The Village in the Woods (2019)
Folk Tale that Haunts
Although the movie does have some moments that might point to horror this in my opinion is a superbly executed, 'thinking persons' folk tale. It has an atmosphere that is very subtle but effective. From strong understated performances delivered by Bradley and Hope to effective edits from McCormack. The music by McCormack also is restrained until it's needed. Something that is not common in many of the indie movies I've watched. I would have enjoyed seeing more backstory to the young couple and maybe even to the ill-fated villagers. Looking beyond the cinematographers overuse of fog and the omission of seeing a wide reveal of the village (possibly intentional) it has some stunning visuals. It's muted, desaturated look reminiscent of 70's movies. There is one image in particular which has an amazing backlit almost film noir mood (ticks many boxes for me). Another hat tip to the sound design which has wind blowing through creaks spinning around the 5.1 at home.
Servant (2019)
Strong TV Horror Suspense
I thought I'd take the risk to watch the new one on Apple TV in full knowledge that I'd probably be ending up paying good a months subscription. Well let me say, it's money well spent. If you're a fan of the directors work then you will really like this. If you aren't, you should watch it anyways... you will be afterwards.
A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014)
Could be Special
Sadly this one didn't hit the mark all the way through. It does have some very strong points to it at times though. I was hoping it would turn into more of a darker thriller but it didn't.
Liam was as usual and good. The play off between him and his sidekick was good.
Suspiria (2018)
A Separate Remake
In a world of remakes we must always approach withe caution. That out of the way, this film is a piece of art that from looking at the other star rating/reviews has clearly polarised people. This should be taken lightly though as it's best top judge for yourself. Yes, it;s a litle slow. No, it's not a like for like remake. But, it does hold a certain charm of it own and I implore you to visit it if you've gotten close to it and stick with it. At least then you'll be a better judge than I.
Doctor Sleep (2019)
Too Many Things Going On
With no actual clear 'hero' goal and absoultely too much 'power' bestowed upon the young prodigy this film for what is two and a half hours is too confusing. There is also a sense that a superhero movie has been wedged in there with peeople running around using their 'shining' as a source to harm. Dissapointing and lacks any tension as felt in The Shining.
Hyena (2014)
Dark Cop Drama
Totally enjoyed this movie. It does have some plot holes that are bridged with some leaps. That said, it's an enaging, visual piece. It doesn't follow all the tropes, just some and that is a solid choice. Stephen Graham as ususal delivers in an understated, powerful way.
Wounds (2019)
Misunderstood
Often it seems in a time of the 'millennial' films like Wounds are being slated. The film itself does have plot holes but none different to say that of Cronenberg's movies.
This is a strong film with a very eerie tension that permeates its veneer.
It's let down in my opinion is some of the used music beds to create tension with its visuals.
Is they were stronger than perhaps we'd have a different beat altogether.
That said, this is an enjoyable watch but one I probably won't return to.
Mid90s (2018)
Perfect Tone
This movie has the right balance of drama and lightness. Lots of skateboarding. Not being one myself I thought it was still great. Dealing with so many life issues etc it's a string movie. Hat off to Jonah Hill.
Gone Girl (2014)
Enjoyable
Just re-watched this movie and found it to be on the second viewing even more enjoyable. Nope, to me, this movie isn't as good as Finchers other offerings. Yet, t does rise above so much more of the other more dull features of recent movies in this genre.
Possum (2018)
Lovely Little Dark One
Great tone. Great atmosphere. Just something works with this that maybe shouldn't. It's not for all but I liked the weridness of it.
The Debt Collector (2018)
Enjoyable Fun Watch
Never watched an Adkins movie before and I have to say I found this enjoyable. Yes there were the occasional weak moments but Adkins is clearly a Statham in the making. That edge of humor reminds me of Arnie too. Yes it's not some form of thespian acting but the actual character Adkins creates is a fun watch. Amazingly proficent in martial arts too. One to watch for sure.
Mandy (2018)
A Classic... A Gem!
This movie is an incerdible ebbing beauty. There is something that this film caotures probably assisted by the amazing score by Johannson that is stunning. Ignore the low score reviews from those who'd rather be sponn fed vanilla dross this is exceptional!
Midsommar (2019)
Powerful and Hypnotic
This movie creeps in. When the fear elements kick in they hit. Solid movie from Aster.
