Possum (2018)
psychologically terrifying and very different
Spoiler Free review: if you are looking for an engaging movie that will have you uneasy with a hint if terrified this is for you. Went in to the movie expecting it to be bad, but its actually one of my favorite horror movies. The way it goes about addressing trauma and the subtle details you notice after the whole idea has played out is entertaining and at its' core nightmarish. One of my favorite parts is the length... the short hour and a half runtime wastes no time jumping from scene to scene. Check this out if you are into weird, yet good psychological horror. (And no its not god awful like Tusk)
Spoiler Review: The underlying trauma that Phillip has is slowly revieled throughout the movie. I love the way the uncle and main character seem to grow further apart even though they seem to start far apart in the beginning. I also enjoyed how philip (and audience maybe) thought that getting rid of the possum would solve a lot of his traumatization, and as the movie progresses past that he realizes it doesnt and the movie plunges into chaos. The resemblance between the puppets and phillip/uncle shows that comparison is almost inevitable. The story of the fox to create the purpose of the possum is when I really was engaged in the film. The movie is definitely weird but it does weird so well and left me with a uneasy pit in my stomach when I was finished.
Eli (2019)
Interesting twists and turns, with a goofy finale.
Spoiler Free: So if you're looking for a movie that will entertain you, this is worth checking out. It has its element of horror and mystery. It's no masterpiece but it sure is a thrill ride. The characters give fair decent performances, and the way the story is paced doesn't drag on. However there are points in the film where some twists don't make sense. Give this one a go if you're looking for an interesting take on your "paranormal activity" type of movie.
SPOILER TALK: So, as most other critics on the site can agree, the last ten or so minutes are beyond goofy. One critic said something along the lines of leaving the film at the scene where the doctors are performing the exorcism. The part of the film where the main character's eyes turn red made me chuckle. It's almost like a kid playing with action figures. The ending was meant to spectacular but it came off to me as more spontaneous. The boys acting is solid for the most part, and having him discover more as the film continues is one of the more interesting factors. Having him erupt like that and seem god-like was kind of out of place. I also forgot to mention the cheap, loud, and lazy jump scares. I think this movie had potential to be genuinely scary, but the jump scares took me out of the experience for the few scenes they happen in.
Coraline (2009)
Great Film
A really enjoyable movie. The story is compelling and the villain(s) are threatening. Some of my favorite aspects of this film are animation, acting, characters, character development, and mood building. This movie isn't anything too terrifying, but if your child, (or yourself) are frightened there are scenes and imagines that are quite scary for an animated film. Definitely worth a watch.
Rattlesnake (2019)
Good entertainment, not anything special.
So if you're browsing to see if this movie is worth the watch, I would say it's better than most Netflix Originals. That being said, it doesn't go out of its' comfort zone. Nothing that will wow you, or really stick with you. It's short and it's simple, and there are some interesting scenes and sequences. (Some horror movies on Netflix that are worth a watch are maybe Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The. VVitch and The Boy aswell.)
In the Tall Grass (2019)
Almost like it's being made up as it goes along!
Spoiler Free Review: The beginning of the movie had be fairly interested, however some of the twists and turns in the movie make little to no sense, or just aren't explained. Parts of the movie will have you scratching your head. The performance of the main antagonist is quite entertaining. However, the direction this film goes is almost like the maze it's based on.
SPOILER TALK: The part where a few characters are killed off, then brought back is down right lazy writing. Almost as if the writer needed something to happen in the first 30-60 minutes so they through that in. I enjoyed some of the shots here and there, and same goes with some moments, but to summarize this movie... It's end doesn't justify the time it wastes before it.
Joker (2019)
Refreshingly good film.
Joker is a good film that keeps you
interested the whole time. It's definitely worth a watch or two. There is a lot of thought put into the film, I especially enjoyed Phoenix's performance, and the cinematography. The effort and care put into this really shows and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.
Tusk (2014)
It's not bad, it's just weird.
Watching this movie was comparable to watching someone fall down the stairs. It makes you wince while it's happening, but for some reason you can't turn away. Do not watch this, unless you want to feel really uncomfortable and unsatisfied.
