Klan (2020– )
As good as a "crime comedy" can be
26 December 2020
From a show that is a "crime comedy", you can't expect that much quality wise. Having to portray crime which is gritty and brutal on one hand and make it be funny on the other hand, one of the two has to lack, here the crime aspect is lacking in favor of comedy. Of course, maybe you'd think "The Sopranos", but that is a one in a million show. The plot here exists and is ongoing, we get characters who have realistic perks and flaws and watch them trying to function in these situations. But the show itself is incredibly unrealistic (a dozen guys dressed like hooligans just casually waltzing into a high-end luxury hotel and mauling a guy to death with no security or cameras in front of other people, a guy who is apparently a crime boss being stupid enough to go to the hotel garage to see a car invited by a guy he doesn't know, another big-time gangster offering two nobodies he just met a opportunity to carry out a hit for him). It's entertaining but mediocre quality-wise, and the humor is not good enough to make you laugh but it's passable.

Easy to lose track
8 December 2020
A gem for fans of surrealism. Kusturica's signatures all throughout the movie are obvious, but in this case somebody should have controlled him to cut a little bit shorter on symbolism and metaphors. Having to keep track on all of them is hard in this case and makes you lose idea what happens halfway through the movie. After a hour and a half I didn't know what was going on and went for my phone. But it was entertaining in a way that I never knew what would happen next. Even if I didn't know what the plot was anymore, it was interesting to find out. The feeling I have for this movie is hard to explain, but I'd put it like this: it would be a great movie if I woke up at 3am dead tired out of my life but couldn't sleep, and this was on cable. I even think that in that situation it would make much more sense then now.

Watch it in two parts for maximum pleasure
16 July 2020
I first tried to watch this movie when it came out, it was 30 mins when I first looked at the time, thinking that at least half of the movie was through, and when I realized I'm only 30 minutes in, I stopped watching because I was bored until then. Yesterday, I've decided to watch it in 2 parts. Day one, 1hr 30min and the next day 1hr 20min. Then, it was much more pleasing and watchable. I recommend you to do so too.

A pleasant surprise
24 May 2020
I've heard of this movie a long time ago, but just watched it for the first time. Seing it's a 7.9/10 (at the time I'm writing this) gangster movie with Al Pacino, I expected a solid gangster flick, but not to be thrilled. My expectations were exceeded and I got more than I bargained for. The IMDb description for the movie is pretty spot-on so I think there's no need for me to retell the story, I just want to say that if you liked Heat (1995) and Scarface (1983) you'll like this, it feels like it had the elements of both those movies. The ending is especially thrilling, I'm not someone who gets all jumpy during a movie but here I did.

Trash perfection
24 May 2020
This movie falls into the so bad it's good category. It's a trash masterpiece. Feels like the director just went out with the actors and made up the story as it was being filmed. Everything feels so natural and real, and the mentality of people in rural Serbia is on point, though it's been brought to extremes for comedic value. It's a cult trash movie in Serbia, for those who know Serbian cinematography.

Awful movie made for political reasons
16 May 2020
I cannot believe why this movie has 7.1/10 at the point I'm rating it. It's entirely a political movie that bends logic just to have a point. And I don't mind a movie having a political message if it's well tucked into the movie's plot, but this movie is made entirely to have a cheap plot point - my ideology good and sane yours is bad. Nothing in the movie makes sense, eg. teacher taking their phones away and locking them in a school. What? The dialogues are some of the most unnatural I've ever seen, it's not even cheesy, it's just poor.

Hasn't aged well
11 May 2020
You should watch this movie only and ONLY if gangster movies are your favorite. And even at that, you should watch it taking into account the movie's age and that it was low budget at the time. What can you expect from a low budget 1973 movie? It's a B movie gangster flick, no more no less. The thing about the movie is that it doesn't have a plot, if you asked me to describe what's happening in it I wouldn't know. The only thing I can tell you is some lowlife criminals get drunk, go around the bars in New York and "bust each other's balls", in the slang of mob movies. Obviously, the movie was a big influence at it's time of release, especially taking into account it's Scorcese's early works - but it simply didn't age positively.

Donnie Brasco (1997)
8/10
Starts vague, ends up being good.
10 May 2020
At first I couldn't wrap my head around why this movie has a rating over 7 - it seemed as it was made by someone who wanted to make a mobster movie but hasn't ever watched one - just had someone vaguely tell him what's the point of them and the style they're presented in. At first I was of course how clean Johnny Depp looked - he sure didn't have a gangster vibe onto him. Apart from the small things - which there are many, it was laughable how poorly the whole getting Donnie into the mob thing was executed. A made guy hears about some guy with connections and instantly goes into business with him. After a few days he's all about putting his life on the line for him. It was just too rushed and it felt like anybody could simply join the mob by appearing at a cafe they reside in. When the Donnie - Lefty relationship thickened is when it got interesting. However, the movie goes quite a bit until that part comes. So I believe the last 30mins of the film are better than the 1hr30min before. The ending makes up for everything. All in all, worth a watch, especially if you're a fan of the mobster genre.

The Irishman (2019)
10/10
Misunderstood
3 May 2020
The Irishman is a title that you should bother watching only if you're a die-hard fan of mobster movies, for which it was made. The movie isn't about tense scenes, action or even story at that point. It's about enjoying the atmosphere that it creates, the same atmosphere you would feel watching Goodfellas or the Godfather. It's about the small talk, the way they behave, the "gangster" vibes the entire movie has. You shouldn't even bother trying to listen to every bit a dialogue - I was out of the loop for quite the bit of the movie's length and I still enjoyed it. It's like when someone comes to a nice expensive cafe and complains about the prices - it's not the drink you pay for that's expensive, it's the pleasure of the atmosphere you're in at the time, drinking coffee in your room and on a patio with a nice view isn't the same thing. And that's what this movie is all about. The atmosphere. So don't come in expecting it to be realistic to what actually happened, don't expect memorable scenes or Casino 2. Expect to get a good vibe, which surely will happen.
