Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Welcome to the Hellmouth (1997)
Welcome to the Hellmouth
I've been a fan of this show since I was a young teen. I literally had my dad record it for me off some channel on tv that had a marathon going. It took many, many vhs tapes, but I finally watched the whole show. This is probably my favorite show of all time. But I'm going to be honest with my reviews and not just see them through the eyes of a "fan girl". I would hope that I'm more objective than that. I'm probably not going to say much about the first season. It is the weakest, IMO. But that isn't because it isn't good, it's because they didn't even know if they would get a second season. I still think the first season stands up, but there are a lot of episodes that just don't. Well on to episode one.
Knowing what we later know about Darla, I'm still curious (and kind of always have been) why she decided to kill this dude at the school. She's got to have many "killin' places". It was only the school so that Buffy could see the body later, and for the first reveal of a vampire, but it's just a tiny plot point that has always bugged me.
The opening dream sequence was cool. It shows clips from the rest of the season and what's going to take place without really giving anything away.
I'm a little bummed that this was literally the only episode where Xander rides a skateboard. The only reason it's in here is so that he can see Buffy and hit the rails for a "funny" moment. I have to admit, it does make me smile, but I wish they'd have him skateboard just a few more times, maybe just one. Ok, now I'm nit-picking. Ok, so I'm going to nit-pick one more time though. It's always bugged me how Flutie taped Buffy's file back together. Was he intentionally trying to put it back together wrongly? Was that just a mistake? Bob is weird, but idk, this is just weirder.
Xander does come off a a bit creepy. His first words to Buffy are "can I have you?". I know it's supposed to be funny. He's awkward around girls, but it just feels so cringy and a little painful to watch. Although it's funny to note that Buffy acts very similarly in season 4 in that scene with Riley in the library. "I'm nice to meet."
Cordelia wasn't one of my favorite characters on this show. I liked her near the end of her run of this show, but I really liked her in Angel where she had a chance to really shine. Her character was one that had the most growth and development over both shows.
I love Giles. But I do not get why he didn't just tell Buffy that he was her new watcher. She's had one before, it's not like he'll be giving her some new revelation. I would like to know though, why Giles didn't know Xander was in the library? He IS the librarian. And he was UP in the stacks. Where Xander was looking for a book. He would have to know that he was there. And presumably Xander asked for the book he was looking for. Xander isn't a book guy (yes, he helps with research later in the show, but he was never great at it and this isn't then) I would seriously be shocked if he even knew how to use a card catalog. Ok, I'm being mean. Xander isn't dumb, but still, this bugs me. The library isn't that big.
Willow is a great character, but I really don't have much to say about her yet.
There is a lot of rule breaking in this episode. Well, ... but only technically. They didn't have all the rules in place yet. Like Buffy somehow knowing that this guy wouldn't rise. Later it's never really certain until they either rise or don't. She says "mostly they're just gonna kill you". Which also ends up not being true because otherwise she wouldn't need to patrol the cemetery every night. They seem to do this to everyone they bite.
Also I really don't buy in any world or universe that Buffy would own either of the dresses that she's looking at in the mirror. They are both extremes in different directions.
There is a big plot hole with this episode. Darla and the 80s vamp were sent to get food for the Master. Why would either one of these "loyal"
vamps even sample one of the humans? It just doesn't make sense.
Heroes: Chapter One 'Genesis' (2006)
First off, if you're going to practice flying, start from the ground
I'll start off by saying that I originally watched this right after it ended and the whole series was on some streaming site. (I want to say Netflix, but I can't be sure.) I forgot a good deal of it and only really remembered big things, although I forgot a lot of them too. I did really like this show at first, especially the first season. IMO it goes downhill from here. I'm also not going to put a synopsis in my review. I see a lot of people do that and I really can't understand why. I thought reviews were suppose to be about what you thought of something and not a play-by-play of what happened in the episode. I'm going to assume you watched it. That said, here is my opinion of the first episode and it's characters.
I don't usually like child actors because let's face it, usually they overact like hell, but the kid who play Micah is actually good and I like his character. I don't really care for Ali Larter's character though. She's like the incredible hulk, but way more irritating. She just bugs me.
I also surprisingly like Claire, but I think it was stupid to make a video using her powers. There are so many ways that could go wrong (and does later). "I have my reasons" is a lame explanation, especially if we don't ever hear what those reasons are. I know we do later, but I still think it's lame. I liked Claire saving the man from the fire though, that was a good moment for her. Her family is a bit boring though, except for her dad.
The Petrelli boys tend to annoy me for different reasons. Peter is super annoying even though he turned out to be right. He's still a very grating character. Nathan is just a dick. Their mother is an interesting character, if not a bit of a b***h.
Hiro is adorable. He's a fun character because he's such a dork about it all. He really embraces it and it's great. Ando is just a bit of a perv.
Mohinder is interesting, for now. Isaac is kind of annoying and his power is a bit lame. Painting the future, at least it's not as bad as season 4's ink power thing. I know that I shouldn't complain because it's at least different, but I still found it kind of lame.
Overall, a good introduction episode for the characters. I'll ignore the impossible eclipse stuff. Also, everyone being able to get anywhere in New York City in 10 minutes drives me crazy. There really isn't much more to say about this episode. It really was just kind of an introduction and not a lot really happens.
