The Nanny (1993)
Great Show!
"The Nanny" was a great show. for anyone coming into the show in the middle of it and missed the first episode, don't worry, the theme song pretty much sums it up. The first episode starts with Fran working at a bridal shop. Her boyfriend not only breaks up with her, but also fires her! She has to find a new job, quickly. So, she starts selling cosmetics door-to-door. When she arrives at the Sheffield residence, she's mistaken for an applicant for the nanny position. She's hired, with reservations.
She quickly works her magic on the entire family, helping the children smile again and remember what happiness is like. She also helps the children individually. Gracie went to a therapist all the time, a little much for such a young child. Eventually, she hardly ends up going to one at all! She also helps bring Brighton back in line and go from prankster to focus more on his studies and a social life. One of the biggest transformations was on the oldest daughter, Maggie. Fran helped transform her from a quiet, shy teenager to a debutante.
Most importantly, she helps bring Mr. Sheffield out of his shell and help him learn to love again. The sexual tension between the two was apparent from the beginning, but he was always scared of commitment. It wasn't that he wanted to play the field, they both knew they loved each other, but he was afraid of losing another wife.
This is a GREAT sitcom and if you're lucky enough to catch it on reruns somewhere (here in the states you can watch it several times a day on the cable channel Lifetime), great!
Strange Frequency (2001)
this rocks!
this is a really good movie. like the taglines say, it's the twilight zone meets rock n roll. of course, my favourite is "room service." it features john taylor. too bad they identified him as "john taylor of duran duran," even though he quit the band over four years ago! anyway, this really showcases his acting talents to the general vh1-viewing public, since i'm sure 95% of the people watching it haven't seen "sugar town." i just hope he doesn't keep getting typecasted as playing a rock-n-roller in all his movies. he was previously in "a diva's christmas carol," but unlike that movie, and "sugar town," this movie shows his ability to act as a serious person, and also kind of lets us see what life might have been like for him in the mid/late 80's (the fame, the parties, the girls, the hotel rooms). a great movie!
Arena: An Absurd Notion (1985)
wow...
all right, so this "movie," if you can really call it that, is interesting. whether or not someone will like it all depends on why you want to see it. if you want to see duran duran in concert, back during their heyday, back when they were the fab five, you might consider trying to find "as the lights go down" instead. but, if you want to see an interesting subplot, and liked the movie "barbarella," this is the movie for you." as "arena" displays in the opening credits, this is a sort of continuation of "barbarella." it has been also known to be called "barbarella II." it features the same actor (milo o'shea) who played doctor duran duran in "barbarella," as well as clips from the first movie. basically, the movie is about the doctor, who has been awakened from his eternal sleep to hear people chanting "duran duran." he thinks they're calling him, but when he realizes they're chanting the rock band's name, he becomes infuriated and plans to destroy the band...
