Qiu deng ye yu (1974)
Wonderful classic ghost story, with wonderful, ghostly female lead
The vengeful female ghost Tsio'o is awesome, and probably my favourite ghost in film. Seeing her take revenge on those who wronged her is incredibly cathartic. She is also incredibly dynamic, switching from mournful, furious, mischiveous and gentle flawlessly, and she eerily glides across the screen in a glowing green light.
An underrated hidden gem of a film, and highly recommended for anyone with a fondness for ghost stories or revenge dramas.
Fant (1937)
Remarkably fresh for its age with charismatic lead
When "Fant" was released in Norway in 1937 it was an instant hit, and all these years later it's still surprisingly fresh. And the main reason for both is Alfred Maurstad in the lead role as the anti-hero gypsy Fændrik. The role made him the biggest actor in Norway and it's still easy to see why. I was struck by how charming, natural and at ease his performance was, and despite how horrible the character could be you can't help but still be drawn to him. Truly the best and most charismatic actor in Norwegian film
The southern norwegian landscape is tranquil and beautiful, even in black and white, and the other actors are solid, well worth a watch!
