Le divorce (2003)
gag me with a baguette
What if a sociopath tried really really hard to make a woody allen movie but devoid of wit, and at the same time tried to also make a wes anderson movie but devoid of whimsy? And what if it was set in paris, and the only people who aren't white and don't have too much money work in the service industry, and it starred two insanely beautiful blonde women one of whom is getting a divorce or something? Did i mention it's in paris? Like, paris is basically a character in the movie, but that's unfortunate since every character in this movie who doesn't work in a restaurant will be one of the first against the wall when the revolution comes. I'm going to have to watch tank girl like 17 times just to get the bad taste of this movie out of my mouth so i can enjoy naomi watts again. It might be worth a watch if you play it on mute while listening to a podcast or something, just to look at the amazing cinematography of paris filled with very attractive people who are pretending to do interesting things. But i am pretty sure there are other movies set in paris and filled with beauty that won't make you want to burn the world.
Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! (2015)
very very funny. which is the point
I was born the year scooby doo started. I watched the original version growing up, over and over and over, mostly because it was just on, but also because it was fun. I've seen every iteration since. This version takes everything that was good about the original, gets rid of the dated and meh stuff, adds jokes that are actually funny - like, you actually laugh at it because there are funny jokes, it doesn't just do joke-like things to make you feel as if you are seeing something that should be funny - and keeps the most iconic elements: every episode has a chase scene set to a fun pop song, and ends with them pulling the mask off of the culprit who then says "i would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for you (meddling kids, or insert joke here).
The character and art design is very different from the original. Good. It should be. It's been 50 years, folks. It's not weird that they look different. What's weird is that most versions still look slavishly like the one from 1969.
This has really good fun art, daphne actually has a personality, and it's funny. Daphne decides she wants to be a stand up comedian in one episode, and she keeps pulling out a notebook to write down jokes that aren't funny, and that's hilarious. And kate micucci is perfect as velma.
Did i mention it's funny? Like, there are jokes, and they are funny, and you laugh at them? And the music that plays while they chase each other through doorways and dumb waiters and down stairways on various wheeled things is actually really good fun music.
I am sad that this show didn't get a lot more episodes probably mostly because of idiots who were angry that the characters don't look exactly the same way they did when richard nixon was in office. That's just silly. And not in a funny way.
Aquaman: King of Atlantis (2021)
delightfully stupid
Utterly ridiculous. Incredibly fun. And despite how goofy this is, i think it is the most interesting take on Mera i've ever come across: completely unhinged and always itching for a fight (but not quite literally insane as she was in the comics for a while), and Gillian Jacobs is hilarious.
If you are bothered by the fact that this is not faithful to the comics or annoyed that it doesn't take the character seriously, you might want to check in on your emotional well being. Go for a walk. Maybe lay off Reddit for a while. Possibly even see a therapist. Being angry at a cartoon is not healthy. Grim and gritty Aquaman is still out there. But wait, can you be gritty underwater though, or does it just wash off?
