Bridge to Terabithia (2007)
Touching film that made this non-crier actually cry!
I read Bridge to Terabithia when I was in elementary school, so I honestly did not remember much about the plot or tragedy that occurs. However, working in a library and seeing the book almost daily on the shelf, as well as watching the trailer, got me interested in the story once again. I just watched it on TV a few days ago, and I have to say that I truly enjoyed it, more than I ever thought I would. Yes, knowing that a death was coming at one point may have aided in my positive view of the film. But when it actually happened, it was totally unexpected and really hit me hard. I rarely ever cry at movies, (maybe 2 at most ever), but this film actually made me cry. *Spoiler* Just when it seems like their bond is stronger than ever, (and where I thought Jess seemed to be falling for Leslie), tragedy strikes, which makes the impact that much deeper. I loved Josh Hutcherson and AnnaSophia Robb in this film as their friendship grows and they share this magical land together.
As you probably know by now, there is an unexpected tragedy that would probably be difficult for younger children to understand and deal with. I advise parents preview the film before showing younger children. But don't write it off just because of this. This film is based on the book by Katherine Paterson, so the tragedy is necessary in keeping with the elements of the book's plot. But I think it's a wonderful film for more mature children and it brings important values and messages to light in a very compelling way.
Ratatouille (2007)
Over-hyped and just not that funny
I just watched Ratatouille on DVD, and I am glad I didn't spend $10 to see it in theaters. I was really excited to see it after all the hype and great reviews I had heard and read. Last year, I was pleasantly surprised by Cars and was hoping to be just as pleased with this film. Unfortunately, my experience with Ratatouille was not as great. From the beginning, I felt that it wasn't going to be that entertaining, but I hoped it was just a slow start. Nope, the slow, boring, tedious pace continued. I found myself chuckling only maybe 3 times at most at scenes that weren't that unique. So many of the other Pixar films were truly hilarious in such creative ways. Also, I know that a film has made an impact on me if I can remember little quotes or parts that stood out, and are easily recognizable when someone randomly says them (such as Guido's "Pit stop?!" from Cars or Dory's "I shall call him Squishy, and he shall be mine, and he shall be my Squishy" from Finding Nemo). There is nothing of that sort from Ratatouille, other than "Anyone can cook"...lame lol. I was really expecting a lot more from this film, but it just didn't deliver like past Pixar films. It's probably one of my least favorite animated films ever. I just hope Pixar can rebound and produce more awesome films like they have in the past.
A Walk to Remember (2002)
A Must See! But NOT ON TV!!
This is my favorite movie of all-time! When it first came out, I saw it probably 3 times in the theaters. And once I got the DVD, I continued watching it over and over again, by myself and with my friends. We all are in love with Shane West and his character Landon Carter. He is the perfect guy and I'm still trying to find him! Anyway, my point is, I would definitely recommend AWTR to all girls of all ages. You will all fall in love with Landon, I guarantee it!! Also, anyone who loves romantic movies with heartwarming moments should absolutely see this movie. But PLEASE, if you plan on seeing it...DO NOT...I repeat...DO NOT watch it on network television. HBO, Cinemax, etc. are fine. But I just watched its network premiere on the WB, and I must admit I was very disappointed. Many parts were left out or cut short which took away from the important moments throughout the film. It was edited poorly as well, and those who only see it in this manner will not get the full effect of this amazing movie. If you're not going to buy AWTR, which I strongly recommend...hehe..., please rent it or watch it on HBO or a channel like that. This is a great film with a touching message and should be enjoyed by all!
Cheaper by the Dozen (2003)
I laughed out loud!
I don't know why so many people disliked this movie so strongly! Am I the only one who really enjoyed it?
When I first saw commercials for this movie, I thought it was gonna be more of a kid's movie, but still looked kinda good. Plus, Tom Welling is in it, so that got my attention right away, and I knew I had to see it.
So I just saw it with my friends, and we all loved it!! We laughed out loud numerous times!! All of the kids in the film were great!! And Tom Welling was amazing, as I had expected lol. Although, he is too old to be playing an 18-year-old (he's really 26).
But all in all, Cheaper By The Dozen is a great family film!! GO SEE IT!!! You won't regret it!!
The Cat in the Hat (2003)
Shocked by what they put in a KIDS movie
I saw this movie last night and I could not believe some of the things they put in it, when it is clearly supposed to be good for children to watch. When I first heard about The Cat in The Hat coming out, I was excited because I liked The Grinch, and I thought this would be good as well. Boy, was I soo wrong!!
*Some spoilers*
First of all, Mike Meyers probably wasn't the best choice as the Cat. All I kept noticing was how he used his past characters' voices for the Cat. For example, he becomes part of an infomercial, and he uses his Fat Bastard voice from Austin Powers. Throughout the movie I also could hear some Coffee Talk and Austin Powers himself thrown around in there. It was kind of annoying.
Then we get to the numerous parts that don't belong in a kid's movie. Some include: calling a garden hoe a "dirty ho", giving an acronym for a car that spells a profanity, screaming "SON OF A ..." before being bleeped by fake censors, an aerobic video that includes orgasmic-like sounds, a cameo by Paris Hilton, making fun of their babysitter and actually riding her as if they were on a rollercoaster...the list goes on and on.
I don't know what these people were thinking when they decided to put this stuff in the movie. Yea, it may be funny for adults, but this is a children's movie! If you wanted to get more adults to come see it, make it PG-13, then have a ball with all of these double entendres. But this movie is supposed to be based on Dr. Seuss' CHILDREN'S book!!
Don't take your children to see this movie, there are too many inappropriate things in it that they should not see at a young age.
Passions (1999)
GREATEST SHOW EVER!!!!
I started watching Passions in the middle of August 2003. I was flipping through the channels when i stumbled upon 3 attractive guys standing around shirtless. That caught my attention right there. My cousin then told us as much of the story as she could remember, and from that day on, I've been hooked. I'm so hooked that I tape the episodes everyday that I'm in school and can't watch it. So far, since August, I've only missed 1 episode. Yea, I guess you could call me slightly obssessed. I love the story lines, and although they do drag on sometimes, that's what keeps me tuning in each day, to see what's gonna happen next. They're always throwing us curveballs, making us think something happens when really something else did. Plus, the cast of men they have is GORGEOUS!!!! But my fave has to be Justin Hartley (Fox)!!!! I absolutely love him!!! I really hope him and Whitney get together soon, cuz it looks like she's starting to have feelings for him!!! :)
So don't bash this show. It's a soap opera, so it's gonna be corny, unrealistic and a bit slow. But what else do you expect? This is a great soap opera that I think many teenagers will enjoy because it's mostly about younger characters rather than old ones who've been acting for years and years. PASSIONS ROCKS!!!
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)
ONE OF MY NEW FAVORTIE MOVIES!!
I have been a huge fan of Matthew McConaughey ever since I saw him playing Dr. Steve Edison in "The Wedding Planner" with Jennifer Lopez in January 2001. So when I heard about this movie, I was sooo excited to see it. I was also lucky enough to see the sneak preview two weeks before the movie was released nationwide. And I have to say, this movie is not only adorable, it is romantic and soooo incredibly funny. I knew it would be somewhat funny, but I could not stop laughing throughout the entire 2 hours. Kate Hudson is superb as Andie Anderson, and Matthew McConaughey could not get any sexier. Seeing this movie made me love him even more than I did before. Kate and Matthew have great chemistry together. This is a great date flick, and an awesome one to see with a bunch of your girlfriends. This is a movie I could see a million times over!! If you love romantic comedies, or you are completely head over heels in love with Matthew McConaughey, as I am, go see HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS!!!
Mariah Carey's Homecoming Special (1999)
SOO COOL!!!
Well, this special was actually taped at my junior high school, Oldfield Middle School!! I actually was there at the concert. It was so cool to have Mariah come back to Greenlawn. It was so exciting when we all found out that she was going to perform in our gym!! I thought the concert was sooo cool... and I loved how they showed parts of our high school and junior high school!!!
Treasure Planet (2002)
Computer Graphic lovers and children will enjoy it..
When I first heard that I was going to see Treasure Planet with my 5-year-old cousin, I wasn't too excited. I am a sophomore in high school and it seemed like a movie for little kids. But I have to admit, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. The mix of computer graphics are great! I liked most of the characters and there were a few parts I actually laughed at. Even though I think children around the age of 8-10 will like Treasure Planet the most, older people might like it too. My dad had doubts about it, but he was even laughing at some parts. Although Disney tried to gear this movie towards children, kids of a younger age might not understand exactly what's going on. As I said before, I'm a high school sophomore, and I was even confused at some parts. To sum up, my 5-year-old cousin enjoyed it the most, even though she probably didn't understand everything that was going on. If you are a teen as I am, see it if you love computer graphics, or if you don't have anything else to do.
Get Over It (2001)
Great Teen Flick!
This is a great movie for teens! Kirsten Dunst and Ben Foster really have chemistry together. There are a lot of funny parts for anyone who is into comedy and there is romance for those hopeless romantics. It's a great cast and even Vitamin C is in the beginning and end of the movie. Sisqo is great in it too. It's a must see!
Down to You (2000)
Weirdest Plot in "Teen" Movie
Down to You had one of the weirdest plots ever. In my opinion, it really didn't have a plot. It seemed like Freddie and Julia met in a bar one night and then all of a sudden they are seeing each other and sleeping with each other everyday when they didn't really get to know each other. Freddie's friends had no importance in this movie whatsoever. Don't get me wrong, I really like Freddie Prinze Jr. and Julia Stiles and I think they are pretty good actors. I just dont think this script reflected their talent. None of this movie made sense and I didn't understand some of the things they were doing and the importance of them. Like when Freddie had to drink the two wines and pick out which one was love, I didn't understand what was going on until the scene was over. My friend and I were really confused. I mean, I'm still in Junior High and I haven't experienced stuff like that before, but even my friend's sister, who is in college, said it was confusing and stupid. I really thought the director could have tied in the title of the movie better than they did. The movie had about 5 minutes left and I still didn't find out why the movie was called Down to You. And even when I did, it didn't make any sense. I mean yeah thats great, she painted a book cover of both of them with the book titled Down to You, but why? Why was it called Down to You? Nothing happened that would help you understand why this movie was called Down to You. In total, I feel this movie wasn't the best and made no sense at all. If you like Freddie Prinze Jr. and want to see him in a teen romance movie, see She's All That with Rachel Lee Cook. That movie is a lot better than this one and makes a lot more sense.
