angle. They're genetically twins so spin that however you want. But I could have let that go if the series had maintained the thrill of how it began.

Overall, it's probably a good idea to watch this to stay up to date on the MCU as a whole, but I was looking forward to it being over.

Wildly spun off but well-written
15 November 2021
Having watched the Arrowverse shows, I was pleasantly surprised that this show is actually well written! The story and characters undergo a lot of development over the course of the series which not only keeps things fresh and interesting, it deepens your sense of connection to each. It never feels like the writers have simply run out of ideas or lost creativity, or need to artificially create drama or storylines. Plot lines all feel like they flow as natural consequences of how each character would respond in a given situation.

There's a great balance between action and interpersonal dynamics in a way that both build on the other.

I worried after the first and second seasons that the characters had run their course and that the series would grow stale, but was happily surprised to the contrary. The writing allows for lasting consequences for the characters, rather than simply having things always turn out perfectly in the end or to be corrected someway after-the-fact. Because of the darker tone and these lasting stakes, the threats faced by these characters carry more weight than I ever felt watching the Marvel movies. I love the movies, and their light tone does allow for some hilarious levity, but this series feels deeper. Because characters do sometimes die or otherwise depart, the stakes feel more real. Not sure it requires quite as much gore as is displayed though; there are a few images that are pretty unsettling that I personally could have done without. However, the fundamental themes of the show are positive and able to stand on their own without having to rely on that type of sensationalistic tactic.

On a final note as many other reviewers have mentioned, I still don't understand why this show exists. It does feel all but completely detached from the rest of the MCU. But does stand on its own merits.

Solidly "good"
19 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The cast does a nice job, but the show just kind of middles on after a great first act. It was interesting to watch once for the mysterious aspects, but I wouldn't revisit it. For me, it comes down to poor writing. They take the infinity stones, which the MCU built up to be the very fundamental forces of the universe, and reduces them to inconsequential trickets, without providing a compelling explanation for why. It felt like a cheap attempt to raise the stakes of the current story to compensate for the inability to create something original. The production only slightly deviates from a single tone, and while it works on certain levels, I never felt connected to the characters or engaged with their situations. I believe the cast was held back by the writing and production, which had some fanciful effects and dazzling set pieces, but failed to capture the emotions/intensity of each moment. It's the old adage about "show me; don't tell me." Finally, while I appreciate both the actors, the whole romantic angle they were pushing was just gross and felt forced. They're genetic siblings/twins. I don't care if they were separated across different timelines, if a real person found out they were dating their long lost sister they didn't know existed, it would still be incest. Nasty. Tom Hiddleston does a great job, obviously. And the plot is interesting, and I enjoyed the development of the mystery, but I was hoping they'd close the story out with this one season.

Not another remake
5 June 2021
Raya and the Last Dragon is good, you might even think it's great! However you feel about it, at least Disney put out something that isn't a cheap knockoff of an old original, which makes it some of their best work in years.

On its own merits, the story and message is nice. The characters are likable enough, but could have done with more development over the course of the film.

It's a perfectly harmless film for kids without a musical number you'll end up hearing on repeat for years until you hate the whole movie like certain other Disney films.

Gemini Man (2019)

Will Smith is still the best
22 February 2021
Putting all the technical achievements aside for now, Will Smith gives another terrific performance here. After the bad reviews/rating, I expected terrible writing but it actually pleasantly surprised me! Not great, but not cringy either. Standard action movie writing. The cast all does a great job. I don't know why this isn't rated higher than it is.

Regarding the technical aspects, it's the most convincing deep fake I've seen for sure! Like if you went into it without knowing it was cgi, you might think it was Will's son that looks just like him. Oddly the most telling aspect was his voice. It just didn't match up perfectly and didn't have that young Will feel to it (like hearing old Will coming out of his mouth). Just a bit off. And the facial expressions were a bit stiff. But it was a technical marvel.

The best movie ever made
31 October 2020
To say this movie is overrated is just wrong. Not just in the sense of being incorrect. It's morally wrong to speak ill of this movie. This is more important than Picasso's work, or Da Vinci's or any other great artist. And to critique this film in any measure is perhaps the greatest display of a lack of self-awareness that a person is capable of. Who are we to question any aspect of the definitive masterpiece of all of human existence? Every technology breakthrough-from fire or the wheel, all the way to the computer or the internet-is merely a means to this end. If there were an asteroid aimed at annihilating all of human history, and we could only save one cultural artifact, it had dang well better be this movie. It represents the high point of human achievement. It is so mind bogglingly good that George Lucas should probably be etched in stone as his own version of Mt. Rushmore. His impact for good on the world through this movie is frankly incalculable. No human being will ever live on this planet without having been positively affected by it.

The Dragon Prince (2018– )
10/10
Potential to be as good as Avatar
5 October 2020
Avatar the Last Airbender is probably my favorite show of all time, and I generally consider it to be flawless and this a bar so high that it would be unfair to measure anything else against it. The Dragon Prince not only bears that high standard, it may honestly even surpass Avatar in the coming seasons if they play their cards right. It's that good. It's actually quite apt to compare the two in this case because they not only share a creator, but have very similar themes and structures.

It doesn't shy away from heavier topics, and has a really welcome dynamic of inclusion going on. The story is great and the characters have a lot of depth and charm. I was surprised in the first few episodes by just how nuanced they all are. Each character's motivations make sense and they're complex. I did find that the primary antagonist's motives became less compelling toward during the third season. But that's fine. There are a lot of good plot points that are all working well together and keep you interested to see how it all turns out. Overall, it's excellent and deserves a try.

The Legend of Korra (2012–2014)
9/10
Great despite its flaws. Don't expect it to be like the original
31 August 2020
Korra's story is very different from Aang's, and it has some major problems going on but overall it's a great story and any fan of the original should watch it. The flaws seem to have primarily emerged due to the creators not having a guarantee for successive seasons of the show. Each season is essentially its own self-contained story with little overarching plot from season to season. It's just not quite as compelling to watch as the original and if you go into with an attitude of comparing it to its predecessor, you'll likely be disappointed.

On its own merits, The Legend of Korra offers interesting plot lines, decent-to-great characters, and builds on the fantastic world of the original. Korra undergoes significant growth over the course of the series, having experienced great hardships. The tone of this series is more mature and it addresses serious issues masterfully. As did The Last Airbender, the show broadens your soul to appreciate some of the important personal growth we should all have. However, the fact that the show delves into such topics (while certainly beneficial to an adult), is a bit heavy for a child.

Is it as good as the original? Certainly not. But holding anything to such an impossible standard isn't fair, even if it is a sequel to it. I watched it with an attitude of comparing it to the original a few years ago and was disappointed, the second time through I had different expectations and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Wonder Woman (2017)
7/10
Strong Lead Character With Disappointing Ending
2 July 2020
The film has a lot of good things going for it, and is probably the best of the recent DC movies (not that the bar is high). Wonder Woman herself is excellent, and makes a strong argument in favor of including more female superheroes. Positive messages are here, but not epic feels in your heart. One good character is not enough. I'm sure other people liked Chris Pine's character more than I did though. He wasn't bad, just not particularly interesting. They seem to have relegated him to the traditionally female role (which itself needs to be fixed) of being 1 dimensional and without much depth or thought. Like his character exists entirely as a romantic interest and as eye candy; which is typically how film treats women. That aside, everything works well together until the finale. Which has the result of establishing a lot of forward momentum throughout the film only for that momentum to cause hard skidding against the ground when the end falls flat on its face.

The Quintessential Childhood Show
23 June 2020
To call Avatar an excellent show is an understatement. This is a rare show that teaches your heart about the highest virtues a person should strive for, and explores the depths of the human spirit. Many important themes of life are addressed, such as redemption and compassion for your enemies or finding peace with yourself. The main cast is comprised entirely of characters that could have easily been made into the main protagonist of their own story. All of them are compelling and add substantially to the series. There are a few episodes that focus on characters other than Aang, and rather than missing the main character's story, you seamlessly find interest in the character currently being developed. There are very few stories out there that develop such strong characters.

All of the components of animated storytelling come together here to create an artistic masterpiece. The creators clearly loved their creation and spared no effort to fully develop the details of the world. There are things so small that they easily could have been set aside but weren't. I honestly can't think of a single aspect of this series that I think could have been measurably improved. I'm sure it's possible to find something wrong with this series, but that level of scrutiny is nonsensical. This is just the ultimate show. Probably flawless. Do your kids a favor and show them this.

Zootopia (2016)
10/10
Favorite Disney Movie Ever
19 April 2020
The ideals represented in Zootopia are more relevant to the real world than any other Disney movie I've seen. There are the more obvious principles of social justice on full display here, such as the themes of diversity and tolerance for others-obviously embodied by the primary duo of the film being "natural" enemies: a fox and a rabbit. What sets Zootopia apart though is how well it treats the issues and how the themes apply not only to issues of racial bias, but to all forms of intolerance of any number of personal traits. The themes of inclusion extend to all groups or persons who might feel othered for any reason.

Zootopia also features strong themes of believing in yourself and in others. Of breaking out of the mould of what the world tells you are your limits or how high you should aim. Or even the value of having any notion of reaching after your aspirations at all, instead of settling for the familiar well-worn path of your parents and those around you. The idea of daring to tread the unpaved road.

From a cinematic perspective, the characters are great and the world is both beautiful and intriguing. Ample amount of humor too.

Frozen (I) (2013)

Mediocre at best
4 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This film is heralded as some sort of triumph of feminism or reawakening of classic Disney magic. It is neither of those things. There are very few positive messages at all, and quite a number of concerning issues that arise. None of these characters have any trait that is particularly worthy of emulation, and don't acquire adequate character development to attain such a trait. The younger sister (a shut in who probably has never seen a boy her own age before) decides over the course of one night that this rando that came to her sister's party is who she wants to marry-he is a prince after all! Then friend zones the blonde peasant until-surprise!-prince guy turns out not to love me! I better go find blonde bro because apparently he does! And so naturally only this burly man can save me from my sister's tantrum witch curse. Elsa is the awful role model that no little child should look up to. Take a minute to try to think of her positive traits. I'll wait... other than that she loves her sister enough to come save her (though not enough to have talked to her much in the last decade or so). Then there's their proportions. Just like barbie before them, if any human had proportions like these two they would need immediate medical care. No one is shaped like that. From their bug eyes that take up all their triangularly pointed faces, to their tiny waists. It's unnatural. If you want a positive role model, look to Mulan or Hermione or Emilia Earhart or Marie Curie. Cleopatra even! But not some deformed, emotionally unstable damsels in distress. This movie is awful.

Zooey is cute. But everything here is just awful
1 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I was forced to watch this when it first came out because my best friend liked it somehow. Almost couldn't forgive this. None of the characters are particularly likable or even stand out. It's just dull. And the movie is built around you feeling for this dude, but you can't empathize for him because he's a freaking loon. Zooey (whose character's name I had forgotten until I remembered the name of the movie) tells that guy (who cares what his name is) exactly what her expectations are and he just can't handle it. But the movie acts like we're supposed to side with that guy as if Summer keeps playing games with him-even though she repeatedly tells him exactly what she's looking for to make sure he doesn't get the wrong idea. And that is the plot. Which is less exciting than watching this guy break plates with a frown. Which is the highlight of this movie. And what's with the parentheses on (500)? Hipster garbage. I hate it so much. Zooey is always a cute person but I can't even like her in this. World, listen to me. Let's all agree not to include this movie in any time capsules or culture pods sent into space so that if some apocalypse does occur we can at least have the silver lining of knowing this movie ended with the rest of the world. 2 stars for Zooey. But don't see this movie whatever you do. Probably used in Guantanamo.

Spent the whole movie waiting for something to happen to movie the plot along. It was less fun to watch these people in a bunker than it would be to actually be stuck in such a bunker. Got so excited when she finally did escape and there were monsters outside. But then it ended.
