The Golden Gate Murders (1979)
I love this movie!
I truly love this movie! I remember clearly watching it on TV in 1979 when it came out.....I was completely absorbed in it and it seemed completely believable! It is really a love story of two kind people who find joy in each other's company, even though they are an improbable pair, a nun and a gruff "cop." David Janssen and Susannah York are very real, and their story is almost a fairy tale in its simplicity. Its charm is in the dialogue. I can watch this movie repeatedly. It led me to research David Janssen. I was sorry to read that he died in 1980. The cat named "Dirty Harry" probably related to David's friendship with Clint Eastwood. Highly recommended movie for romantics.
The Verdict (1982)
What a wonderful movie!
I just watched this movie on Encore, confusing it with my memory of Absence of Malice. It turned out I had never seen it. I just want to say that I was completely drawn into this movie, could not move, and felt that it was beautifully written, with almost lyrical words out of a pained Paul Newman near the end. I have always loved Paul Newman, and I think this movie should have been very highly rated. The screenplay by Mamet also needs to be applauded in addition to Paul's understated and brilliant acting. I also enjoyed very much the actor who played the judge.........I remember him from Romeo and Juliet (the Friar) and his clear adherence to the law and his eloquent overruling of Paul Newman's witness was beautifully delivered. The witness herself did an excellent job. This movie was rich in layers of acting, and totally believable. The scene with one of the Catholic bishops speaking with others over tea near the end of the film was also very well presented. If you like quiet, rich movies, with very realistic performances, and also a sense of subtle spirituality, you should like this excellent movie.
For Love of the Game (1999)
What a wonderful movie!
I just saw this movie for the second time this weekend on cable TV..............it's the best baseball movie of all of them! and it's what baseball is, a special life...... This is the best role I've ever seen Kevin Costner play! He was gorgeous, human, humane, deep, incredible! And Kelly Preston was perfect in her role. I also felt satisfied with this movie, enough to want to watch it again and to tape it for a friend who loves baseball! It was much, much better than The Natural. The music was perfect, and the shots of the players very, very realistic! And a very real love story! Excellent movie, egabbehe, a longtime Dogers fan.........and Padres!
Interlude (1968)
Interlude (1968) with Oskar Werner and Barbara Ferris
I loved this movie. I saw it once on TV in 1972, and never forgot it. It is a very moving love story, with the exceptional acting of Oskar Werner. It is my favorite movie of his, and he is my favorite actor. He was totally believable as an attractive orchestra conductor, married, in love with a young English girl. The story, the acting, the photography, and the music are wonderful. This movie has not been released officially on video or DVD. I would love to own a DVD of it. I recommend this movie highly. Oskar Werner seems to be playing himself! We are used to seeing Oskar Werner in character parts in American movies. I would love to collect his German movies, but cannot find them. I am a student of German and particularly enjoy hearing Oskar reading German poetry on records, now available on CD's. I am enjoying in particular hearing an interview he gave just before his death (heart attack) in 1984. Oskar Werner was mainly known as a stage actor, and each of his movies is a gem. I have read that his efforts to have his own theater in Salzburg did not work out due to his problems. He was both melancholy and exuberant. As a student of German, and a lover of Vienna, Oskar's home town, I am enthralled with all of his work. This simple movie "Interlude" is my absolute favorite of all of his movies, and highly recommend it. It will show a sexy side to this man which we never see in his other movies, in a very moving love scene. Cheers to Oskar Werner! I miss you, Oskar!
